@Itsjusta Hellcat well, Dr Honda was very careful in his observations. He never criticized the other specialist's approach, just offered alternatives based on his own style of therapy, and he did complement Doug the Counselor a lot. If the other party does the same, there is no harm. It's the same as two professionals swapping ideas and opinions for mutual growth.

This is the main problem - he is not saying what he wants or what he wants from her. I had a boyfriend like this - at the beginning, I thought we wanted the same thing but as time went on - I become this crazy person who forced him to do staff he did not want to do ( without even noticing it)... He was just like Mike - wanted something but could not tell me what it was and I was not able to read his mind.... i break out with him because I become tired of being in a villain role all the time...

To be fair to Mike, what went on in Ukraine before he left was a lot. She told him she doesn't love him, she threw the ring back at him, she had a complete melt down about his lack of religion and quesitoned how he could be a good person if he isn't religious, all while pressuring him to immediatly put a baby in her... they never really resolved any of that trauma and then she comes here and does nothing but complain (some of it valid), and nag him, and criticize him and his habits, she calls him fat, she told him she doesn't think he has a high IQ... I mean, how could you possibly want to continue a relationship like this, I just don't understand why he didn't just tell her he'd like her to go home instead of dragging out the 90 days just trying to put her off every time she talks about planning a wedding, which he clearly doesn't want anymore. It is also very interesting that Natalie said it was hard to hear that he doesn't love her anymore, but she brushed him off as overreacting for being hurt when she did the SAME thing to him. I think they would be best off if they just cut ties before they just keep hurting eachother.

But since Natalie doesn't speak ukrainian, but russian ( in russian language there's only one word for love) I would say she puts some special meaning into it, which doesn't have anything to do with our culture.

While watching this session I was thinking how Doug was doing a really good job in helping them to open up in a way that Dr. Honda would probably approve of. He helped Mike acknowledge that he's not really happy with Natalie which sucks, but is pretty huge of him to admit. While watching the next episode, I'm curious to see how Dr. Honda reacts to Rachel's therapy style. Somehow I feel he won't exactly agree with how she focused solely on the sleepover and not on helping Natalie become of aware of the bigger picture of fears & insecurities that may be causing her to distrust Mike. But this is just total speculation.
@MsAmos97
@MsAmos97 3 года назад
She did stress the importance of trust in long-term relationships, and suggest Natalie talk about her insecurities openly with Mike. I think despite the helpful feedback, Natalie contorts the advice, molding it to fit her confirmation bias, and essentially uses the session as ammunition to hurl further accusations and insults.
@silviaraquel827

@@MsAmos97 True. I guess because the session with Doug didn't go as she had hoped she considered it a failed session. I think it would have done her more good to have a solo session with him since he has a better perspective on both parties and was overall a great therapist though. To be fair, Rachel only got to hear one side so that's all she could speak to. I just felt that her approach could have been better. (I'm no psychologist though so it's truly just massive speculation lol. I'm mostly curious to see how Dr. Honda sees it). It's unfortunate Natalie felt that because Rachel validated her concerns it means she's somehow saying Natalie is right....which as we've learned from Dr. Honda, is not the point. Validation does not equate to acknowledgement of being right. Thanks for your reply!! I love the comments section on these videos because I feel like I'm always learning!

This couple really confuses me. Natalie was the first one to say she doesn't love Mike, but she has no problem marrying someone she doesn't "love". Mike has now said the same thing during their therapy session, but she is shocked? Why wasn't it understandable for Mike to be hurt by her saying she doesn't love him, but it's supposed to be understandable for her to be hurt by him essentially saying the same thing? They both have their own issues, but yikes. I also don't think I'd feel comfortable marrying someone who has said they don't love me. Cultural differences or not, if someone is telling me they aren't "in love" but they have strong feelings for me, that revelation would not encourage me to walk down the aisle with this person. But maybe that's just me (and Mike).

First time I disagree with Dr Honda... on love expression in different cultures: I think in all cultures it's a fair expectation for the person who wants to marry you to be able to also tell you they love you (not talking of arranged or forced marriages of course). Nathalie is religious and therefore marriage should be a sacred lifelong commitment that requires as much "being sure" as saying I love you, if not more.

No. I would also not say I love you to my partner being in Natalie situation. Love is not a forgiveness card or transaction. I don't know if someone has mentioned it yet. But because of what Natalie said about her ex husband it made me believe that she is traumatized from him and that warped her definition of love and made it as strict as it is for her. She said he never said it back when she said it to him, so I think it made her believe that what him and her had wasnt true love, and that her definition of love was not a true bond, so she waits a long, long time to ever say those words now. She kinda does what he did, does she not? Unsure if it makes any sense (I am bad at explaining these things in english), but it makes sense in my head.

i get so fed up with everyone putting the blame on mike. look he has his own issues and lack of communicating his feelings too of course, but this is a common issue a lot of people have, i feel like its common knowlege to go into a relationship expecting someone to have issues with communication as we are all different and unique. no one can mind read. But Natalie literally throws passive aggressive remarks at him almost all the time, then is happy when she bullies him into doing what she wants him to do, i can't beleive no one is seeing this. she can't even express love and care to mike in an affectionate way. both these people need someone very different from each other. Natalie needs someone she can boss around. and mike needs someone who is constantly caring and reassuring. Natalie's main problem was not showing any love and affection after she threw the ring. and sure mike is at fault for not expressing he needed that but, i also feel like if you love someone you would do anything for them, she is well aware what she did hurt him, and yet didn't go straight to him to comfort him and make sure everything was okay. in fact she went straight to trying to make sure he was showing care and love for her and comforting her (in airport ) Just because mike is wearing a bluetooth earpiece doesn't mean everything is suddenly all his fault lmao. relationships take two people to make work

I guess this episode answers me the question about my last relationship, I am from China, I have different definition about 'love' as my american ex, when he first said he loves me, i thought we were at the same stage, so yea, I said i love him back, with 90% in, I did have faith to be with him for the next couple of years, after that, idk. Now it seems like his ' i love you' mean i have feeling for you. To be fair to him, he did have plans to maintain long time relationship with me, but something went wrong, some huge differences between him and I. After this episode I realize our breakup was the right thing to do.
