The Zetec-R (aka Cosworth EC) was also the name of the engine that gave Michael Schumacher his first world drivers championship. The 3.0 liter Zetec-R (Cosworth ECA), however, wasn't that good of an engine, only giving 3 finishes for Forti in 1996. When it was used in the Sauber the year before, though, it scored some points, even bringing Frentzen to 3rd place in Italian GP.

@palm92
@palm92 6 лет назад
Yeah the OX11 was respectable if a grenade. The OX88 was something like 40-60hp down on the customer Judd and Cosworth engines, and about 100-140hp down on the works engines. Gustav Brunner bench tested one on a dyno and it reportedly blew up after about 5 seconds. The 5V head design was the wrong way to go. It also was subjected to a shitload of vibration due to the bizarre V angle (75 degrees). It's rather unfortunate. The 891 was an attractive design and Brunner always did good work on a small budget. Also Yamaha fired Aguri Suzuki over his performances in 1989 after he won the JF3000 championship for them the previous year. Classy. A Blessing in disguise for Aguri as he would have an excellent 1990.

Actually the BRM H-16 was supposed to have the 2 crankshafts connected directly to each other but the material technology at the time was not up to par with the idea, so they had to make a taller block and add a third axle between the crankshafts to keep the block from cracking under the loads. Result was higher rotating mass, higher center of gravity, more mass and overall more complex construction, which didn't help with the weight or the reliability.

The A11C wasn't supposed to have the Porsche 3512 engine. The 3512 was intended for the new FA12, but it turned out it didn't fit, so they used the A11C only for the first race of the season while the FA12 was being modified. Also, the A11C you displayed was an older Cosworth V8-engined model.

Poor cooling system design was responsible for some of the A4's woes in the Mclaren, according to Peugeot. It had a solid few years with the Jordan team between 95 & 97.Speaking of the Jordan team, you never included the awful Yamaha OX99 from 1992, which rarely made it out of the pit lane without imploding 🤣.

1.) They (BRM itself) ran with it. They had an strange, bulky, unorthodox design which proved to be unsuccessful, but they still used it anyway instead of throwing it away and starting from scratch. In the meaing of "It's too late to stop now, so lets work with it!" 2.) They (BRM cars) ran with it. So their cars ran with that engine. In the meaning of "powered by".

Crazy Borg " Sounds awesome, too." Yes, and here we have YET ANOTHER who CONFUSES the infamous H-16 with the supercharged V16 of the early 1950's!! The real H-16 sounded pretty flat and uninteresting. The supercharged V16 from the early 50's was the one with the memorable sound. WHEN are you going to UNDERSTAND the difference?? Sadly videos and images of the H-16 cars are mated to the sound of the 1,5 liter supercharged V16 used in 1950-1951. PLEASE. They are NOT the same engine. The BRM V16 was 1500 cc supercharged engines used in the BRM P15 a front-engined car used in 1950-1951. The H16 was used in 1966-1967. They were *two different engines* It's not a huge mystery. Last of all. The BRM V16 of the early 50's sounded awesome but was arguably even LESS reliable than the H-16. The latter one at least won a world championship F1 race.

Porsche had a successful V6T in the 80's and to build a new N/A engine, they had a simple idea: remove the turbos from the V6 blocks and put them together to make a V12. That's why that unit is so huge and heavy.

Actually, the Lamborghini power plant was a great engine. When I was in the team garage in Montreal back then, the chief technician said it was a great engine. As a matter of fact, when Ferrari was having problems towards the mid 90s with reliability, the Lambo tech said if Ferrari had the Lambo engine in the Ferrari chassis, it would have been a championship car. Imagine what Enzo would have said if he heard that!!
@neutronalchemist3241
@neutronalchemist3241 6 лет назад
Actually in the mid '90s Ferrari was having problems with aerodynamic, and they had until they hired Rory Byrne in late 1996, so a different engine would have changed little. However it was true that the Lambo engine was not even nearly "bad". Even if not used by top teams and top drivers, it obtained many point-placements (when you needed to be in the first six to score points) and a podium. Ironically, after having tried it, like said in the video, McLaren team refused it for the Peugeot A/4 (because the French manufacturer non only would have given the engines for free, but would have paid to sponsor the team) that was REALLY a turd.
@lewistasso8866
@lewistasso8866 6 лет назад
True, the Ferrari did have aerodynamic problems that made handling difficult, but the chassis itself was good enough with a better, more reliable engine. The aerodynamics, like always, can make or brake a racer. Back then, I saw Jean Alesi dive into a barrier at Ille Notre Dame simply by aerodynamic downforce loss. Take away the aerodynamics and you can have everything perfect, but you will still have no racer.

The H16 BRM engine did win the 1966 US GP at Watkins Glen in Jim Clark's Lotus 43. Whilst unreliable it was immensely powerful. The clip of BRM on the track is taken from the 1967 film Grand Prix and is of a 2.0 litre V8 not an H16. It is also the 1965 chassis not an H16 chassis. It doesn't deserve a place in this film. There were far worse engines around.

Andy Richards The only reason why the car has a race win is just because of jim clark
@tucoramirez4558
@tucoramirez4558 6 лет назад
Andy Richards Actually the H-16 wasn't *that* powerful. While it certainly might have been the most powerful in 1966 that power advantage was easily nullified by the insane weight of the engine. Jackie Stewart who raced the H-16 said:"This engine is so heavy it's best use would be as a ship's anchor." By the time the Cosworth V8 appeared it was both more powerful and way lighter and compact than the BRM H-16 so it's no wonder BRM abandoned it. It's high center of gravity also was a nightmare in a race car.

Thanks for pointing that out, Peugeot never got a chance to succeed with McLaren, it was all over by mid season, yet Mercedes didnt win a race for their first 2 seasons as an engine supplier, they may of been slighlty more reliable as an engine, but barely. Nice video of some of the more heinous engines of F1. However, the Yamaha OX10 series of V10s that powered Jordan, then Tyrrell and finally Arrows through the 1990s also should be added to the list as they were famously unreliable despite years of development in F1. I'm also pretty sure you can add Honda's current turbocharged V6 power units to that list, too. Ford's Zetec V10 could also be included as it was also very unreliable and had very mixed results apart from one good year with Jackie Stewart's team (which was more by pure chance and driver talent imo).

I love the Life engine :D :D In rFactor there was a retro F1 mod that had it and also tried to make it as realistic as it was possible. This ment that with maximum cooling, you were still only able to do like 1.5 laps before it blew up. And on that 1.5 laps you were ~10 sec slower, than with any of the other cars. Also, I think you could have put the McLaren FO110Q there too. I know that that engine was really powerful when it was working, but most of the time, it didn't.

Worth watching just for the engine noises. .......... In the 1970's my uncle was chief mechanic for Lotus. (The JPS special Lotus 72) He described to me that the best engine would be one that would be built so light and so cheap and so weak that it would perform to maximum performance for the duration of the race then come to the end of it's life and break down just after it passed the finish line. In those days money was not regulated and they could use 2 or 3 engines on a weekend if they had to. ........l I guess these engines were built to that philosophy but they over did it.

The A11C was a stopgap design too, dating to 1989 (also a Ross Brawn design). Something went very wrong with the Footwork-Porsche FA12; the lack of communication was similar to the McLaren-Honda debacle of 2015-2017.

The McLaren Lamborghini never raced. It was evaluated, but for 93 they opted to race a Ford HBD7, then they went to Peugeot, before they went to Mercedes Benz/Ilmor

There should be a special mention for Mecachrome. Their '98 engines were so weak that Williams went winless for the first time in many years. I don't know about reliability but it signalled the tragic downfall of the team. I hope Mecachrome is gone too. They did a terrible job.

So nice seeing the old engines when only a bloke with a starter motor was needed to get them running. Get that back into F1 and the sound would return also - where else are engines used that are seized solid when cold? Such tolerances kill all the noise.

A reminder: What I drive now. At the moment, nothing. I used to drive my XJ12 collection before my 4 strokes and leg amputation. I like XJ12s because of the smooth starts and racing suspension with race car handling. Quiet at 90MPH speeds. Driving up twisty mountain roads. Exorcising the Prince of Darkness ( LUCAS ) made 1 a daily driver until the 4 strokes. ( the OTHER kind ) put me into a recovery situation.

Then there's the air-cooled (or sort-of cooled) V8 for the 1968 Honda RA302. One race (ending in a fatal crash) and one practice session were all it did, despite Mr. Honda's belief that air-cooling was the future...

I’ve always been fascinated by the life engine, I find it so funny that they took for ever to develop that engine and what were the results? They attended an entire season and guess what they did not win a single race most of the time they didn’t even make it past the practice laps and didn’t even qualify. My most favorite story is that when they were trying to qualify in one of the races, the car exploded after only 100 or so feet reason being the paint crew forgot to put oil in it!! HOW CAN YOU HAVE SUCH A TERRIBLE PIT CREW LOL 😂😂😂

The Lamborghini engine doesn't belong into that compilation as it was a powerful but underdeveloped engine which never got a real chance.

H16 pattern suffered from being rushed, existing models run just fine decades after without much parts replacement, and one was rebuilt "recently and brought up to half its revving power for 400hp on a dyno. Best sounding engines ever made.

Open and closed book that it was McLaren underperforming and using Honda as scape goat to save themselves. Look at Alonso's DNF, 3 in a row for Monaco, Canada and now France. Also McLaren out in Q1 and Last in Race in France. What more is there to prove? Staff revolt, Boullier not wanting to face post race media.. etc etc.. Same engine as RedBull yet still at the back of the Grid. No hiding and no denying.
