Chad introduces nucleophiles and electrophiles in the context of nucleophilic attack, one of the common mechanistic steps of organic reactions. He explains the key characteristic of a nucleophile (a lone pair of electrons) and explains how to distinguish between strong and weak nucleophiles. Chad then covers the 3 most common electrophiles: alkyl halides, carbocations, and carbonyl groups and explains what makes them reactive as electrophiles. Chad concludes the lesson by covering 3 types of intermediates in organic reactions: carbocations, carbon radicals, and carbanions. He explains the trend in stability for each:
The more substituted the carbocation, the more stable.
The more substituted the carbon radical, the more stable.
The less substituted the carbanion, the more stable.
Chad also describes the concept of hyperconjugation which explains why more substituted carbocations and radicals are more stable.

Chad! First of all, I love your shirt! Secondly, I found your videos as I was nearing my second exam and I greatly contribute you in helping me get through it. For this new unit we're on, I will be incorporating your videos into my review earlier on because you are the best on youtube when it comes to explaining these o-chem topics! Seriously, thank you again, I actually was smiling as I was watching this compared to my instructor's lecture.

Ive never been confident with chemistry but your videos are a life saver! I think for the first time I’ll pass a chemistry class with an A or B for the first time EVER. I’ve failed general chem twice, gen chem 2 I barely passed/ knew what was going on. But i just took my second ochem exam and I couldn’t have been happier and confident. ALL because of your videos. THANK YOU SO MUCH

Hi chad, Thank you so much for your videos.. they are extremely helpful. I am currently preparing for an Organic Chemistry exam... I had quick question... why do we put a + on the electrophile and a - on a Nucleophile? I get confused taking into consideration when an element gives away electros it becomes (+ anion) and when an element accepts an electron it becomes (- cation)... could you please help me out? Thank you so much

Hello Jake! I'm working on it but it will be a week or two before I get there. However, I've got several lessons covering the topic in my old playlist. Here's the first lesson: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-krlKEi8aYYU.html Hope this helps!

Hi Chad, In my organic chemistry class, we were taught that hyperconjugation is the stabilizing effect between a σ bond orbital and σ* antibonding orbital present in staggered conformations between molecules with a dihedral angle of 180 degrees. We were told this is why eclipsed conformations experience torsional strain, due to the lack of hyperconjugation. As such, I’m a little confused on this hyperconjugation that you introduce, which doesn’t involve σ* antibonding orbitals and how it relates to the hyperconjugation I learnt.
