Let's get to the heart of coherent breathing! The technique is also known as “Resonant Breathing”, “6:6 Breathing”, and “Even Stephen” breath… after its original creator Stephen Elliott.
In this rare interview, Stephen shares his long voyage of discovery - you will learn how he uncovered the Coherent Breathing technique almost by accident when researching the visible effects of advanced meditation practices on brainwaves… and how discovering the practice of Coherent Breathing was only the beginning of his research journey.)
For specific advice on how to master the technique watch my first interview with Stephen here…
Stephen is a very rare individual; with a Western background in advanced electronics research and engineering, underpinned by a deep fascination with Eastern esoteric Chinese medicine, martial arts and Daoist ideas. His atypical worldview and sophisticated skillset meant that, as biofeedback tools became more advanced towards the end of the last century, he was uniquely placed to uncover the elements of the coherent breath.
Stephen is the president of Coherence LLC and the life scientist and biofeedback researcher behind much of the fundamental research into coherence.
Stephen not only created the original Coherent Breathing Method, he has also used his mastery in electronics research to single-handedly invent a number of unique biofeedback machines designed to measure the impact of the technique on the body… which in turn have led him to uncover hitherto unknown facts about the respiratory system.
Hear more about these discoveries in my second video with Stephen here… • The Coherent Breathing...
Coherent Breathing has begun to pop up in yoga classes and lifestyle magazines, but don’t let the simplicity and accessibility of the method fool you… it is so much more than just a relaxation technique. It is a way of “hacking” your circulatory system, improving your cardiac health, gaining control over your physiology & nervous system, and, when done properly, even altering your brain waves and improving your cognition.
You may have heard about it in James Nestor’s bestselling book “Breath”. Nestor talks briefly about how the method is used by Drs Gerbarg and Brown for radical health benefits, both mental and physical…
(Watch my interview with the doctors here…)
• Pat Gerbarg MD & Dr Ri...
(Have a go at Stephen’s breathing technique as it is used by Gerbarg and Brown here…)
• Try Coherent Breathing...
… but Nestor doesn’t mention the inventor and researcher who uncovered the technique that inspired them!
Because Elliott’s work is outside of mainstream scientific journals it is rarely referenced, however his book “The New Science of Breath” is the catalyst that has inspired many researchers to study the method. And they are only just beginning to uncover its potential!

Stephen also wishes to mention his good friend, colleague,and coauthor of "Wuji Qi Gong", Dr. Meng-Sheng.
Stephen credits Dr Meng-Sheng with saving his life over two decades ago around 1995.
Stephen says, without her mastery of Chinese medicine, he may not have been around
to develop Coherent Breathing.

Stephen would also like to acknowledge J&J Engineering for their role in aiding
him in the realization of Valsalva Wave Pro.

I am not sure, but having Stephen measure the impact on him self only doesn’t make resonate breathing clinically proved? Am I right or I am missing somthing here and mixed things up

Coherent breathing works. It’s a great hack. The breath of the experienced meditator. This breath is restoring my diaphragmatic action and that is leading to better moods, energy and sleep. Thank you for this interview.

This will be very effective. Seems like a later variation of HeartMath with different emphasis.

Hi Stephen, good observation! Although, I think Stephen was talking about the breathing rhythm in 2001 which may have been before Heartmath were talking about breathing speed as a prime mover in their technique. They were more focused on directing your attention with the breath.

The ancient Indians have beendoing this for some 3000 years, the practice continues today too..

Hallo I just have a question, is this method a buddhism or Hinduism exercise? Because it sounds like it's from Buddhism or Hindu.

It's both! And also used in Qigong and many other cultures around the globe :)

What do I do when doing deep breathing hurts my stomach? Taking in so much air gives me a stomach ache 😖
@AriaBreath
@AriaBreath 2 года назад
Hey Rhonda, Stephen only recommends moving your diaphragm a couple of centimetres (about an inch), he’s more about the rhythm and softness of breath as the key variables. I would recommend consulting your doctor or physio if that continues 💚

Hi alFeras, thanks for checking out the channel. I recommend looking at the studies by Paul Lehrer and Richard Gevirtz that Stephen mentioned.

Is the RHYTHM of coherent and resonant breathing - in for the count of four and out for the count of six?
@AriaBreath
@AriaBreath 9 месяцев назад
Hi Jakob, the count doesn't matter. The amount of time you are breathing in and out for is what matters. Using a 4 count (even though it's 5 or 6 seconds) is easier to follow and more slow and relaxing sounding.

hi Draw breath, you asked,, how did you come across this as a phenomenon he then rambled on not answering your question,but the funniest thing he said and i quote-at about 9 mins 37 sec he says to your question ,, i never really told this part of the coherence breathing story because i didint want to distrupt her fragile existence and economy ?wtf,come on people this guys a fraud.breathing techniques have been around for thousands of years,yes there are some good new ones,wim hoff,box breathing ect,but this guys just making it up,close your eyes and listen to the words hes saying its nonsense.
