Josh. One thing to remember about tiny cast bullets. Be VERY METICULOUS when culling and sorting bullets. ANY visual defect, pitch it. Sort by weight to +/- .000gr

Yep, I have sorted all bullets that I have shot so far.

That’s about the results I got as well. I’m going to try a few other powders. Actually had the best luck with 4227. But it was a 3” group@100 with a 1/7 twist. It’s all about barrel trist and burn speed. Those same rounds gave a 6” group out of a 1/9 twist barrel.

I've got 4 rounds of 20g of Varget to test tomorrow. This will be the slowest powder I have tried yet. I missed a 16" target yesterday at 100 yards with a charge of H110.

CFE223, TAC, and H335 worked well for me out of an AR, 1 in 8 inch twist. I've shot 55 grain, 62 grain and 65 grain jacketed bullets out of it. Just about to load some of my cast bullets. And yeah, just for you, some of them are BLUE!!!
@243Outdoors

I just did a test group with Varget and put 3 in one hole. Your powders seem to be in the right range of burn rate. Mine is a 1-9 twist. I'm getting ready to load up the rest of them, and go back out.

Most cast bullets do not do well driven fast. Try keeping volicities below 2000fps. Between 1400fps and 1800fps is a good start. Over 2000 fps may require a harder alloy. Cast bullets can be very accurate and can equal jacketed bullets in many ways, just at lower pressures and speed.

Coming from a Precision shooter cast groups might seem not totally awesome. However making your own projectiles that cost pennies and sending them down range and landing multiple within a few inches is awesome! Keep it up man. That’s better than some groups I’ve got with cheap ammo in my PSA 15

For faster speeds with cast bullets, slower powders are your friends. More of a gentle push on the bullet.

I need to get back on the cast 223. I was trying everything that I had on hand that would or should work. I have had no luck with sized bullets at .224. I had some pretty good groups with out sizing them. Still pretty new to me. Some people say keep them under 2k fps and others 2-2500fps. Lots of combinations to try.

This was deffinatly a challenge for me in my AR. Seems like 18gr is the magic number for fast burning powders in the range of H4198. I had luck with 18gr of H322 at around that same OAL. H4198 worked well also. This is a great start!

So, I tried H110 today and no luck at all. Crazy flyers. One missed the entire 16" target. I did shoot a few Factory FMJ's and it shot great, so the gun isn't the problem. I may give Varget a try next. I have enough for one more batch of test loads. I'll probably be picking up this mould in the very near future.

I thought about varget as well for a reduced load... never tried it as I was basing my loads off Quickload which was showing a pretty poor burn %. I wanna see this if you give it a try. Hey GunFun ZS get into it lol if you want I can send you a batch of NOE HTC 63gr and or Lee boolits to try. Same for you as well Josh, if you wanna try some 63gr HTC boolits

. I wonder why regular 22 L.R. do soooo much better. Hows bbl fouling w thoes??
@243Outdoors
@243Outdoors 5 лет назад
From what I have experienced with cast bullets in general, there are little inconsistency's with them. I don't think you have that with 22 and factory rounds. The weights vary quite a bit with cast bullets. I don't see any barrel fouling that i can tell. They are powder coated very well.

Looks like fun to do and make up loads for target shooting. Maybe not for Milk Jug Shooting :-) PS: Like the shooting table !
@243Outdoors
@243Outdoors 5 лет назад
Yeah, I need to pick up this mold. I enjoy load development. If I can get it to 1 moa at 100, that should be good enough for a milk jug at 500 yards. Since I overhauled the table, it's been awesome. No shakes and it is 100% solid.

I've had decent luck with H335 in the AR at 16.5 - 18 .0 gr. without a gas check . It may do better with a gas check and the harder alloy . I always wanted to try 748 and CFE 223 also . With the ball powders a small rifle magnum primer gave better chrono numbers also . I think the lighter charges like the mag primer for a consistent burn . Not bad for a first try though .
@243Outdoors
@243Outdoors 5 лет назад
I have some 110 loaded up to try next. The regular primers lit my test rounds, consistent burn who knows. I'm just limited on the powders that I have. I'll find something that will work.
@jamespollard1670
@jamespollard1670 5 лет назад
15 grains of H335 was really accurate with a Lee 55 gr, bullet but would not cycle my AR reliably until 17 gr. You should have a little more play room with a bolt action. Like PC said , cast bullets can be finicky .
@GunFunZS
@GunFunZS 5 лет назад
Good series. I would also want to know if any of the relatively accurate loadings you get will cycle an AR15

I am going out tomorrow with 4 rounds with 20g of Varget. This will be the slowest burning powder I have tried so far. It should do decent, I hope. I have 12 rounds left. So if the Varget does good, I will load a few ladder loads with the remaining rounds. If not I'll get some H380 or Win748 from my neighbor for the remaining rounds. I'll try to save a few and see if it cycles the AR. I'll probably go ahead and pick up this mold here shortly.

Thanks. I've been tempted for a while, but it does really seem that people spend more time fighting cast 223 than shooting it happily. If I saw people like you and eagle eye making it work consistently it would make more sense to me. The major appeal to me of 300 BO is that it work in pressures that are much friendlier to cast. It seems to me that if the zinc casting or perhaps lead/tin/copper/? alloys are what will really make the small caliber high velocity worth the trouble.
