I'm exclusively an XRC and RC collector of Hall of Famers. While watching this video, I can't stop thinking about a scenario: What if they print a new Michael Jordan card everything year. Each time they print it with extra foil, extra black or extra thick or what ever components to make the card disintegrate or self-destruct upon contact. What if they print all the cards that way?
@samhiniang8590
@samhiniang8590 9 месяцев назад
One other point: The only thing that is different between the "Junk Wax Era" and Now is the 3rd party grading companies. People were flipping, trading and selling. As junk wax goes, the companies are still printing and printing even more cards, just different variation. Imagine an '89 UD Griffey, number it to 5, different set numbered to 299, 499, 999, 2999, base, all the colors of the rainbow, all the fractors, different card stock. Then repeat with the mini's.

Yeah, it makes for a different situation with modern cards do. Part of the reason I don't like thinking of now as Junk Wax 2.0. There are some similarities, but a lot of differences too. It's its own unique era of too much printing, with a new context.

Wouldn't it be funny that because the 80s 90s wax era was overproduced that enough people will junk them, and in 30 years or so... we might see a resurgence in their popularity
@scoa

I think there really is quite a lot of interest in quite a lot of cards from this Era. I know for me its still the main era i look at for personal collection stuff. But the ones that seem to have the most interest and value are rarer and/ or harder to keep in perfect condition and/ or have become particularly iconic for whatever reason.

Possibly Zion. Some massive prices early. Will they hold up longterm?
@scoa

I am surprised they are still holding up in value as well as they are right now. He was crazy hyped up right from the get go. His early card prices were astronomical, it was also the first year that Panini really overproduced like crazy. I don't have much faith in his cards long term for the most part. I only buy him if someone has even less faith in him than I do and offer really super low prices, just in case.

What the 1992 update set was hard to find in 1992. What are uou talkjng about. I was doing shows 1992. Lol. 1992 bowman was easy. The 1992 fleer rookie insert too was hot, and money was lost to that.
@scoa
@scoa 2 года назад
1992 update had shorter print runs than bowman due to 1991 update not being popular. It wasn't necessarily super hard to find, but it was printed a lot less comparatively. I'm sure a lot of people did loose money if they bought during the early hype, that'll happen with anything new and anyone who becomes hyped up.

Oh man. Just subscribed. Fantastic video. Got back into the hobby a couple years ago after a 25 year hiatus. I couldn't (still can't), understand how people value guys like Shaq and Robison, and how they value the new guys. @@scoa ha! Absolutely. All my cards had sat in boxes for a couple/few decades. Never looked at them at all. One day at work looking for fishing videos, I see a video with the thumbnail of the 1990 skybox Michael Jordan. I watched that video, then another, and another, by the time I got off work I was 100% back in. I went home that night and immediately started opening the old boxes of cards. By the end of the week there were packages showing up in the mail box. My poor wife had no idea. She had zero idea I collected when I was younger. She's asked me where this passion has come from, because she's never seen it before. I've told her it's always been there, it's just kind of reawaken. I've reigned it all in, the obsession and the spending that comes with it. I've completely focused on what I like, which is what I collected before, I'm a 90s guy. That was my decade. I'm totally back in love with it and I hope to never stop collecting again.

Excellent video. Well done. My only push back is that the hof’ers of the 90s didnt have rare cards. Theres no david robinson rc auto or numbered clyde rookie. Further, they didnt have any social media presence. Now you can have a much more personal connection with players not easily erased. Just Something to consider.

*my only visual memory of clyde was his slam dunk contest. If that was now. HOH etc would be posting and we’d be following his ig lol

That is very true. Less rare cards and less personal connection of fans with players could make a difference. But even with that, it's amazing to me how cheap even some of the rare-ish (like rare for junk wax) of Clyde are. He was one of my favorites growing up (as someone from Oregon, that was almost an obligation while he was a Blazer). But you're right, I do think the context today is quite different. Might keep players in more fans memories for longer.

@@scoa even in Cali the clyde windmill will forever be remembered. Yes its a shame. Great video! I've been thinking a bit lately about the infatuation that the hobby has with Prizm rookies in basketball and football, and agree that one of the "less popular" rookies from other sets may eventually surpass them in value. Edit: Absolutely nailed it on the generational player(s) point too. I cringe right now when I see people paying thousands for Lamelo Ball cards. There is zero chance that he retains value long term when PGs like Gary Payton, Chris Paul, Steve Nash, and Allen Iverson couldn't.
@scoa

Yeah, I don't fully understand the Prizm infatuation myself. There's so many other sets I think are nicer. I think my favorite visually of all base cards is "Origins". Love that stuff.

Are you talking about base cards? Or are there some special inserts in there? The 89 and 90 upper deck, Fleer, skybox, etc base cards are generally like $2 cards. Make sure you check actual sales, not just what people are listing them at. Some people list very unrealistic prices, but never ever sell them.

@verbone
@verbone 2 года назад
I see a lot of people using population counts as a measure of a card's rarity. While it may literally be the case, it doesn't necessarily speak to any value of a card. For example, the MJ Scoring Kings card has double the PSA population simply because it's a more popular (and valuable) card, and therefore, collectors will grade it more often. The Power in the Key card is less common because it's less often sent to PSA due to its lesser popularity (and value).
@scoa
@scoa 2 года назад
In that example though, the Scoring Kings was inserted 1 per 36 packs, and the Power in the Key 1 per 37. Both in the same 93-94 Fleer Ultra. So it was actually slightly less common. And the PSA pop count reflects that in a similar way so it seems a useful data point for this comparison.

In my opinion, I will say that history repeats itself and we were just experiencing a special time in card collecting, early 70s lead up to 1975 topps which was a fan favorite and attracted many new collectors which lead to over production and terrible quality control for 76 77 78 79 along with poor rookie classes compared to a set like 75 the same thing happened in the 90s 83 led to the greatest set of the 80s and a rookie class of 85 which was stacked. Again more people buying leads to overproduction of 1987 7 million sets, and terrible years like 88 and 89. By 94 the baseball market was ruined. Poor rookie classes 94 finest 96 topps chrome, stars carried the sets not rookies. Basketball then took the rings in 92 with a crazy rookie class and the same thing kept happening. What we see today is people reacting to a change of the guard rookie class in baseball and especially football. We're in a great moment in the hobby we just don't see it yet but please be careful on how you move forward. If my theory is correct we will see overproduction of bad rookie classes which were seeing from topps now. It will only get worse. 2018 19 20 21 is the way to go football add 2017
@scoa
@scoa 2 года назад
It definitely does seem like history repeats itself, with slight adjustments, over and over. I also wonder with Panini losing their football and basketball licenses soon, if that may mean they are less concerned with over production for their last couple years. I mean, what's their motivation to not just sell at much as humanly possible before they are kicked out.

@scoa
@scoa 2 года назад
Appreciate the comment. You are right, there is definitely a different context. Overarching idea still holds true I think though that the 'iconic' rookie of a player doesn't necessarily translate to long-term value. I'm not actively like recommending the Ja Certified rookie, more giving it an example of a low pop count base rookie that exists within an ocean of high pop count base rookies.

If an artist makes s beautiful piece of art and spends $10 on material, but the thing created is highly appreciated, then someone spends way more than the production cost. If 50 million of that same piece of art is created, it's supply is way over it's demand, so it becomes super cheap to buy. It's all about supply and demand.
