I’ve had the same smooth edge can opener in my house for almost 20 years. It’s a traditional style and still works perfectly. I think that’s the best part of them, because they don’t cut they just release the glue on the seal; the parts don’t wear down like the blade can. I can recommend

James Griffin agreed! I spent about $15 - $20 on the OXO soft grip opener because it’s as smooth as the Kitchenaid one featured here. Some things really are worth the money. Strangely enough, the OXO soft grip salt and pepper grinders are also worth their higher price-nothing like freshly ground pepper or salt, and they operate as smoothly as their other soft grip products

When I first got married we had terrible can opener problems. My wife worked in a kitchen so some of the recipes we made used the giant #10 cans, and they took their toll on even the "nice" can openers from the local target/walmart/etc. I broke down and bought the Fissler featured as #2 here, I made a video the day I got it, and another one last year about the thing, we've been using it going on near 5 years now and it still works as good as the day I got it. I've given them as gifts to any friends just moving out and such, every one has asked where I got them because all their family wants one.

My thought exactly. I have had $1 to $10 manual can openers and none of them impressed me long term. All of them went to hell within 3-6 months. Dropping for $20-$35 for a hand cramp sounds insane to me. For that kind of money, it has to electric.

@@shawbros Good point about the smooth edge can openers. BUT, one disadvantage they also have is, because the edge of the lid is on the outside of the can, you can't use the lid to drain liquid from a can. You can do this with a conventional can opener where the edge of the lid is on the inside of the can.

@@robwalton2007 No, you can still drain the majority of the liquid, by holding the can with one hand, and the lid with the other, turn it over at about a 45 degree angle, and just slightly open the lid until the water flows out.

I dont have the wall mounted swing away but i have 2 old hand held swing away can openers i bought for a buck each at yard sales. Best freaking can openers ever. My mom teased me about buying the second one (yup we yard sale together all the time) but after letting her use one she saw why i snatched it up. So i now have one in house and one in travel camper. And have since got another one for $1.25 at goodwill for her.

I avoid smooth edge for that same drainage reason. Leave a little bit attached to act as a hinge, drain, then twist the lid the rest of the way off.

I was cooking lunch when this came on in the background. I decided to open a can of corn with my cheap all metal simple can opener that I have had for years. Thank you very much for demonstrating the can openers. What I'm really looking for is something that can fit on the keychain. Something that you can put in your pocket that's very small portable and that can open up cans. When you're in an emergency crunch.

I have my smooth edge can opener from the dollar store (it was 2 bucks). I use it for about ten years now and it still works amazing. It's interesting that there are people out there that dislike smooth edge can openers over the regular ones. Like why would you want a sharp metal edge with cutting hazard and metal splints in your food if you could also decide to have a clean opened can? I don't understand.

parents bought a swing a way can opener 35 years ago for about a buck and it still works! even with the rust in some of its parts, truly a high quality product that lasts and doesn't even costs that much. tried some new ones over the years but they never were a keeper and some of them broke within a few weeks.

I agree with you John, the OLD American made Swing A Way can openers were good. Not the new Chinese made ones though! Bought one at Walmart in 2016 for $10.49 plus tax, 3 years in & now it skips a couple spots on the can & you have to go over it again, then use a spoon to lift the lid out & twist it off the can. Even after disassembling it, cleaning & reassembling it, it still acts up. My OLD American made Swing A Way never had those issues AT ALL until it got lost in a move. Avoid the NEW Swing A Way can openers at all costs, the quality is gone now.

We've only had to replace them because, as our kids grew up and moved out, they each took one with them! $9.90 on Amazon or 2 for about $18. We were shocked that it wasn't included in the reviews!

I love my OXO soft edge opener. I use it on everything that doesn't need to be drained (like tuna). For those I also have the KitchenAid because I found it on sale at Kroger. FYI in most cans you can just lift the lid with your fingers instead of using the tool on the OXO unless they used an adhesive on the lid when sealing it
