I actually have a story about the most unique “no ego vet” I’ve ever met. Man was in his 60s “frank” on the “Warped Ops Airsoft Field” and he was there with his son, now a good friend, “Parker” also military vet. 35-40. I was 19 at the time and recovering from an injury and came into airsoft with very little map knowledge but a good awareness of firearms and their focuses. I was using a barely operable m4 variant that I got for cheap. Part way through the game Frank pulled my aside and said “ son you got good awareness but your shit at picking your fights.” I was put off by this at first but then he handed me a CNEP “closed Network Ear Piece” the next round of CTF was starting and we were on a high rise with a withered brush on the hill. When the round starts he hands me his custom AR, (don’t know the model never saw it again) his three mags, and proceeded to pull out his binoculars and dived into the bush. My jaw is on the floor and his son is laughing his ass off but grabs me, pulls me over and essentially said, “put that earpiece in and stay with me, we got this.” The game proceeded as such. Frank Call sign “grandpa” called out enemy positions, numbers and approach strategies out to Parker call sign “s**t stain” and me call sign “baby face” we proceeded to hold back, capture, and return across 6 games in less than 45 minutes each round thanks to “grandpa’s” call outs and strategies. To this day I aspire to be as helpful and involving with my community as they were, without them I’m sure I never would have gone back to airsoft until they made it fun and engaging without leaving anyone behind. I also didn’t find out they were vets till we walked back to his car and I saw 2 Purple Hearts and a Silver wings strapped over dog tags on the dashboard. They never said a word or lorded anything over anyone. It was truly a great experience.

My top 5: 1- the “here give it a try” guy, always keen to let other people try his stuff out 2- the fearless rental, the guy who doesn’t care about getting sprayed down and will charge literally anything 3- the sherpas, very eager to help new players, giving them spare kit or giving advice, doing as much as possible to get people into the sport 4- the “ptfo” guys, the guys who would literally die on the field to make sure they get the objective 5- when Marshall’s or field owners step in as a special character of some sort with no affiliation to either team just to cause chaos

Met a few competitive and goofy air soft players when I was doing Mil-sims a few years back. One guy we all called ‘Hawkeye’ was a deadly shot with a bolt action rifle. Me and him got teamed up as Spotter/Sniper. He was a former Marine Recon Sniper and I was about 18 or 19 and we sat down before the match started and planned out a whole covert operation to take out the enemy team one by one. We sat up in a ‘Snipers Nest in an old barn. I told him range and wind speed. When I tell you this man was dead on? HE NEVER MISSED A SHOT and he also corrected me on range and wind trajectory. We are still in contact to this day. He also sent me a graduation gift when I graduated college. He dressed up in his actual Marine Recon BDU’s and Boonie hat. I ordered a guile suit and one for my HK-416 with a 6x scope and bipod that he used for sniping. He was the best player I have played with to this day.

So one of my friends was running in the field and tripped over a 1911 tac with new grips, he took it and when he got out and returned to our rest spot me and some other buddies convinced him to go give it to the admin of the event. Like two minutes later this guy comes up crying because he was so happy that we returned his gun. Now whenever I find anything lost on the field I think about what happened and I always find the owner, it just makes the game feel that much better that you get to see someone smile because of something you did 😊

In my experience, a lot of the noobs I meet don't wanna leave spawn because they're scared of getting hurt. I always try to help them out of this fear of getting shot by taking point and showing fearlessness, hoping it inspires them to push on once I get hit. Other times I'll gather a smaller group and push objectives in a spartan push. Literally screaming "WE ALL PUSH ON ONE! THREE TWO ONE GO! GO!" gets the adrenaline going. One guy brought a foam scimitar and led the charge with me numerous times. I call it being the Spartan.

My team got caught on the door and couldn't go in, so I just shouted to all these people at the door to stack and breach. I was waving people in going GO. GO. GO. And this one kid asked me why don't I go in with them. So I whipped out my pistol and said ok. Went in, and shot 2 people and got out. Best time of my life.
@Infidel343

yes because annoucing the push to the enemy by shouting when you are going to attack at the top of your lungs is always going to end well for everyone involved. never understood the logic personally. its hillarious when they do it outside rooms in urban aswell. i just hit them stacking up in the middle of the countdown. works every time but is extra damaging if you buzz grenades round the corner when theres maximum bodies outside.

I would have given a shoutout to any player with some kind of medical training and equipment. Airsoft can be dangerous sometimes and those with the knowledge to do something about it are the mvp in my eyes. Seen plenty of nasty cuts and heat strokes where i play.

that's why I have a anime medical cross patch on my rig, with some basic first aid items (gauze, bandages, wipes, etc). Feels good since it takes a long while for other medical help to arrive.

I'm a mix of tech support and watching out for the little guy. I was playing a walk on game of paintball with people ranging from 7 to probably around 35ish and I got stuck with the kids (and a few adults) but I went up to this tower and one kid got hit just outside his armor and he backed into a corner and started crying so despite being in a key position to lay down suppressing fire, I dropped my gun and pulled this kid into a more protected corner and made sure he was alright. Helped him down the exterior stairs of the tower and to the side lines and through all that, I magically never got hit. Of course it wasn't till I got back up the tower that we got flanked and some guy came up the stairs and shot before I even realized what happened lol

While I don’t personally play, I knew a guy who would start every year with a new helmet (one of those hard, smooth ones like the ones in the military). Every time he got headshot, he would take a marker out and mark the spot where he believed it was hit. He would then go to the next game with a mini mural of whatever he felt like drawing on the spot that was hit. Last I saw, he had 7-8 of these beautiful helmets from previous years of playing. Dude seriously loved the game and tried several times to get me into it, and I just might have to hit him up after this video.

Most military guys have no idea what they're doing unless they actually have a combat or police role as a profession. I've played with a bunch of military guys who are intel and only once did I ever play with a guy who was even remotely close to special forces. He was an Army reservist who was activated around post 9-11 and went to Afghanistan in the early and mid 2000s. He was reserve infantry with his sniper qualifications and because of his sniper status, was then attached to a special forces unit for the duration of his deployment in 2005. I got the fortune of befriending him and we'd go shooting too (real guns) and taught me how to remain calm, how to tactically move and shoot, and helped strengthen my shooting skills. Also the most chill dude in airsoft

I remember when I was just having fun with my horribly impractical loadout(a grenade launcher, two double-barrel shotgunnade launchers, and a pistol with a massive drum mag). I was doing a custom game with a friend on his 3-acre property, and we called it, "Rambo mode". As long as you can withstand the shots, you are still in the game. I went to a point to capture it, and I ran right into the enemy team. I unloaded everything I had into them and was shredded by heavy fire. Once my team caught up to me, the whole other team was gone, i needed resupply, and I looked like a prune from all the bruises. I don't remember this, but apparently, I said, "They didn't count on one thing; I slept nine hours last night." then promptly toppled over and slept for the next, what, ten hours? Easily my most fun game.

I suffer from depression, which makes most things not very exciting for me. Last year, I played my first airsoft game and I have never been so "in the zone" in my entire life. I slid in the mud and broke a toe on a wall but I didn't even know until after the game. That's how much fun I was having. I absolutely loved it and I am so excited to play again starting this spring! My first game had rentals (me included), milsims, speed-softers (anime sticker-bombed guns and all), reinactors and some local guys who know the field like their back yard. I guess that I'm kind of a combo of these types. Primarily the "unique player" I recently got out of the Army, and after 4 years as a cadet, and 3 in the active component, I was just tired of being in uniform, and didn't want to take airsoft so seriously. So I decided that I would dedicate my airsoft craft to cosplaying in airsoft. So now, whenever I got out to a field, I am typically cosplaying Star Wars or something, and have the unique replicas to go with it. And obviously, I am also the, "just here to have fun" guy. Cosplaying in airsoft often isn't practical, but it makes it fun, and gives me great opportunities to shout out movie quotes, haha!

It's still expensive relative to my current monthly salary, but if converted to dollar, the most they can spent individually is only around 100 dollars(!) Me myself only spent something around 30 bucks for my plastic AR-15 spring rifle+aftermarket 3D printed pump action parts, a dummy aimpoint sight, and a spring pistol. Anyway, it is really is that cheap because we only use local airsoft brand. Low to mid quality relative to American/Japan brand, but hey it's good enough and get the job done.

I do wish I improve my skills, but it doesn't discourage me as I do try my best to play and I'm not afraid of getting hit. I know what I signed that waiver for and I don't care about the consequences. If anything, I have myself to blame and take full responsibility. I even give new (or experienced) players a "good job" on hitting me or "good game" when a match is over. 5. Newbie Coach. Back in 2011/12 I was stationed at Fort Campbell. As luck would have it, the only other guy in my unit who was into airsoft was my roommate. He was every bit as into the GBBR perfection craze as me. Too much money spent on too many guns and parts- we'd spend hours tweaking and testing in our barracks room. When we went to games, we wore our issued SAPI plates and the same rack systems/pouches we wore in the field and on deployment. Train as you fight and all that. We were the high speed gear nerds of our respective platoons. We used to go to a wonderful little indoor field in Dickson, TN called Mooseherd Airsoft. We must have gone two or three weekends of every month for awhile, dragging along any guys from our unit who were curious about "what it was that we did when we were alone together..." We'd always get a kick out of the kid coming up to you in the staging area, pointing at your grenade launcher and asking you in a quivering voice if they were going to use that on somebody- replying "absolutely" and showing him your opposing team armband or raising our hands when the referee would ask who was playing for the first time. Got a lot of people asking if we were at Campbell and proudly displaying our chicken sandwiches for them. More often than not the GBBRs would fail, leak or break. We ended up spending more time as "combat advisors" than as active players. Finding clumps of 12 year old rental gun kids hiding behind the first bunker in front of the spawn, we'd roll up on them and ask what the plan was. Usually one of them would offer some kind of answer and you'd simply refine his plan and present it to the other kids there as if you are issuing his orders. We'd use our replica PEQ-15 visible lasers to designate windows or doorways we wanted suppressed. We would break the cluster of kids down into two fire teams and begin bounding them all up and down the field- turning some ordinarily low contribution teammates into a pack of ferocious, trigger happy hyenas lighting up any target we illuminated with a laser- ourselves only shooting at the occasional opposing player on a flank or in the blind spots- protecting our guys backs. If we prepared to breach a doorway, we'd take the brunt of any bb spray ourselves and allow the stack of kids behind us get a chance to rush the room. Any kids turning back after getting hit were usually grinning ear to ear and ready to return our offered fist bumps and high fives. So one day, fresh from the field having trained another batch of child soldiers, we get approached by the owner of the field and a couple of referees. He shakes our hands and introduces himself. He said (and I'll heavily paraphrase) that we no longer had to pay admission to play at that field, we were welcome any time- the reason being that field attendance was growing while we were there. Normally older players would show up, cheat the chrono, cause injuries and start arguments. They'd play aggressively and by the early afternoon only a few other players were left. The owner went on to say that when we were there, he noticed more and more sales of ammo, rentals were staying out longer and attendance was only dropping off in the last hours before closing- we didn't steal the glory, start drama or discourage the younger players from wanting to stay. Well I'll tell you. That gentlemen is how you make a pair of combat veterans bashful. However: We were soon dethroned by the Ultimate Newbie Coaches, and I'll never forget how cool this was to find out. Still at Mooseherd weeks later we noticed a larger-than-usual crowd of kids wearing ACU. Not just a badly fitted shirt of Chinese manufacture. I'm talking ACU uniforms, properly sized. Trousers bloused and ROTC ranks. However these kids were ranging wildly between 10 and 20. I didn't think they were JROTC or ROTC though due to the haircuts and lack of affiliation patches. I noticed a lot of the older guys in this group were walking around checking the younger ones to make sure they were staying hydrated, had all their gear. My buddy noticed the same thing too. For awhile we just remained puzzled and tried to figure it out. Where did they come from, who were they and how had this hierarchy developed? One day we found the cause. At the cash register we saw an older gentleman handing out bundles of wristbands and masks to the older guys who then distributed them to the even younger guys. The demeanor didn't suggest it was a father of 50 kids treating them all to a day at the airsoft arena. We waited until the moon camo cult moved into the staging area and approached the older gentleman to ask what the deal was with the group. He told us (again, paraphrasing as its been over a decade now) that he basically started a youth group to cater to the kind of kids who would bypass things like the Boy Scouts to only wind up in a gang, prison or addicted. They did airsoft, paintball, ATV riding, camping/outdoorsman survival training, real steel range days and some other stuff along those lines. Airsoft was a staple apparently and everybody was really into it. The older kids got the "team leader" status and were responsible for a few of the younger boys in the group, who in turn would take over when kids would age out. He basically just told them where and when, picked up anybody who needed a ride and paid all the admission/ handled the guardian waivers. We were floored by what he was telling us, and man, was it awe inspiring to see in action. Real cool dude. Wish I could remember his name. Ritchie Robertson or something like that is ringing a bell...

I’m a lost an found hero that always finds myself being a newbie coach. Barrel covers get lost all the time at my arena and there’s always a party of rentals there for a birthday party and I like helping them out, whether they’re on my team or not. Every now and then a kid will push up to the arena’s kill house with me because they think I’m a pro because of my kit.

I was at a CQB field with a few buddies once, and it was very few players that day. Then a pretty big birthday party walked in with about 15 players. We could tell the vast majority of them had absolutely no experience, so we spent the several minutes before game start showing them how to operate the rental guns, wind the mags, et cetera. Once the game started, it was so cool to have a little squad of newbies trailing after us, taking orders, and just having a blast. Definitely one of my favorite days.

Me and a friend are going airsofting for the first time in six days and we’re both super excited. I just wish I had more money because my age I can’t get a job. So it will be a little before I can play again, but I’m excited for that day. I’m very big into airsoft and I love the community. I’m so excited to be part of it.

The "just there to have fun guy" is always the best to be around. I have a story about one such guy. Once when I was in secondary school (high-school for my American friends) we went on a trip to an airsoft venue, Redhills Adventure centre. We got briefed, given rental guns, etc. The teachers and the students who weren't participating watched us through a glass window. However, halfway through the game my English teacher asked if he could join in. The staff laughed and gave him a spare rental gun. This guy hadn't even heard the briefing, but he decided to join in anyways. I remember seeing him back in school with cuts and bruises everywhere since he was just wearing the mask and had only one mag for the entire day. That day can only be described as epic since he was like a "Dark souls boss" for us to mag dump.

I definitely see myself as the newbie coach, good tech, and just here to have fun guy, I love taking care of new players and, fixing the really expensive issues for like 5 bucks at most and just shooting at the enemy and getting shot at, it's a game not life or death, and I love this sport to death

In all the comments of any reviews of anything that isn't a 1911, glock, m4 or ak there's always comments saying: don't get this, there's no parts and the tech won't fix it and they'll kill you if you ask them to. It also really hurts if you wanna be the "unique guy"

The veteran one I have a story about my first airsoft game I went to there was a guy everyone one called smoking fox. This man cared a sniper he bought a built from his original military issued rifle and he’d always have a huge cigar in his mouth and always played alone. He’d leave that field with the dog tags that day over his shoulder and I think that was the coolest thing I’ve ever witnessed and made me wanna stay in and build my own guns to better me at the game. Just expiring man

My first Newbie coach was the game ref, my first time playing, i had watched youtubers like slio, novritsch, jet desert fox, and you, so i kinda had a inkiling of what i needed to do, but my ref was awesome, he was screaming starship troopers refferences at the top of his lungs, and his enthusiasm got me so hyped up, i ended up getting a few kills til i was hit. it was a very good experience and I am super thankful for the way he acted, i was a little worried about getting shot after seeing some of th eclose range sniper oopsies.
