I'm one of those Moto Roader fans. I can't play it like when I was younger, but here is my $0.02. Always use Steering B. Get good with the hopper, you can cut corners with it. The warp when you fall behind can be used to your advantage to avoid some obstacles. Memorize the maps (and especially use the preview before a race) Stay on the inside of curves. When you get really good there's nothing more fun than drifting through a track like it's nothing.

Man, seeing all these great retro videos makes me sad. I was never able to get a 16-bit or 32-bit console. I went from Atari 5200 to NES to N64. My neighbor had an SNES and my best friend had a Genesis and PlayStation so I didn't entirely miss out, but I had never heard of the TG16 when I was a kid and I didn't have one of these great consoles in my house until I was an adult (and I still don't have a TG16...just the mini).
@triplej26532

China Warrior I find to be a decent game, yes it's a bit too simple but, I do find it decent. I do play Altered Beast more over China Warrior. Darkwing Duck: The version where you die by the piano for standing around too long, got to love that punishing moment. Ballistix is like an attempt to bring over Crossfire board game into a videogame that falls flat. Other two you mentioned I never played before and they do look bad looking at the gameplay. For one of my favorite TurboGrafx-16 games are Splatter House and Neutopia.
@Steffs
@Steffs 3 года назад
One of my friends in elementary school had Ballistix on the PC and we thought it was a cool vide9 game version of that board game Crossfire. We had a lot of fun playing it versus against each other so I have fond memories of it. Though I never played the TG-16 version, so I don’t know if they messed something up in the conversion or if it’s only fun in one on one with a friend.

Thanks for another great walk through gaming history. Although, I can't say that I agree with you about China Warrior. I still play it today. I did go into it as a better version of Kung Fu when I first played it back when it was first released. I loved it when I would get a super punch in on a boss with the big fist. (I totally agree with you about the other games on the list. As a veteran of the original Console Wars, I used to argue that my TG-16 was King above the Genesis . China Warrior, Blazing Lazers, and Legendary Axe were my "go to's" for that. :) Keep on doin what you are doin!

I was a TG-16 fanboy myself also, I would unfairly count PC Engine releases towards my argument why it was better than the Sega Genesis which made it more formidable, but the western releases overall, I have to admit, the Genesis had the far more robust library of quality official releases. I really enjoyed Side Arms but when you would die they would put you back on screen right in the middle of an impossible enemy swarm, many times (read: almost all the time) making it just not possible to survive long enough even with temporarily invincibility to continue on without dying immediately because you can't get your bearings to make it out of the swarm before invincibility ran out. It simply made an otherwise fun to play shmup unplayable.

China Warrior's graphics blew me and my friends away back in '89. But, yeah, horrible game. A year or so later we had a similar experience with Veigues Tactical Gladiator. As bad as Motoroader is, I still bought it when it arrived on Wii Virtual Console back in the day and had fun with it! While its flaws cannot be ignored, I do give it points for being a weapons based racer, predating Super Mario Kart by a few years, even having up to 5 player multiplayer compared to Super Mario Kart's 2 player! It wasn't until another 2 years (or a year and a bit in the PAL regions) that Street Racer would come along with up to 4 player multiplayer! I actually beat the first 2 tournaments in Motoroader, but even after trying the 3rd one again upon getting my PC Engine CoreGrafx last year, I just can't do it, no matter what weapons and upgrades I buy.

I also had a feeling DW would be on the list: I still sometimes flash back to when AVGN reviewed it and him saying "GET THE F*** UP THERE!" when he was trying to get on to a platform, or "I don't know what kind of f***** up duck can't f****** duck." when he was trying to crouch down. Lol, just freaking hilarious.

While I do acknowledge that China Warrior is a terrible game and it was certainly the worst of the launch titles and is in the running for worst game on the system. I do hold a certain nostalgia for it from my youth. I have many fond memories of going over to my buddies' house and playing China Warrior with the sound off, making our own Bruce Lee kung-fu sound effects while Carl Douglas' Kung Fu Fighting was blasting on the stereo at a soothing billion and a half decibels. Ah good times.

I had high hopes for China Warrior; hoped it would've been as good as Blackbelt for the SMS.

Could've swore I saw China Warrior as a top 50 for TG-16.. thats why I downloaded the rom and played it one time

Some of these games were included in the TG Mini for some reason. I can play China Warrior and have fun with it, but that top view racing game... ewww... I'd change CW and place that platform game with the dudes in suits instead (forgot its name, it's THAT boring)

when you said "the power-ups have to match what you're able to avoid in a level", I immediately thought about "Starship Hector" on NES hahaha. that game's only power up is, health refill...... yeah, you can only trust your main shot and there are enemies and bullets everywhere, which I consider this game the hardest shmup on the console. it's even harder than Recca in my opinion.

Both China Warrior and Moto Roader were included on the TurboGrafx-16 Mini. Why?! It's not like Nintendo put Super Play Action Football on the SNES Classic. I was very surprised when I found out there was Darkwing Duck game on the TG16. By the time that show debuted that system had clearly flopped in America so I would never assume it would get a game based on a Disney show, particularly over the SNES or Genesis. Heck, back at that time period I didn't realize this "Turbo Duo" thing that got the occasional review in Gamepro was the same console that had those Bonk games a few years back. It felt like the TG16 got TV commercials for a few years but I stopped seeing them so I assumed it had been discontinued. I only knew one kid at my school that had one and he never had the CD attachment and had switched to the SNES once it came out.

The reason why China Warrior reminds you of Kung-Fu is because it is Kung-Fu... more specifically the Japanese version is called The Kung-Fu. I felt that you beat this game up a little too much. I still enjoy this game. Gunboat could most certainly take the place of that game on the list. All the other games, I completely agree with. And you don't know how happy I am to see you didn't put Keith Courage on your list.

I like Keith Courage and played it a TON back in the day because I did not have that many games. An average game for me but back then is was amazing.

@@johnhancockretro so many people rag on it. I still enjoy playing it, but it may be because the same reason you like it. It was one of the only TG16 games that I had for a while. If I was to play the game for the first time today... it might not be so fun.

China Warrior reminded me of the Amiga game Sword of Sodan initially, but China Warrior looks a lot more basic. Ballistix on the ST & Amiga was a budget title that did not review well (and I didn't like it)

I guess ballistic plays off popularity of crossfire board game which I thought was awesome. Unless it came out first. Either way I have played both and I agree with you its a difficult to control game where it is difficult to see what is going on

Honestly Ballistix was fun with 2 human players. It's the Terrible CPU opponent that ruins that game.

Back to Future on NES is my #1 game to hate. Probably because I bought on day 1. I soon learned to fear the rainbow after Roger Rabbit. I knew about and experienced sun burn many times but rainbow burn was new to me back then.

I love my TurboGrafix16. I got one 3 years ago with an everdrive cartridge and downloaded every game ever made into a single SD card in separate, alphabetically-categorized folders. The only games I did not include were the adult-oriented titles with sexual content.

I didn't have the turbo Graphics 16 when I was a kid but I haven't now and I'm a 40 and I got Splatterhouse I think one more and that's it for the turbo Graphics 16 I got to get Bonks Adventure though

I always held China Warrior in the same low esteem that I did Keith Courage. Just kinda dull relatively pointless games. Billistix looks like Crossfire turned into a video game. Strip Fighter was awful. Never especially liked JJ and Jeff.
