Rashad did not want to go on stage, Aaliyah took his hand and at first you can see he wasn't going to walk but I'm glad he did. Their bond was admirable
I agree. Every recording artist at this time would’ve had their success. However short, or long. But my gut feeling is Aaliyah would’ve became one of the biggest performing artist known today. If not the biggest. She had lasting magnetism/complex talent. Each album collaborated a distinct evolution of herself. Nothing sounded the same. In 1994. The debut album(Age Ain’t Nothing but a Number) was successful for a 15 yr old singer. Two years later. Second album(One in a Million) was significantly improved design. Really defining Aaliyah on R&B charts as this international star. 2 years later again. No album. Though still reinventing a pop hit(Are you the Somebody) on Dr.Dolittle soundtrack that became Grammy nominated. Another 2 years later. Several features on Romeo Must Die soundtrack. Like Try Again. A vastly popularized and innovative hit that became Grammy nominated. First movie appearance. Her role was nicely portrayed. Now 2001 is when serious momentum is underway. Third album(Aaliyah). Queen of the Damned film. Further movie projects soon. She had a propulsion going on.
Dang the music was iconic back then. At first I thought this was gonna be an easy win for her, but dang there were some major hits in this category in 2000.
@@crownjewelz4803 when I saw that I was like hold up, she really beat out a lot of legends. Toni Braxton, Beyonce, Macy Gray? Yo in her prime Aaliyah was at the top. When she was alive, all eyes were on Aaliyah.
@@espitiag84 well at the time Christina and Britney were new. But it shows the nay Sayers that try to down play her nah Aaliyah was the girl to beat! And BE! Toni Braxton was seen as the Legend and Aaliyah was just arriving to Superstar status. I still remember this show as a kid. I knew it was either Toni or Aaliyah had it and we jumped for joy when she won
@@MsTrueTyyep Britney and Christina was popping like hot fish grease around this time. Aaliyah just started to crossover to Hollywood and Toni been a powerhouse throughout the 90s by that point. Yeah this category was hella lit
@@TheWonder96 Seriously Everybody was bringing the A game. It was a different time then now. People liked everybody and it was more like the cool kids rather one celebrity and minions. If your song was a hit you were in that's just how it went. If you had a hot single or album or video you was in.
i think she was so overwhelmed with the fact that she won and flew all this time from filming a fucking whole movie was just very surreal. amazing artist!!! ugh😭😩
She deserved a Grammy for Try again, and are you that somebody. She was nominated for both songs. They are timeless tracks and still sound like they were just released.
She was very grounded in every sense of the word. In touch with her core muscles which is where you get your strength. She walked in her power. Class act all the way!
At the beginning of the millennium Aaliyah was just the "It" girl. All eyes were on her, as she was strikingly beautiful, and had a rare grace and sophistication like no other.
I'm sure a lot of people in the industry at that time were jealous and intimidated by Aaliyah because it's very clear, she was about to take over the music and acting scene. She hadn't even fully bloomed by the time she died and it's clear she was on the brink of huge accomplishments beyond the amazing things she did when she was here on Earth. Bless her.
Just look at her body language here, her shoulders going up not just from nervosity and shyness, but also humbleness. You can just tell she was ”everybody’s homegirl” person. I love you and miss you forever ♥️
Aaliyah won over the biggest names in the industry at the time. I so wish the world could have experienced more of you. Your few short years with us you definitely left your mark. May your soul continue to rest in peace 🙏
RIP to Aaliyah❤❤ She will forever be missed and loved. Her music is a form of remembrance. Im lucky enough to share a name with this great! Died too young
I swear she was a star but she was gonna be a superstar she started making hit commercial tracks. Just look who she won the award over the nominees were all big stars sheesh rip
She was so gracious in receiving this award. I wondered if Ricky came up to her later and they both chuckled backstage about how he pronounced her name. So beautiful Baby girl. Sing forever in His arms✨♥️🙏🏾
By this point in Aaliyah’s career she was a household name in the Black community and known to anyone who was a fan of what was fresh, new and innovative in music. She hadn’t been heavily marketed to commercial white pop audiences but her work with Timbaland was starting to influence what was happening in commercial Pop; the evidence being where Pop went less than two years later. All of those ex-Mickey Mouse Club acts inc. Britney might have been more commercially successful than Aaliyah on Pop Radio in 2000 but none of them had the creative control Aaliyah had, each were being overworked promoting products they didn’t believe in and each were resentful of the music they were being forced to make. They were also desperate to experience the type of street credibility and critical acclaim Aaliyah had in spades. Justin would go on to work with Aaliyah’s production team in order to achieve this, while Britney would go on to work with Aaliyah’s choreographer. People down playing Aaliyah’s career don’t seem to understand Aaliyah made it to the VMA’s after 5yrs of releasing consistently original commercially risky experimental R&B. She wasn’t a Pop act with a huge marketing budget, she was somewhere between an Independent/Major Label act. But she was a Music Video Vanguard and she was the next It Girl so it was smart of MTV to honour her. This was Aaliyah’s night, she looked incredible (she always did but that Roberto Cavalli dress was iconic) and as a result this moment will always stand out as a highlight in Aaliyah’s career💯
@@FedeRhodes💯She had 7 x years of original quality releases under her belt; no missteps, no corny chart chasing duets, just a steady succession of boundary pushing hits gifted w/ a natural commercial edge due to an innate understanding of both what was coming next in music and also a respect for who and what had made the generation that came before her so great. Her vocal performance style, her moves, charisma and rare beauty were simply her satisfying bonus gifts that kept on giving. Her taste level and vision were her main talents. Aaliyah had so much more to do and so much more room to grow and develop but the foundation had been set with intention. She had more than proven to her fans that all her audience needed to do was sit back and watch. She had it, she was delivering in real time and she seemed to have everything under control. That fateful plane crash took away a rare artist that had already proved she was destined for greatness🙌🏾
@@damyanthelion I have always been annoyed by Aaliyahs lack of Promotion. Thankfully she was just that Frickin good and would sell no matter what label push she got. her uncle was ALWAYS tight with that purse despite her being the bread winner of his label. The amount of Promo Brandy Got Aaliyah should of been getting the same. I feel like she would of won Grammys for both Are you that somebody and Try again had she performed them on the big stages. And I blame that on cheep ass Berry. And true she became busier in Hollywood but damn imagine if she would of performed those two songs on big stages?! She would of already blew to the mega spot and maybe she be here 😞. The more we learn the more we realize her death was avoidable. That man got off like a fat rat
#NEVERFORGET "TRY AGAIN" SPENT #1 ON BILLBOARD FOR 32 WEEKS SOLEY OFF AIR PLAY MAKING AALIYAH THE 1ST OVERALL ARTIST TO ACHIEVE THIS IN BILLBOARD HISTORY. THE PPL'S CHOICE 💯 AALIYAH WAS THE NEXT BIGGEST THING & QUEEN HER ORIGINALITY AND LEGACY LIVES ON 2 DECADES LATER AND HER TIMELESS BEAUTY AND BODY OF WORK IS A STAPLE IN FASHION & MUSIC👑🕊
Take notes people!! This was a defining moment in the history of MTV video music awards. A black woman defeating two of the biggest names in pop music at time, two women who happened to be Caucasians. That would have never happened during the 80s or early 90s. An award rightfully deserved to a woman who consistently displayed artistic creativity and innovation more so than any of the other nominees in this category. Rest in power Aaliyah! I often imagine where you would be in your career today, but I have no doubt that you would still be giving us cutting edge video and futuristic style, as you were never afraid to push the creative envelope, and gave other artists something to be inspired by. A star taken away from us far too soon!💔💔
Aaliyah will always be my favorite artist. She won among Britney Toni & Aguilera at that' time it means a lot. Just an amazing woman. Aaliyah was all the R&B music industry and much more... what a loss she is irreplaceable rest in heaven Queen Aaliyah you are truly deeply missed no words to describe how much I love you
Aaliyah’s hair *STAYED* laid!!!!!! I remember an interviewer on a news show (probably Good Morning, America) said she’s a sight for sore eyes 💗.... Gosh, she looked so radiant, graceful, & beautiful & Rashad looked just as handsome!! Sidenote: Aaliyah (pronounced: Ah-Lee-Yah)
“Some questions just answer themselves”... Aaliyah means “the highest, most exalted one, THE BEST”. BEST FEMALE VIDEO, basically Aaliyah already had that win in the bag. 😎
The awards were so fun to watch back then. I kind of lost Interest after 2014. Aaliyah will always be a gem in the music industry. I know everyone gets that thought that something is missing when you hear about Aaliyah. ❤️
RIP aaliyah. 19 yrs already😥 Rashad has this beautiful moment to always remember😍 AALIYAH used the 22 yrs she had on this earth to the fullest. That's all we can all hope to do.
2000s...what a time. I miss this era. When you heard Aaliyah drop a song. You automatically knew it was a banger. R.I.P Aaliyah we will always miss you❤
One of the sweetest most genuine authentic and humble to ever grace a stage hold a mic or make a video movie do an interview or accept an award Aaliyah Dana Haughton 💙👑👼🏽🦋
I love how close aaliyah and her brother are you can tell they are best friends and you can just see they was raised to share and he lost his best friend.xxxxxxxx
There is grace and respect coming from Aaliyah, which is pretty rare because looking at the music awards throughout each passing decade, a lot of female artists don't have that same energy, it got to the point where one ceremony is more chaotic than the previous, and that says a lot about the music industry.
..The Hair the dress the walk the speech!! everything on point! So happy she was seated such a distance from stage to that everyone could see her walk & shine! thats my homegirl my sista in my mind! I lover her & miss her so much! RIP Aaliyah all the way from South Africa
Damn.......talk about competition - I kept saying damn as each entry came up - what a category- what a time - every artist could have one that award- and that's real! Classics - damn I'm speechless - great videos

She was iconic. Yass. I wished I could have met her.
If you hadn't taken this plane of misfortune you would still be among us today, it's crazy how life is sometimes unfair.. it always saddens me so much yet I was very young at that time RIP Aaliyah
If Think about it . The white folks used Beyonce to get rid of Aaliyah because she already better than Britney spears and others So Beyonce was their secret weapon To take out aaliyah . So Beyonce could take all the fame. If u think about it Michael Jackson janet Jackson aaliyah they are the most used artist in music . Beyonce was jealous of aaliyah because she was a threat.
