5 Reasons the 2018 Sega Genesis Flashback Beats the New Sega Genesis Mini (and Flashback 2017) 

Just seeing the title, before watching the video, I was like "is he out of his mind??" But then, 1) I didn't know there was a 2017 and 2018 versions of the Flashback 2) I had no idea the 2018 had a better emulator 3) I had no idea AtGames cared about improving his products 4) I had no idea the 2018 Flashback read SD cards Bottom line, EXCELLENT video! I truly learned something!

My five reasons are: 1. It can play original cartridges 2. You can plug in the original controllers 3. It has a very intuitive menu 4. You can add more games from SD card with the firmware update 5. And with other firmware updates you can: -Add more platforms like Sega CD or 32X -Modify the Built-in games cataloge

2018 was the magic year for Atgames. Sadly, most retro gamers are all done with them. '18 model is their best yet and with cart slot and sd card slot, save states and rewind we are looking at the best of all worlds for Genesis fans with a library. Not 100% perfect emulation but solid enough to make me happy.

For those still looking for the 2018 Genesis flashback I seen them at Kohl's and OfficeMax stores they were also at GameStop and Target but most don't have any left

Most excellent review. I was recently in my local Target and found the Sega Genesis Flashback 2018 on clearance for $39.99 each. They only had two in stock. I purchased both units and I'm quite pleased after adding the firmware update to allow SD card access. Now I have hundreds of Genesis games to choose from. The best part is, emulation including audio is spot on!!! The 2.4 ghz controllers are very responsive as well. Definitely worth picking up even at the full retail price of $79.99.

Actually I have both the flashback and mini. I honestly prefer the Atgames Flashback over the mini due to better controller response and game list.

Can you just put in a sd card with games right out the box or do you need to update it

I recently bought a used Flashback not knowing there were more revisions. I must have got the 2017, looks exactly the same as in this Video. The first thing I found out that Sonic 2 doesn't run as smooth as on the original console or the Mini. How is the performance on the 2018, same as the original?

Man. Streets of Rage 4 is coming out tomorrow! I’m excited to play it, and since I own the Sega Genesis Classics collection, I’ve been playing the old Streets of Rage games. I mainly bought that collection for SOR, Golden Axe, and Altered Beast. Those were some of my favorite games growing up. However, now I’m getting the itch to play other games from that time period. Lol I decided that I want to either find an original console or one that can play older games. I’m 100% fine with buying cartridges, however, how do you go about getting games on the SD? Where do you get them from? That would be legit. Some games I’m thinking about trying to get are Budokan, Mystic Defender, Quack Shot to name a few. Hell, I don’t like sports games, but I’d be down to pick up Joe Montana or Madden. Those games were sweet.

It would be great if there was a 2019 edition or 2020 edition or a Japanese edition.

I have all 3 of them(MD Mini,2017/18), the 2018 version, I got a mega cd 1 case for it and cut it down so it fitted it, it looked quiet nice, one problem I had with it is it runs at 60hz not 50hz so PAL games would play to fast, like some Mega CD FMV games, so you would have to play NTSC version of the game on it, so could not play the Mega Power Mag Demos, I like the wireless controllers. The 2018 version can be hacked to play games and add covers to its menu, I got mine from ebay and it was £25.

I prefer the AT GAMES one myself. (A) The AT GAMES one has a cartridge slot. So you can play old SEGA GENESIS games from back in the day if you still have them. (B) The new SG MINI gives you 'Street Fighter' II. But you can't play it. Because you only get two 3 BUTTON controllers. (C) The AT GAMES version gives you two 6 BUTTON controllers. So all the games are playable. And any SG game you find on amazon should be playable.

What's the difference between 2017 and 2018 model?

The 2018 Flashback for me is absolutely perfect, I have every game installed on an SD card with cover art for every game INCLUDING Sega CD games, it takes original cartridges and original controllers. Why anyone would pay £300 for the everdrive when you can get this is beyond me, emulation is great for everything.

I found my 2018 Genesis flashback for around $20

Worth pointing out that the Legends Flashback system from AtGames last year does almost all this and so much more. It has the same guts, the same Genesis Plus GX open source emulator, and the same Genesis controller ports. But you also get a ton of arcade games and some NES games built into the system. And via a firmware upgrade, you're able to load up additional arcade roms, NES and Genesis roms (And SG-1000, SMS, and Game Gear), and even Sega CD iso's. No 32X support though (Genesis Plus GX doesn't support it) and Virtua Racing runs slow. The only differences besides the cosmetic casing (Which is cheaper looking with the Legends Flashback, but also much smaller) are the substitution of wired Genesis controllers instead of the wireless controllers and the omission of the Genesis cartridge slot. So unless original cartridge support is crucial, I suggest instead buying the Legends Flashback. A sequel to that is just now hitting stores and even adds in some Colecovision and SNES games. If it retains all of the capabilities of last year's system and includes the ability to play Colecovision and SNES roms off SD card as well, even better.

The 2018 model is the only AtGames Sega console I would actually recommend, I actually really like it! 😃 I also got the 2017 version for collectors sake as well, and the 2017 version just seems very choppy on the frame rate. Saying that, some games like Sonic 3 will play on the 2017 model, whereas on the 2018 model it does not... But also obviously as mentioned on the 2017 model it will play the game with a poor frame rate. 🎮 Saying that though, I think if I remember right I played Ecco 2 🐬 on the 2018 model and the sound was crackly?? So still some small minor issues, but compared to the 2017 model, the 2018 model is an underrated third party gem. 💎 Basically it was too little too late, as then a few years later we got the made in house Megadrive Mini.

AtGames actually made a good Sega Genesis emulation console? I've seen a lot of the other ones, mostly at a CVS or Walgreens but they never really interested me. I bought the Sega Genesis mini so I'll just stick to that one. Plus I lost my Sega Genesis games so the cartridge slot would be useless for me anyway. I also like that you don't have to hack the Flashback console to play other games because it comes with an SD card drive so you can play other games saved onto an SD card.

Wait I thought I had the Sega genesis mini already but apparently I don’t. I didn’t realize they had a Sega genesis flashback 2017 and 2018 AND also a mini. I thought it was all Sega genesis mini 🙄🤦🏻‍♂️ I feel so stupid now. I just bought mine like 3 years ago when I did and didn’t think much of it I even tried using a cartridge and it didn’t work or so I thought. I just realized it has a very faint menu option at the bottom saying “cartridge games” which I’ve NEVER noticed before bcuz I was too busy going to mortal kombat 3 and 2 🤣🤣🤣😅 I thought the point is you can’t use cartridges but you can play the set amount of original games. So this is essentially functioning like the original Sega genesis where it DOES play games but better right? I can’t believe I overlooked the cartridge games part….IF I had seen it at some point I may have just thought it being faint was a way to say that you can’t play cartridge games 😅🤣🤣 I mean it would kind of make sense considering old games like mk if you go over a character you can’t choose it like smoke in mk3 unless you unlock him. Now I’m excited to buy genesis classics! Anyone know if mortalnlombat 2 unlimited is a legit game? I wanna buy it

Got the Genesis Mini, two 6-button controllers (in addition to the two 3 button controllers it came with) had it overclocked, and got a USB with the entire U.S game library for $185.00 USD. I'm satisfied. Edit: And I'm not talking about the True Blue USB. I bought from a pro. All the games are glitch free.

Does it play ALL the original carts? Because the last Atgames systems wouldn’t play most carts like Super Street Fighter 2. So i wouldn’t call them “better” until that’s looked into.
