Good ole wobble socket for distributor hold down bolt. Well let me keep crawling in there for what size it is. 😂 think I saw 9/16 basically 14mm as socket was spun around .

As the longtime owner of a Chevy Silverado I think GM’s decision to stick with the design that placed the distributor in the rear of the engine to be an excellent example of the Big Three’s refusal to improve upon their designs even if it means copying someone else’s design. The Japanese automaker’s explosive growth came from taking many American designed products and implementing improvements where needed. I like my Chevy truck but IMO the best thing GM ever did was ditch the 305, 350 platform and replace them with the LS based platform.

I bought a 99 k3500 crew cab with the 7.4 and I'm chasing my tail with trying to solve issues with this engine. The previous owner did replace the distributor and it still would run worth a crap. So I got the truck and I pulled the distributor to inspect it and it looked fine. I have another distributor just in case but I did re time the truck and it ran half way decent for a little bit but then started to run rough and I think I messed it up when I tightened down the hold down bolt for the distributor. so I re adjusted it and I even pulled the driver side valve cover to make sure I'm at TDC, everything was spot on. Now I did remove the mass airflow sensor and clean it. I've replaced all the plugs and regapped them because they were gapped to .060 and some were at .070 so now they're at .050. it still ran a bit rough and I replaced the idle air control sensor and TPS because everything was factory. It did run better and I checked the timing with my timing light and I'm running at 26* of timing. I know a lot of people are saying to be running at about 4* but I don't see that being possible on the vortec but then again this is my first. I did purchase a new ignition coil today that I'll install tomorrow and also I'm pulling the oil pan to check the rod bearings. Now I did notice the passenger side knock sensor was broken and not even hooked up so I'm wondering if that is messing with the engine running and idling smoothly but I just read about 14 pages on a forum of a guy chasing a issue on his k3500 and it ended up being the o2 sensors jacking up his readings into the computer that completely messed up his fuel table on it. Once he changed them out the truck ran great. I'm just not sure what else to check. Also I know it seems like I'm throwing parts at it but in all honesty nothing on this truck has been changed under the hood and it has 164k on it so I figured well I'd be changing all this even if it were running fine just as a precaution. If you have any ideas what else I might check please let me know. It runs rough at idle and seems to not want to stay running for long. thanks

check engine light? the distributor doesn't have any adjustment, its either right or wrong, timing is adjusted by the computer. I'd plug it in to a scan tool first if you haven't already
@slimer240
@slimer240 4 месяца назад
@@DaysofPainandVictory no check engine lights and I verified my timing and it’s right on the money but I will need a shop scanner to fine tune it for the cam sensor. However I’m going to have to pull the engine and rebuild it because it has a slight knock and I noticed the crank pulley wiggling.

I have 96 Chevy like yours. Green but mechanical wise the same pretty much. It’s down. I’ve replaced fuel regulator, the coil, ignition module, crank sensor, fuel pump assembly, fuel tank, fuel filter, and now throwing codes for distributor and cam sensor so I’m going to swap those but I’m not to mechanically inclined. Lost me on lineing up before taking distributor off. If you could help me there I’d appreciate the knowledge

you will want to find top dead center(TDC) on the number one cylinder before pulling the distributor. To find it you should pull the number one spark plug, and turn the motor over by hand until the piston is coming up on the compression stroke, if you plug the spark lug hole with your thumb while turning the motor over, you should be able to feel it pumping air on the compression stroke. If it is the exhaust stroke, the piston will be coming up but the exhaust valve will be open therefore no compression. When you have it on TDC on number one, the rotor in the distributor should be pointing towards the number one cylinder. The reason this matters is when you put the new one in, you want it to be in the right sequence or else you will fight getting the timing correct

So my 99 c2500 Burban just died and had the same issues and symptoms. I’m waiting for my new distributor to ship. I’m thinking my distributor probably wore out at the gear ⚙️ or has loosened up like yours and has lost timing. Once I find TDC Comp stroke, can you adjust timing to 0 degrees by using a TIMING GUNE and the marks on the balancer? Any good advise is greatly appreciated. Thanks

I just lined up the timing marks and made sure the rotor was pointing towards number one cylinder.

I'm currently chasing a miss on #3 and #4 on my 99 big block in my Suburban. Put in new injectors, new plugs wires cap and rotor and it still didn't fix it. Pulled the upper intake, tested 3 and 4 injectors and they're fine. Now I've got to replace the flexplate and when it gets put back together I'm going to replace the cap with an all brass contact cap, the aluminum contacts in some of the caps can cause cross fire and I'm hoping this fixes my miss. Thanks for the video.

These came on the truck when I bought it, so couldn't tell ya where to find these. @4wheelparts is a great place for wheels and tires in general, they might be able to help you out. One word of caution however, these particular aluminum wheels are specific for either the front or the back, so when it comes time to rotate the tires I have to dismount and remount which kinda sucks.

Something else, huge wire protectors, all in brackets literally right above the distributor, underneath the a/c line.
@jewelleannwilliams8076
@jewelleannwilliams8076 3 года назад
Let's say 5 or 6, 1 inch protectors, and they are in brackets that are bolted to the top of the intake manifold. We can't move them at all, and they are placed in such away that it is even hard to see the distributor cap, you can just barely make it out if you tilt your head and squint really hard while poking your tongue out the corner of your mouth. Forget sticking your hand in.

Question How Did You Set Your Engine Back To TDC Or You Don't Need To On K3500 7,4
@DaysofPainandVictory
@DaysofPainandVictory 2 года назад
I kinda talk about it starting at 4:45 you have to set the timing mark on the harmonic balancer to TDC, and then check the rotor orientation, it should be pointing at number one cylinder. You can also turn the motor over when you are just before TDC on the harmonic balancer and put your thumb over the #1 spark plug hole to feel if you are on the compression stroke. If you don't feel the compression on your thumb you're on the exhaust stroke and will need to turn the motor all the way around again to get to the compression stroke. This will likely take an extra set of hands though.
@hamcheesecola
@hamcheesecola 2 года назад
you can also check by poking a screwdriver into the #1 spark plug hole. if you feel the piston you're at TDC, if not, make another revolution and try again
@bouser210
@bouser210 Год назад
I think mine was two revolutions before I felt the piston come back up. 1999 c3500 7.4
