Omg I still remember all the controversy that this song had because people thought that she predicted the situation in Chernobyl before it happened. She even had to publicly explain that this song was just a coincidence but there's still people who believe in all those conspiracies about Marina trying to warned the world about an intentional attack to the Soviet Union. The '80 were definitely a crazy time.

Fun fact: Marina released her single ‘Radioactive’ exactly one day after the Chernobyl catastrophe, on the 27th of April 1986. It stayed #1 in most Western European charts for at least a couple weeks if not months, mainly 235 days in the U.K.

Fun Fact: 'Radioactive' was supposed to appear on the 1986 film soundtrack for 'Top Gun', but was edged out last minute in favor of Berlin's 'Take My Breath Away'. I still have the vinyl.

So many contemporary vocals really fit seamlessly into an 80's music style. This song especially, her voice is kind of breathy and ethereal.

My mom was a kid when, “Family Jewels,” came out in the early 80s, and in college when Marina began her Electra Heart Project (partnering with MTV) from ‘86 to ‘89. … Good thing too, because it had a parental advisory warning, which was pretty rare for a female artist at the time, I think. MTV released all eleven singles as a, “movie,” around the end of that year, and from what I hear from my mom, it was an event. So glad they rereleased and remastered it for the 25th anniversary in 2011. Of course Radioactive releasing one day after the Chernobyl tragedy was just EXTREMELY bad timing. Also… Marina’s still alive. She’s just in her 60s now and her career, while somewhat waning, is still going strong. She just, “killed off,” Electra Heart. Apparently the writers of Hannah Montana were inspired by the Electra Heart Project… somewhat. Only they leaned WAY TOO HARD on the double life aspect, for some reason. Leave it to America to misunderstand what made a thing in Britain so popular…

Marina released the song exactly two days before the Chernobyl accident and after that her career was never the same. The single spent 7 weeks at the #1 spot on the Billboard HOT 100 Chart, and sold 10 million copies worldwide. Even though this wasn’t enough to make Atlantic Records believe on her potential. They delayed the release of the album several times that year, but at the end “Electra Heart” has became her most successful project.

Fun fact: this song was originally called Radio Active, and was about Marina's favorite local radio station. It went through various reboots including Radio Achtung! Radio Hacker and Ray Deakiff (Marina's milkman). It was only after watching an episode of Science Workshop on geigercounters that Radioactive became the hit we know.
