As someone who was married for over 50 years before losing her husband, I have to say that you are absolutely right about selfishness causing so much damage to a marriage. It's hard to work that trait out of ourselves, but it sure makes marriage sweeter when you figure that out early on. Seems like now people don't want to admit that all those other problems are actually selfishness, because evidently it sounds better to call it something else.

Happily married for 30 years and it’s easy for us with this one principle: we are the most important thing to each other. More important than money, more important than being right, more important than our individual wants, more important than other people. Nothing at all is worth hurting each other for. We’re both all in and that makes it easy. If you are putting anything else before your spouse’s feelings, better examine that.

I agree with you 100%. Especially about selfishness. You also can’t keep score with each other. It doesn’t matter who gets the credit for doing something as long as it is contributing to the wellbeing of your marriage. I’m not saying you shouldn’t both be doing the right things. I’m just saying it doesn’t matter if one does 10 good things and the other only does 5. Both of you working on your relationship (to keep it healthy), is what’s most important. It definitely is the most important relationship of all. Our children grow up and have their own lives and families. Husbands and wives need to always be there for and committed to each other, throughout all of life’s ups and (especially the) downs!❤

Love this. Especially guarding your body and mind. Committing whole heartedly, I have found, switches off any interest in anyone else. I only see my husband in my heart. I’m fortunate that he feels the same about me. Fortunate that we both work on our marriage. We both acknowledge this truth and ‘do the work’. It’s worth it. There is such a peace that comes with commitment, and joy is often m found in duty.

I married Mr. Right 2 14 81. I believe I heard Dr. Dobson or Zig Ziglar say, don't marry someone you think you could live with, marry that someone you know you couldn't live without. My husband reads our devotions to me every morning while I put 'my face' on (make up). Then we pray together, ending with 5 min, deep breathing and stretching. Highly recommend the daily prayers!!

Absolutely! Humility and trust, never seek revenge for some perceived slight - communicate instead. To any abused and God fearing women if you've forgiven unthinkable acts of cruelty again and again, spoke with your husband about the issues in a kind, non-judgemental, non-blaming way, then took it to get professional help... If your husband does not hear you and is abusive or employing narcissistic destruction tactics still, God will help you escape - just ask Him. Particularly if your children are at risk. Yes God hates divorce but His Son died to free captives from oppression. Abuse is not Love, God does not join together pretenders to believers as unequally yoked. We must have willed it in our flesh which needs to be repented of. Whatever the cost do not lose your soul 🙏

If I read this list I could have married when I was 14 because I just have this values within. I am not married because I have never found someone who shares the same ones. I have been with the same person for over 11 years, but even if we shares the most, he does not give up his hobbies for me, or the time with his stuff, not even take care of the space within the home( which is mostly his belongings). He wants to marry me but I won't till he learns what it means... Communication, selfishness and time is all we are missing... Like 3 things out of this list😭
@Sheryl777
@Sheryl777 Год назад
I think one thing that people think when they think of minimalism, is that it's a one time thing. Not true...Yes, the largest part of getting rid of extra stuff may be mainly a one time thing, but we are always going to have to occasionally go through our things and do away with things we don't really need. It's not just a one time effort basically.

In this list I missed mutual respect and equivalency (as opposed to equality) in partnership. Maybe because you assume that these are already a given in marriage, but a groeing number of people getting married are never taught these, or are actively learned the opposite (like the umbrella of protection)…

Is it possible to have a good marriage without trust? I don't want a divorce but I also do not trust my husband as far as I can throw him. It seems silly to divorce someone because "your honor, he lies", when everything else is so good. He's a great provider, an attentive lover, a wonderful father. If I ask for something, he never says no. But I don't trust him. At all.

He used to be a pastor, and he's been giving people good life advice for many years. He's also a very successful author & he's had a successful marriage for many years. If he can't give advice on these things, no one can. Btw, since you obviously don't know, a degree does not magically turn a wicked person into a wonderful & wise angelic being. There are good therapists, & there are also many who are very bad. You really shouldn't take life advice from someone just because they memorized some stuff long enough to pass a test on it.
