8 Embarrassing Ways You Insta-Failed That You’ll Never Live Down 

There are ways to fail a game with dignity... and then there are these. Here are the lamest ways games choose to insta-fail you, come on games give us a break, yeah? Enjoy!

I was shocked when I got desynched after killing a guard in Assassin's Creed 3, since they are not considered civilians. Turns out that the guard was actually George Washington.

"Accidentally killing civilians." Yes, "accidentally."

What's the logic in following a train? It's A TRAIN. It's not like it's going to make a sudden turn and fuck off to the Bahamas.

Don't forget about that iconic Assassin's Creed moment where you failed because a guy you just rammed your blade into 'detected' you.

It's worth failing in QTEs sometimes, to see the protagonist die a hilarious horrible death (Tomb Raider is case in point), right?

The worst one definitely had to be GTA: SA's train mission. "you lost the train" .... It's a fucking train, It's on rails, it can only go in 2 directions, forwards and backwards. Literally just catch back up to it.

Building on the 'following someone too closely' fail, what really grinds my gears is games like GTA. When you have to follow someone in a car, you have to keep distance but this makes no sense when your target stops at a red light or in traffic. You have to drive erratically by not staying in traffic or driving up to the light and stop 5 car lengths away from them leaving masses of room for no reason. Surely that's more suspicious?!

One time in AC2, I was chasing a story target on foot, and I saw the assassinate prompt pop up. But instead of plunging a blade into my target, Ezio thought it would be best to pull off a leaping double assassination on 2 civilians over to my right, instead of my target directly in front of me. This gave me an insta-fail, and restarted the mission for a very salty me.

My most rage inducing moments come when the game gives you an AI partner and they decided that the best place to be is right in my line of fire.

I tell you what is an annoying auto fail. When you try to lasso a dead man's horse and the game decides that that's just not in character or something. It's what the horse would have wanted

how about the arbitrary timers that run out even when you are seconds away from reaching the next checkpoint or final goal for the game to blow you a giant raspberry and boot you all the way back to the start to do it all again. there's also the ever dreaded 'Network connection failure' that always appears when your about to win...

The "accidentally killing civilians" made me think of my first playthrough of Oblivion. I went full story-mode, only did things in line with my super-optimistic wood elf archer characters' moral standing. So one day I have to save this farm from.. I think is was goblins? The place was being overrun by goblins. Now I'm a pretty decent archer, so I took position while the goblins were busy fighting the farmers' two sons. One, two, three, four goblins down.. And as I let go of the fifth, perfectly aligned arrow - one of the brothers JUMPS INTO THE WAY, takes an arrow through the head and is flung across half the field. His brother was so caught up in the fighting he didn't notice I just shot his brother. I'm really good at stealth, so yeah.. No bounty or anything. My character kills the rest of the goblins, offers her condolences for the loss of a son and brother, and is on her way. In time, I forget completely about this having happened. My character is of good moral standing, doing swell stuff all across Cyrodiil. One night, I decide to let her sleep at an inn. I got SO SCARED when my character wakes up in the middle of the night by that guy from the Dark Brotherhood.Figuring it's play along or get assassinated, my character joins the Dark Brotherhood and one thing led to another and whoops she now runs it. I imagine she still just sort of hates that she's in it.

My favorite was in Assassin's creed getting a game over for accidentally killing George Washington.

I have a few: 1) Failed mini games/missions/objectives during a fight (DANCE WATER DANCE) 2) not having the one item you need for that particular moment (worse if you need to go out of your way to get it) 3) enrage timers (not clearing a fight fast enough causing an auto fail [heavily used in FFXIV])

7 animal companions that we would love to have as a pet. You could include Wolf Link, horses, Mike...

First time I played breath of the wild (aka 'go anywhere: the video game) I walked to the edge of a cliff, climbed down until I could see the bottom was maybe 2 metres away, and then jumped off. Link insta-died and I was instantly discouraged.

I'm a simple man, I see Big Smoke, I click on it.

The worst way to fail a game that I can think of is to get in trouble for stealing Nastas' horse after he dies in Red Dead Redemption.

The most painful QTE that happened to me didn't result in an insta-fail; it was much much worse than that, in assassins creed when Da Vinci wanted to hug Ezio. BUT I WAS TOO SLOW. The look of disappointment on Leo's face haunts me to this day.

I remember there being a specific part of Final Fantasy IV: The After Years where, if you didn't have the right party for a fight, you'd lose automatically.

I'll always remember my DRIV3R insta-fail. It occurred when I bought the game.

OMG, the instafails in darkness realms from Zelda Skyward Sword were the nerve shredding bane of my existence!

I like how 6, failing to keep up, uses an example of a mission where you really have to try if you expect to fail by letting the target get away. Freddy will stop at certain points to allow you to catch up to him. He also has god mode until he reaches the park and leaves his bike behind, which still annoys me to this day.

The "Ring Out" has a plus side too. In some particularly tough fights in Weapon Master mode in SoulCalibur II, you can use a Ring Out to get an easy win. The ferryman mission is a good example. You have to hit them 20x before they kill you, but a Ring Out, oddly, counts too. It's also a good method for surviving missions where you're outnumbered.

Those DBZ Ring Outs were the most infuriating! These characters fly for Kami's sake! I'm not mad, you're mad bleh

If I'm doing a long game session, I'll use cutscenes to use the bathroom. I leave the controller behind, crack the door open and watch the cutscene from the comfort of my toilet. And then a QTE happens and I'm trying to decide if it's worth it to run from the bathroom with my pants around my ankles to see if I can press the button in time.

Honestly, the most confusing thing about Ellen's OXBOX fanfic is that she had Jane take Mike along for the stealthy bank heist mission. And what, Andy just stayed at the studio? Seems preeetty OOC to me...

I just love the insecere ways NPC's respond to Nate dying, that would be a good idea for a video. Worst NPC responces to death, nudge nudge, wink wink

Extra points if a game puts one of these in once, and it brings the rest of the game down. Case in point Metro 2033. You've had allies before but they could generally take care of themselves. Then comes a section near the end of the game where you have to travel through an area with infinitely spawning self destructing creatures. And your ally dies far too quick. Even more bonus points if an ally that's supposed to be helpful would be easier if you didn't have him along.

OMG I LOVE ELLEN SO MUCH!!!!! 😍😍😍😍😍 That train mission in San Andreas gave me rage nightmares. When I finally beat that part (found a way to ramp the bike onto the train), and literally jumped up, threw the controller down, and started screaming at the TV in excitement.

When Ring Out happened and I saw Link, I thought I knew where the video was going. It didn't go that way. Kudos Outside Xtra. Kudos.

Keep it up, wishing you guys the best in your videomaking (also, maybe just...ignore some of the comments about Ellen in this video...yeah...) On a personal note, I've fallen victim to that 'chasing/following targets' insta-fail in Assassins Creed 4; one moment that sticks in my head was watching supposedly normal soldiers/civies (the mission target in this case) just suddenly jump in a surprisingly limber way. It was...unexpected.

My favourite insta-fail/hidden ending is in Fatal Frame 2, when Sae attacks Mio if you abandon her sister Mayu at the end of the game. (It's been several years, but I believe it's implied Mio ends up with the same fate as Yae originally did.)

Seeing a time limit and panicking. I remember a puzzle game I never beat because at the end you have to defuse a bomb and I just panicked and die...

That part in Dishonored 2, when you have to rescue Anton Sokolov from the clockwork mansion. I didn't time some of my jumps properly and Corvo ended up assassin paste on the glass ceiling of the assessment chamber.
