In today's video, I talk through 7 bad reasons hiring managers reject good candidates. Interviewing can be an incredibly frustrating experience, even when you are a great candidate. While there are many reasons for this, one of the big reasons is that good candidates get rejected all the time, despite being qualified for the roles they are interviewing for. In today's video,. I highlight these reasons and talk through why hiring managers sometimes make the decisions they do so you can understand as a candidate what you are up against.

I feel that this video specifically needs to be seen by actual hiring managers. So they can see why they’re hiring opinions are just falsely wrong in how they are hiring their candidates.

The people who suck at interviewing is a very solid point. I’ve gone to a plethora of interviews where they straight up asked me the worst questions ever. “Why should I not hire you”, “what’s your favorite food”, “which superhero would you want to be”, and “where do you see yourself in the future of this company”. They all suck at that. 💯

Many hiring managers don't have a clue how to interview, what to look for, how to recognize talent or what questions to ask. Hiring is just as hard if not harder than interviewing and very few come prepared or put in the effort. It's a huge red flag and just shows what working for will be like. Most of them just tune out and are not really listening or engaged.

I’ve been saying a whole lot lately that interviews these days are not based solely on qualifications and performance anymore. They’re based on how the interviewer feels that day. You could meet the full criteria and demolish that interview, but if they don’t feel like hiring you then they just won’t. 💯

Another thing to think about is how they will never know that you meet the rest of the requirements until they hire you. For instance, good customer service. They won’t know you know how to deal with customers until you work for them. You can’t assume someone lacks that if you have never even seen them in action. Another one is completing tasks without supervision. Once again, you have never witnessed that because you haven’t hired them. They honestly just need to stop being so picky or else they’ll continue to miss out on great people like me. 💯

I agree. Some things you just need to see happen once employed. Hard to judge everything from an interview.

That Jack Nicolson Tom Cruise scene comes to mind for these hiring managers ... "You can't handle the truth!" Andrew Keener here. I've experience that too. Especially where they thought I didn't as they said "perform well." I found that out when I sent my thank you email. They were quick to reject me. And I asked them what the candidate they went with brought to the table that I didn't. I mean if it's skills or something I'm lacking ... I'm happy to learn. That's when they emailed back that reply. I typically make it a habit to ask that when I get rejected. I find it helps me too.

Thanks for the great information. Curious to your thoughts on including a career gap or not on my CV. I had a pretty gnarly accident that required seven surgeries and quite the recovery time over the past 19 months. I didn’t have anything listed on my CV at first but had zero traction in my search, so now I have it listed as career break | health & well-being. Still not much traction. I’ve had two recruiters offer differing advice and wanted to know what your thoughts were on this. Hope you’re having a good start to the week!

I think that sometimes they have a little recruitment in their discrimination. Also, would be easier if they say how much they are willing to pay, I mean they have a budget. But, they prefer to make the candidate uncomfortable asking the salary expectations. Once, the hiring manager told me :" it seems you have more experience than me". Guess what? I was rejected for other candidates that best fit their needs. 😂

Damn, none of these apply to my situation. From what I can figure is that other candidates are overqualified due to layoffs. Positions I apply for at 5+ years experience, yet I'm competing with 15+ years experience candidates who worked with very prestigious companies.

That’s definitely a reason why you might get passed up on. Hard to compete there too.

Speaking for everybody, the reason we leave jobs is because the management sucks. That has always been my situation. Even if you make some friends, the management will always play a major factor in how long you work there. 💯

Totally. It’s usually related in some way or the other.

I don’t understand why they demand experience when they’re required to train you. You will never need 2-5 years worth of experience to do something that you can learn in a day or 2. Foot Locker was my first job and I mastered the job on my second day. 💯

"No bachelors no work experience....nope can't afford to train this person." "Bachelors...nice, but we need a Masters." "Has a Masters? Cool, but where's the work experience? Doesn't this person know we don't care about degrees? What an idiot!" "Oh wow, ten years experience...but where is the bachelors? Didn't read the application? It's a requirement!" "Hmmm, has a Masters and ten years of experience? Nope, overqualified." "NO ONE WANTS TO WORK ANYMORE!"
