I show the process of upgrading my homebrew cyclocross bike from a 7 speed drive train, up to a 10 speed drive train. I replaced the cassette, rear derailleur, chain, and shifters along with new cables.

@richietattersall2122
@richietattersall2122 4 года назад
Why? He's replacing the derailluer, he has to replace the shifter, why use a used cable? Depending on the shifter, they come with new cables. I've been repairing and upgrading bikes since the mid 80's, spray a dry lube into old cable sheath, (tubing) I've had to throw ones out because the cable was literally rusted inside it, new ones don't need it.

Try converting a seven speed to a ten speed like this: Seven speeds often range from 40/28 to 40/14. The 40 tooth gear can be replaced with a slightly larger 42 tooth gear while the 28 tooth and 24 tooth gears can both be thrown out and the 22 tooth gear can be replaced with a slightly larger 23 tooth gear. Gear sizes in the back can be 14, 16, 18, 20, and 23. That is only five gears, but that number can be doubled to ten when you add a significantly smaller 34 tooth gear to the crank, therefore increasing the range between 34/23 and 42/14. Additional front gears are ideal for keeping a straight line between gears, so you do not cross your chain through your back gear set.

@@RJTheBikeGuy Why cant they? It doesnt have to be a carbon belt and demand would drive prices down, there was a belt driven( nice bike 3spd though) that was offered at $350 with a $50 dollar discount, thats starting to intrude on cassette territory, demand will drive prices down' I am "allergic" to getting grease and oil on me these days, at the right "price point, I would never buy a derailleur equipped bike.

I've always enjoyed your videos and found them very useful. I know this comment is late, compared to when you posted this, but I was watching you struggle a bit with the chain whip and wanted to suggest you switch hands and put the chain whip in your left hand and wrench in right. That way you can lay the chain whip over the cassette easily, and still end up with both tools in that optimal V shape for leverage to push downward. All the best to you R.J.!
@reecenewton3097
@reecenewton3097 Год назад
Another way is to put the cassette or freewheel tool on the cluster, put the tool in a vise, the wheel now being in a horizontal plane, and then grasp the wheel with both hands and turn.

Oh by the way - your cassette and rear derailleur combination is the exact some one that came installed on my own cyclocross bike as stock. If the OEMs think mating a Tiagra 4600 12-30T cassette with a 105 5700 short-cage rear derailleur is good, it's going to be just fine for us mere mortals. :)
@minhtoi
@minhtoi 9 лет назад
It depends on your rear derailleur dropout mounting. There is no strict standard that the mounting hole be X mm below the axle and Y mm forward/behind. I have a Breezer road frame in which even a Shimano rear derailleur rated at 28T max still hits a 28T cog with the guide pulley unless the B-screw is all the way screwed in to the max. Where as I've been able to use a 32T cog with the same derailleur on my cyclocross bike.

I found this very interesting. I waited all the way to the last to see what you did if you needed to adjust the brake lever height of one lever to match the other....but you didn't (sad). One thing no one seems to mention about is in the front derailleur adjusting. When you shift the gears to the large chainring and you then you shift down......you'll notice the first click in the lever. What that first click does is drop the Fr. Derailleur down a bit so that if your chain is in the large sprocket in the rear, it shouldn't be rubbing on the inside of the front derailleur so that every gear has no position where the chain will constantly rub while riding. This clears the problem of prematurely rubbing a hole in the front derailleur cage later on. But the riders still needs to adhere to the principle of never riding in a cross chain positioning (Lg. Front sprocket to Lg. Rear sprocket & the Small front to the Small Rear). That little click in the left shift lever has a long standing for lack of importance and is the most overlooked item in front gear adjustment. You also might add, if your rear derailleur cable is in like new condition, it shouldn't be discarded. Buy a new RR. derailleur cable and use the old one for the Front derailleur. This saves money in the long run and if you've been in bicycle as long as I've been, buying only one cable per bike saves me a lot of money but it also saves money for the repairs I do for others.

@nunyabusiness5075
@nunyabusiness5075 Год назад
You should definitely find out the width of the rear hub that the frame needs. I messed up and on a 7 speed Mountain bike conversion when I bought a 135mm rear hub instead of a 130mm that the frame wants. It can be jammed in, but it's not the right way to do it. BTW he really glossed over that some 7 speeds will work (if they have a spacer ring), but some will NOT accept a higher number cassette and you'll need a new hub.
