AC Not Cooling Correctly

I am on a no cooling service call where the customer complains about an increase in the electric bill. I start testing the system and find the system pressures are low. Therefore I do a leak search and find out the evaporator coil is leaking. I then recharge the system to get it to operate until I can return with a new coil.

1980s - early 90s: Spend 2 grand or less on a condenser and air handler, electricity under 5 cents per kwh, unit lasts 30 years before springing a leak. only contactor and capacitors replaced. Dehumidified great with a standard psc blower set to high speed. 2016: Spend 10+ grand on a super-high seer proprietary system, electricity 15 to 20 cents per kwh. Needs low blower speed dehumidify feature to keep house comfortable because such a large evap coil is needed to get the SEER rating and it runs 45+ F sst instead of 35 to 40. Coil springs leak in 3 years, angry customer pays labor and refrigerant. A week after 10 year warranty ends, outdoor unit inverter circuit board goes bad, costs $1000 before markup. Unit not worth repair because all the other proprietary parts are ready to go. So much for progress.

More like 15k it’s why I keep my customers older units running until they start leaking or a major repair comes up
@albertastorms
@albertastorms 5 лет назад
This is why I will only install single stage and single speed hvac units in my house! The way we used to heat and cool for 60 years was fine, no need to have more than one stage of heating and cooling! If it is too expensive to pay bills, move to a new town and city where it is a lower cost of living!
@Jon-hx7pe
@Jon-hx7pe 5 лет назад
staging is for comfort. i think 2-stage heat (furnace) is worth it and the repair costs aren't much more than for single as long as it has a blower motor that can be replaced with a non-proprietary one (there are generic x13 replacements) and the inducer isn't ecm. The super high end variable capacity stuff looks like way more $$$$ to fix.
@thehvachacker
@thehvachacker 5 лет назад
Jon this is the high end variable capacity modulating compressors with condenser fan motors that modulate to liquid line temps. Lots of money to repair once the 10 year warranty is up.
@thehvachacker
@thehvachacker 5 лет назад
Mesedrew that’s why for my dad I installed a 14 seer 80% furnace. Parts are built to last and inexpensive to replace. I can easily swap any parts with after market instead of you supplier telling me the only communication board for my unit is in California and I live in Jersey

I wish this install was failed. I rather pull a coil. Instead of disconnecting a hung air handler, move it 2 feet, to be able pull the coil with almost no room to work

this is why i lean more towards food and beverage refrigeration more than anything. But even the superheat looks high for that kind of system and the suction line temp unless it wasn't running full throttle. Even pouring down rain subcool should be in range.
@thehvachacker
@thehvachacker 5 лет назад
I ran out of 410a. The subcooling should be closer in range with the rain. Yet with no more gas it’s where it stayed I got the system operating. I shifted the system into test mode which ramps the compressor to 100%. These systems can run 14-25 degree superheat and still produce a 20 degree split. I was nowhere near the 12 degrees of subcooling

Lennox units work great....When they have refrigerant in them. Which isn't very often. I wish I would have documented every leaking Lennox Coil I've found over the years. Although I did work on a Lennox xp17 yesterday, the one with the Emerson climate technologies compressor with the bell-shaped hard plastic cover over it, and it was fine. It's been in about eight or nine years now with no refrigerant added. But Lennox has definitely got some major coil issues.
@watermanone7567
@watermanone7567 5 лет назад
I agree, customers pay for the big name units with all the bells and whistles and usually the cheap units work just as well if not better. I had a customer that had a very old system that was working great and decided to replace it when they remodeled their house, bottom line is the new unit is nothing but trouble, guess what name it is? with leaking coils.
@codywiggins9387

They have improved quite considerably with their new evap and condenser coil design. Labeled as "Quantum Coils". We've seen much better success out of them.

Do you profile your systems or just use the Job Links as gauges? I really appreciate the time and effort you put into a service call. In todays world most companies want a tech to run 8-10 calls a day and it's hard for them to put the work in as you do...great job!!!

@@hozerhvac4406 yeah it is almost an every-week kind of thing with us. Haven't seen enough of the aluminum indoor calls to give an opinion on them. Although one of our guys has already found a leak on an aluminum. We're dealing with rain and Bosch equipment now and both have been pretty good so far. Lennox has cost homeowners and dealers millions of dollars with this leaky coil issue. that's always been my biggest gripe with this industry. There are no real standards or regulations to protect people against this kind of stuff.

Hey! I noticed you have one of those Mercedes vans. Any good? You had a ford transit before? Thoughts?
@thehvachacker
@thehvachacker 5 лет назад
It’s a good van doesn’t use much gas as the old Chevy vans 2500 with the nice v8 engines. Yet also lack in acceleration. That’s really not a bad thing carrying all this weight in the truck. I never had a transit yet my company has switched from the sprinters to the transits beginning of 2018. We have had all sort of problems with both. Yet we also have 50+ service vans on the road. I was the last sprinter upgrade. Trading in my 09 dodge sprinter for the 17 Mercedes sprinter. Same truck few dash changes and better turbo. The turbo use to always drop out of my old sprinter. No acceleration or power once that happens. Some of the transits have had transmission issues and engine failures. I would prefer keeping the sprinter cause the taller transit seems too tall. Plus I’m just use to the sprinter

That a-coil sucked to pull. when you see me leak searching there is a support beam going up to the roof rafters. Its supporting 5 different angles joining together. This prevented the coil from just sliding out. I wasn't going to cut it or move it out of the way. Attic was not even 3 foot tall. Had to move air handler 21 inches forward. Supply, and return needed to get disconnected and fitting into eve to disconnect ducts wasn't fun. The coil changeout took 9 hours 2 guys. I wrote it up for 2 small techs and they send me and another big guy to pull this off.

No I ordered a new one since i miss the convenience of having two probes. If I get the probe back then I have three. So then I can do suction line, liquid line and discharge line temp at the same time. Yet the customer never called me back and it’s been almost 2 weeks so I doubt they will. It’s a water sourced heat pump self contained in a closet. Not even an outdoor condenser or I would just go to the unit and get it back
