In this video, you'll learn the nootropic benefits of 5-HTP. This is an update to the video on 5-HTP I did several years ago.
This updated video review on 5-HTP includes what it is, why it's used as a nootropic, recommended dosage and why I don't recommend using 5-HTP as a nootropic supplement, possible side effects and what 5-HTP is contraindicated with, clinical research, and where to buy 5-HTP.
Tryptophan is hydroxylated by tryptophan hydroxylase to 5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan), then decarboxylated to serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine or 5-HT).
Tryptophan → 5-HTP → serotonin
5-HTP as a nootropic supplement is a naturally occurring amino acid derived from seed pods of Griffonia simplicifolia, found in West and Central Africa. 5-HTP content in extracts of this plant vary from 2 - 20.83% (from seeds obtained in Ghana).
But using 5-HTP for treating depression and anxiety is not supported by science. The research is contrary to how 5-HTP is viewed by many, including medical doctors.
Using 5-HTP to treat depression has had very little success over the last few decades of clinical trials and biohacking.
Integrating 5-HTP into your nootropic stack is much more complicated than simply adding some 5-HTP in order to boost serotonin.
5-HTP alone will not work for depression, or any other issue you’re dealing with involving the catecholamines (dopamine, norepinephrine, epinephrine) because of 5-HTP’s tendency to deplete those neurotransmitters.
5-HTP will boost serotonin in your brain. But 5-HTP must be carefully stacked with precursors for dopamine and norepinephrine or you risk making the situation worse. Watch the video for a more detailed explanation.
Success using 5-HTP varies considerably but the one consistent theme is initial feelings of well-being, better sleep, less need for sleep, improved mood, less social anxiety, lower appetite, improved tolerance for stress and improved cognitive function.
Neurohackers who report consistent success supplementing with 5-HTP stack it with B-Vitamins, a dopamine precursor like L-Tyrosine, and only use 5-HTP as needed.

My sister advised me to start taking 5HTP and i thought she was referring to the song Aaron Marshall wrote .. He is in the band Intervals. Hilarious! And your video here is up to date and so detailed. Incredible that i get you in my first search! Thank you for taking the time. I'm going to work it into a plan for us - not ONLY take 5htp... Because I do not want to end up dopamine deficient. My issue is a secluding, overwhelming depression. Tried self medication with daily MJ usage and now I'm off that. No more smoking 3 times a day for me.

I’m using 100mg daily since about half a year now and so far my experience is very good. Of course I still have downs but not nearly as many and deep as bevor and I’m able to enjoy activities much more with less anxiety than before. I’ll continue to use it that way, but I will be more cautious about side effects and lower the dose if necessary.

100 mg 5-HTP is a low dose. It's when you use much higher doses that you get into trouble. Because it upsets the balance of serotonin and dopamine.

Hello Mr. Tomen, I really appreciate your fantastic work. I recently bought your book "Head first - 2nd edition" and it just amazes me. I have been diagnosed with adult ADD -- something I actually anticipated since I have started to read about AD(H)D. Before I tried out Dexamfetamine (which really did its job, even though I took just 5mg over 4 days), I did a neurotransmitter test. My results stated that my was and that my dopamine was on the edge of being below normal, however still in the lower normal range. The respective physicians recommended 5 HTP and SAMe (plus a B vitamin complex, Magnesium citrate / bisglycinate, Zincbisglycinate -- I am already taking all three). However, they never addressed the dopamine/serotonin balance. So long story short, which nootropics stack would you recommend in my case: low serotonin, relatively low dopamine, considering the ADD symptoms. Tryptophan is far safer to use long-term for increasing serotonin and melatonin.

What brand is best for 5htp, L-tyrosine, taurine? Also why doesn't the same unbalance happen when taking antidepressants like Zoloft because Zoloft only increases serotonin but doctors never say to take L-tyrosine and B vitamins with it why only for 5htp? Thanks

Zoloft does not "increase" serotonin. It only affects how the existing serotonin in your brain is used. And doctors are not trained in medical school to use or even understand supplements. Because those schools are financed and supported by the big pharmaceutical companies. So they are only taught about the drugs those companies make. Learning about 5-htp. One presenter on you tube indicated you should not take Tyrosine with 5-htp because the Tyrosine has the potential to cause issues with the thyroid. Instead it was recommended that mucuna be taken with 5-hpt instead. Can you please provide your opinion on that? Thank you!

Only partly correct. L-Tyrosine + Iodine + Selenium make thyroid hormones T4 & T3. You need Tyrosine to make thyroid hormone. Mucuna Pruriens provide L-DOPA which is a direct precursor to dopamine production. It does NOT support thyroid health.

It depends on what you are using it for. But I highly recommend using L-Tyrosine during the day if you intend to use 5-HTP long-term. Because 5-HTP alone will depress dopamine.

Thanks for the great info! I was deciding between 5-htp and Melatonin High Dosing and I am certain to buy the Melatonin for dosing up to 1000mg Dy. You just saved me a whole bunch of pain but I will still occasionally take 5htp to be sure that my Brain Serotonin is up to good levels. I beleive that would be the effective use for 5htp for me.

Joe, your brain naturally uses 0.5 - 0.8 mg during the night. The dose you suggest is toxic.

Were you planning on creating an updated video on Tryptophan? I’m researching the Kynurenine pathway and vitamin B6/P5P has been helping me significantly but I was curious if taking Tryptophan would enhance its effectiveness. Seems pretty safe to take. Thoughts?

Tryptophan is not on my list in the short-term to update. It may be later this year. Vitamin B6 is a cofactor in serotonin synthesis so you can try Tryptophan and see if it helps.
