5 Signs You're Dealing With A Dark Empath 

To be perfectly honest, I’ve seen these traits in myself 😢. It’s a work in progress and very very difficult. But I’m working very hard to change my behavior because I want to be a better person for my family.

I keep reading and hearing that dark empaths have high dark traits and high congnitive empathy, but very low affective empathy... But there must be a version of the dark empath with high affective empathy, because I think that's me. I do feel the pain I have caused to others, in some cases it still haunts me and I feel extremely guilty and ashamed, I know my empathy isn't just coginitive, but I do feel the pain, the joy, the sadness, and every emotion when I put myself in other people's shoes. I feel all that as if it was happening to me. Yet I keep engaging in manipulative behaviors anyway, and I use my empathy as a tool to act and say the things people want to hear, to get my goals, and feel guilty and I hate myself throughout the whole process because not only I understand the pain I'm causing, or that I know I will cause once the deed is done, but I feel it, I can't believe I'm betraying or hurting or lying to someone that trusts me, it has made me sick sometimes in the past. For example, one of the many things I did: I was in a relationship with my now ex girlfriend, but I kept cheating on her, which felt good for the moment, because the sex with other people felt good, but then I felt extremely guilty; and to do it, I usually lied about having a girlfriend, in one ocassion I met a girl on Tinder, that eventually fell in love with me, I lied to her about having a girlfriend because I knew she wouldn't date me if she knew I had one. She was very open about her feelings which made things easier for me, and I could act, and say everything she wanted to hear, I ocassionaly went on with full monologues about what is right for healthy relationships considering my past fake experiences I was telling her, etc, a complete hypocrite... but when the time came, when I realized the whole thing went too far and she even told me that she loved me, I had to step back, I came up with a lie about me having to leave the city to hide the fact that I was going back to where I lived with my girlfriend. And the whole process felt both good (because the sex was great) but horrible, at every moment I knew I was betraying the trust of a wonderful person, I kept telling myself when I saw her smiling and joyful and hopeful about us, "what am I doing?", and when I said goodbye for good, and she cried a lot, I came back home crying too, realizing the pain I caused and feeling it myself, I felt horrible. As for my girlfriend, I felt the same, I couldn't look at her in the eyes, but did it anyway and put my best face on so she didn't suspect anything, all while feeling like the piece of shit that I was. And feeling all that didn't stop me, I kept doing it, until the guilt was too overwhelming and I tried to commit suicide, for which I'm on therapy right now. But regardless of my personal case, my point is, if being manipulative with others while using empathy as a weapon for said manipulation is what defines a dark empath, there must be a version of it with high affective empathy. Affective empathy won't necessarily stop someone from doing these horrible things to others. You can shut down that affective empathy for brief moments to get what you want, and then feel the whole overwhelming stuff at once later.

Dealing with a dark empath is something many people can relate to. But the sad thing about it is that most people do not even realize when they are dealing with such people because it can be so subtle sometimes.

Malignant narcissism runs along the same lines - they seek people out who they decide are “weaker” mentally and manipulate them further. I have lifetime experience with this because of my father. You will need to cut off all ties and move away in order to stay alive, literally.

i honestly know a few people like this. it makes me sad because i have a really hard time leaving people behind even when knowing they really aren’t that good of people. it almost makes me pity them to the point i can’t leave them behind.

my ex is like this. at the time we broke up she made everyone turns against me, made rumors about me and our relationship to make people pity her. just now, 3 years later, everyone knows how manipulative she is

It seems that i have become a Dark Empath...which makes me wonder where and when did i messed up on my path.

My narc ex used to say she was an empath all the time, but never specified which kind. Wish I knew this then.

This one really hit home. It's good to understand your trigger points and your weaknesses as well as understanding the origins of it. We are then told that we need to block those people out of our lives. What if these people are two of your closest family members and the only way to block them is to walk away from your entire family and existence. I have been trying to find a name for what they are and now this makes total sense. Any response that you would do in this situation just makes it worse as these people then play the victim card and because they are only that way with you, you the victim is always seen as the villain. The alternative to walking away is shutting down which most people including myself, resort to doing as there is now way out. All of your triggers, weaknesses, insecurities are compounded for over 30 years. This leaves you broken and alone as you then find it difficult to make other relationships so you are always all alone. If you leave, you are all alone and your family will be upset with you for leaving. You then occupy yourself with work and that's all you do and do not live. You only social with your dark empath's and their family which becomes a vicious cycle because the bad times outway the goods and you have a false sense of family. You never start you own family and friends because of this false sense and always hope that things will change or people will change. You try working on yourself but there is always a trigger that these dark empath's know that you have and resets all the self improvements that you have done which leaves you without energy to move on.

Dang, this is me... I am sort of aware of it though, and choose to not act on certain things.

I think I might have a friend like this…

My ex boyfriend and I had a 12 year (should have been 13 years) friendship since high school. We dated for a couple of years until we split up, but kept the friendship until now. I found out he's a dark empath because of him having those signs. After things were going downhill within our friendship, I tried to end it the first time a couple of years ago, but he told my dad that he didn't want to end the friendship between us and we both made amends until things started to get toxic with drama and fights later on after renewing the friendship. I confronted him about his dark empathic personality and felt resentment towards him and he blocked me on social media and other communication so I ended the friendship the second time for good. I figured out he manipulated me to stay with the friendship when he told my dad about feeling shocked on the first end of our friendship. I don't feel guilty or regret of ending the friendship the second time and I still have resentful feelings towards him to do this day. Be careful of being friends with dark empaths.

The primary difference between a straight up narcissist and a dark Empath is the Empath's ability to read your emotions, then use that knowledge against you. This ends up as a deeper understanding of their victim, which allows them to be far more manipulative than the general narcissist would be capable of.

I love to discuss psychology and analize people around me, especially if they are friends and seems in need of assistance. Yet, I'm always afraid by the fact that I could be a dark empath. Though, the fact that I fear being one, isn't it a proof that I might NOT be such a person ? Anyway, I must keep in mind I come to people to help them feel better and cope with their problems, not to manipulate, hurt, or gossip them.

can u do a video on signs YOU are a dark empath? Because I'm pretty sure I am. I can be so charming and funny to make people do what I want but the second som1 is even slightly rude to me I become cold and irritable. I have EVERY SINGLE ONE of them, except sometimes I do feel a twinge if guilt. but I don't want to get attacked for "self diagnosing" and im too proud to go to therapy or tell my parents bc I don't want to admit to being weak. vulnerability makes me sick to my stomach. whenever I see the comments like "my ex used to be like that" or "my friend was like that" I can't help but think I would be the ex that hurts others and friend that manipulates... it's happened before. so please make a video on it lol

I am dealing with someone at the moment, who shows all the signs in this video. And somehow, I still wonder "what if I am wrong?" I always do this. And while I personally think it is good to challenge your own perspective, it also means I ignore some pretty bad things, because I want to believe in the good side. And it allows them to harm me quite a bit. How do you distinguish between the intentional and the unintentional? How do you make them stop being cruel and controlling?

I wonder if it's possible to have Dark Empath who shows their dark side to their entire friend group, targeting each of them individually one at a time? Has that happened before? How large is the limit to their friend group before they get exposed or feel uncomfortable doing it? I find this very interesting, thank you, I'd love to look into it more.

I don't think I'm or anyone I know is a complete dark empath, is it possible to be like a shady empath? like that one spot under a tree that changes shade when a leaf flips around. I do use empathy for self gain or to kinda shut down other people, but only if they're being negative to me or my friends, I mostly stay nice and stuff but I can be like this at times or when the situation calls for it. ha, it's being batman, except... yeah I'm not batman.

The disturbing part as a piece of the whole is that the amount, kind, and type of this behavior can cause a person to self sabotage their own potential out of pent up anger,frustration, and the view point that the perpetrator is emotionless, as well as being an appetite that will not be sated.

same just like my EX, when we broke up she made everyone against me, but by the time everyone saw her true colors and my friends are back together. She tried many times to come back but my friends did not let her in. So I think its better to cut these kind of people maybe :(

Are there any countermeasures if my father is a dark empath with signs no.1,3~5 and treats my mum worse than what she deserves 80% of the time? Like I understand that he had given immense amount of effort to build up wealth and have a great environment for our family to live in, but you can't down play everything my mum also did for him and the family just because she grew up in a rural area and didn't went to college!

I was diagnosed as a Sociopath when I was younger. When I reached highschool I did a lot of self reflection, and self exploration. However, while I was able too control the tendencies and impulses, I probably became more of a dark Empath without knowing it...

I’m aware that the spectrum between empaths & narcs isn’t linear, or black & white. But the term ‘Dark Empath’, to me just adds far too many shades of grey. Anyone can feign cognitive empathy even psychopaths & narcissists in order to ‘fit in’ so to speak. The difference being however, is that they can’t exhibit emotional empathy. To me dark empaths don’t exist- they’re just narcissists who’ve mastered how to mimic cognitive empathy, with the addition of a very robust facade

The negative stigma around this personality that a lot of psychology channels have been pushing since it was first introduced and acting like they have nothing but evil intentions 100% of the time is getting weird.

They said that I couldn't give them every thing they want. May be they were correct.. They deserve someone better than me. I ain't at par to them. May they find a competent partner.

Where my mom was from , dark empaths were just a basic factor of society. When a sibling , usually a bad sister , was old enough to move out. She would talk trash about the others to their "clicky friends" , other dark empaths. And from there , it would spread like wild fire.

Idk ever since I learned about dark empathy I’m terrified of being one I know I’m an empath and I had a trauma filled past I really don’t like the idea of me being a dark empath like I don’t want to be anything remotely harmful to anyone I’m currently in therapy but still I am terrified of being a dark empath
