What mandatory tests are given in your school district (USA or abroad) to determine English language proficiency progress? Please comment. For more ESL teacher vlogs as well as weekly teaching tips for English learners, please check out my channel: ru-vid.com
Very interesting learning about all the testing that has to be done in your district. For myself, I'm trying hard to remember what testing was done in Korea at the high school I taught at years ago. There was a lot of testing, mainly focused on grammar and reading so you'd have all these students that could difficult comprehension questions but struggle to have a conversation during class. Loving these vlogs!
Thank you for watching my video. I think as ESL educators we can get lonely because what we do is so unique. Not a lot of people understand what we do. I hope that the rest of testing goes smoothly for you and your students. 💖 What grades do you teach?
Hi Melissa! Thank you for watching my videos and commenting.. Congratulations on your first year of teaching! Always feel free to reach out if you need anything or have any questions. I'll soon be announcing my weekly livesteams on RU-vid. What grade are you going to be teaching this year? What state are you working in?
So the WIDA Screener is basically for students who are brand new to the school, WIDA Model is an ELL assessment you can take at any time of the year, and WIDA Access is basically the MAP test?
Thank you for sharing what a day is like during testing "season." I know it isn't easy. Your students are blessed to have a dedicated teacher. Great video.
As an accredited international school, we adhere to WIDA. it's not a test, it's a tool. The results really aid to better instruction in the classroom, especially in environments where there's a revolving door of teachers and students who are on the fast track to learning English
I'm so sorry to hear that. It's sad that we test our students so much these days! Tell me about the assessments that you use over there. What do you think of them?
Thank you so much for this video! In my school district, testing takes weeks! This means the usual ELL pullouts are not happening. I know testing is necessary, but it's a shame it interferes with progress.
We just finished doing ACCESS testing! That same week we did other district testing they use to measure and compare to everyone else in the district. Poor kiddos 😿
It's so sad when I go to pick up my students and they fear I will be testing them. They're already stressed about pssa testing in April which is out standardized assessment for reading, writing and math. How many students did you test?
The Language Lady I had to test my whole class because they are all English Language Learners, so 28 for me. And Yes they know state testing is coming!!
I'd like to know the average age of your students. We have few int'l students in my school. We test students in 6 aspects of the English language. We use the Ruth Miskin spelling concept. Have you heard of that before?
Hi! Saw this on Reddit. We're based in Thailand. There are no standardized tests for ESL (that we know of) in schools. They normally rely on TOEIC, TOEFL, and IELTS. O-NET (Ordinary National Educational Test) is administered by the gov't though but it's not for ESL. Anyone based in TH? Correct me if I'm wrong. Cheers!
Hi there! Thanks for watching my video. Do you have to progress monitor the students a lot in Thailand? What data do you get from the TOEFL. Our tests gives us a Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing Score and all together equal a composite score from 1.0 to 6.0 (1.0 is equal to a newcomcer and 6.0 being advanced). There are points in between as well like 1.1. 1.2, etc...
@@TheLanguageLady Sorry for the confusion. English is not a big deal for students to get to the next level. But recently, the gov't is trying to "fix" it because of globalization and ASEAN thingy (EU wannabe haha). They normally use TOEIC and those mentioned above to get to multinational or foreign companies for a decent salary. Most international schools let their senior high school students take TOEIC and ace it to get to top universities.
@@TheLanguageLady Forgot to answer your previous question if we need to progress monitor. It depends on the school, international schools show that their "tough" and "strict" and they monitor students' progress. It's just how it works here. No intention to give a bad impression though. I'm Thai too (half Thai) and it's just a general observation. Almost everything here is "Form over content" Nice school, teachers are from the west, parents are happy! marketing gurus get it! haha | My wife and I took the TOEIC test and it looks like it was based on UK standard. I doubt if it was developed here.
Sawatdi-khrap, @The English Crew! WIDA is also used in 500 schools in over 100 countries and we work with about 30 schools in Thailand. if you're interested in learning more about how WIDA works in global contexts, you can get more information here: wida.wisc.edu/memberships/isc/teaching or feel free to email international@wida.us
