This video is about humidity issues compliant a customer gave me when I showed up to perform their ac maintenance. This is my companies first time performing maintenance. I run into many plugged up drains and one drain pan that was full and possible leaking into the building. Which are the area of wet ceiling tiles and higher humidity complaints? This is why ac maintenance is important to prevent issues

Do these traps provide any trapping at all, i.e. is water column high enough to prevent water from being pulled back by underpressure in the unit? I do not know this particular equipment and don't have time to check it, but by the look they are not proper traps.
@thehvachacker
@thehvachacker 4 года назад
Yes and that was the issue with the drain I redid. The top of the trap we put cleanout t. That has to be closed or the air gets sucked in the opening and holds the water back in pan causing it to overflow and leak inside. Once I opened the filter door this unit started draining

Those clogged drains happen, because in the United States, they do not usually give them a maintenance service every season, here in my country, we wash the air conditioners with water pressure. every summer, the minisplits, the splits, central equipment, even the window equipment.

Im not sure if it happens in hvac. But in trucks i have see plugged inlet are vents cause the drain to continuously draw in air and not let the water out. Removing the cause, usually gloves that get kicked under the passenger side dash, then its back to draining normal. Would a very dirty filter on a residential unit also cause this?
@thehvachacker
@thehvachacker 4 года назад
The trap is a vapor barrier. HVAC Why AC Sytems Have Condensate Traps ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6P-0Ix-bmdU.html. Check out the video it shows how the unit works with and without a trap, yet the evaporator and coil are on the negative side of the fan so water is held in by the fan without. Plugged filters won’t stop draining if a trap is in place. Yet will reke havoc to the system
@poellot
@poellot 4 года назад
@@thehvachacker oh ok, i wondered about that. On trucks the drain is just a hose hanging down, no trap, atleast not on peterbilt, international, or kenworth. When the filters on them plug it just reduces air flow, sometimes causes to freeze up if it is a dual system, but the restriction on the intake vent will cause not to drain, driver will say it works good for a few hours then quits. Turning off the fan causes a couple quarts to drain very fast.
@thehvachacker
@thehvachacker 4 года назад
When these filters get restricted the evals do freeze up from not enough air flow. The plugged intake on the trucks causes the fan to suck air in though the drain.
@poellot
@poellot 4 года назад
@@thehvachacker yeah. The trucks usually have a cycling compressor so freeze up would not be an issue if it was just a single unit, or if the bunk unit was off. But when the rear evaporator is getting enough air it can keep the low side pressure up just enough that the compressor will not cycle so the front with restriction will freeze up. Does not happen often but i have seen it a few times. Typical cycling compressor system would normally never do this, but on a dual evaporator truck , and i suppose a suburban or other suv with a rear evaporator could also.

Is that chary on the panel your wet bulb and dry bulb temp? Those 5 tons have alot of problems with cooling space, temps and belts usually are ok but you never know. 20* splits is on the edge of a little high. But I go 15-20 max. Indoor temp at 68 is good . Be safe HVAC ON AMERICA!!!

what keeps these traps from freezing in the winter?
@thehvachacker
@thehvachacker 4 года назад
They can freeze over the winter why the clear ezze traps are no good they always seem to crack and split. These schedule 40 pvc traps cause not too deep the water also can evaporate or if it freezes expand inside the pipe
@jrsmyth9761
@jrsmyth9761 4 года назад
There is a much easier way to make a proper trap. It is the correct depth, easy to clean and, if in a freezing climate, will not break/split in the winter.

Those hoods are not economies they are fixed shutters that allow fresh air . If fans run continuously they will bring in humid air when comp off. Also looks like someone changed belt and opened pull up to a just belt and reduced airflow causing low load and low superheat .If your going to use your probes to check settings you should make it run optimum.

Whoever installed my gas AC package unit must have been on crack. The unit is far too big for my house. Flex duct not sized right for the rooms and worst of all no return venting in any room. I just love listening to doors opened slightly ajar slam shut and air squeeze under the doors when the furnace turns on. Also that flex duct is just dangling from straps under the house with a lot of it drooping 5 to 8 inches. They routed a drain pipe from the kitchen sink over a duct causing the water to drain very slowly with the bad slope. There is 3 feet of blown insulation in the attic and I have no idea why they just didn't put the ducting up there instead of that freaking clusterfuck mess under the house. Not only with snaking the ducting around drain pipes and dangling from the joists but being tangle with romex wiring. Not to mention I really do not like the use of flex hose for natural gas outside when it is just hanging in the breeze getting knocked about when I mow my grass. My Lennox package unit is about the same size as those you are working on. 3 ton unit for a 939 square foot house and sounds like the damn space shuttle launching outside every time the furnace turns on. And they set it in the dirt instead of making a level base platform.

Where do you live? If you did the old timer rule of thumb alone every 500 sq feet would equal a ton of cooling. I’m guessing your house cools quickly yet humidity is an issue. Along with the noise
@jburr36
@jburr36 4 года назад
@@thehvachacker I live in southwest Idaho. I only use the furnace in the winter. I have never used the AC because even though it can get up to 107 F outside at times it cools down to 60 to 65 at night with 20- 25% humidity at the most. I get by using a small swamp cooler between 9 PM and 8 AM to cool the place down to 60 and it warms up to about 75 by 7 PM My Lennox unit is not very efficient with the way they have it set up and I just cannot justify using the kind of power it draws. Besides, my house being 95 years old it has absolutely no insulation inside the walls except for the 1 inch of styrofoam in the back of the siding I just had installed 4 months ago. The moron who renovated this house was a flipper. I was thinking about putting a 9 kW solar panel system on my roof and inspected the electrical sub panel and wiring. Found no less than 30 code violations and outright illegal as hell wiring. And the plumbing is no better. I relied on a professional home inspector's report before I bought this place. Never looked it over myself. Huge mistake. I'm saving up for some very major renovations and a new 2 ton gas split package is on my list. I got an estimate from a local HVAC guy for $7200. On the invoice he listed another package unit for $5600 but after some research I found out I can get the same unit for $2700. But can get a nice seer 14 gas split unit for less than $2000

Never trust a home inspector. Some are good others just failed at a trade so they took that on. Just gave one 500 on friday and he didn't even go into the lower attic where I found water staining on the wood and looked still damp under the roof. Wouldn't go into crawl space yet was suppose to test for termites and capenter ants. only caught the obvious. I did a home inspection myself before he got there. I just am not allowed to write up a report. what a waste of 500

@@thehvachacker That's just disgusting. I've been in this house for almost 8 years now. The inspector did list things the loan guarantee agency ( Federal Rural Development Agency) which mandated the seller fix before they would approve the loan. Double taps in the sub panel and what not. The realtor must have hired an unlicensed handyman to do the work because what he did was illegal ( moving the double tap to a splice inside the sub panel, using green wires and black wires for the neutral lines, miss matched breakers for the subpanel, plus about 20 other things Just for shits and giggles I went to the county building and zoning to get a record of all the permits issued to this place. 2 - Mine for the fencing I built. I called the state for any electrical, plumbing, and HVAC. One for the HVAC but this thing was obviously not inspected when completed. All the plumbing, extra electrical outlets were done illegally. This was never brought up at closing and I trusted the real estate agents, title company, inspectors, etc and just lived here for 8 years. I went under my house for the 1st time 2 days ago and that's when I discovered with an absolute horrid tangled mess of wiring, plumbing, and HVAC ductwork this place has. Also found out that the ledger boards and floor joist in a corner of my house is gone - rotted away. Most of the original floor joists are destroyed by insects and someone installed new joists next to them but they are barely in place. There is a concrete foundation which runs down the center of my house and one end of it just crumbled away. a 2 x 8 support is rotted away and someone stuffed bits and pieces of a 2 x 4 in there to hold up the wall above it. much of the subfloor is rotted out I need to completely remove and replace all the floor and subfloor and every floor joist in my house and use a concrete saw to cut out that bad section of the inner foundation and rebuild it. It will be a few years before I can save up and do this. But yeah, it is really going to be tough to trust professionals I hire now. I've never posted any videos but I should make some showing what a freaking mess this place is and the work of these so called professionals. LOL! I have a 12 inch flex duct going into a 8 x 10 room and very little air can return from that room with the door closed. The return for my unit is 18 inches.

You continue to amaze my friend lol. 5 minutes into the video multiple unorthodox methods. Using a zip tie to see if a trap is clear? Unscrew the trap and use your hose to clean the trap. Obviously you will have a hose to clean the coils. Then use condensate pan treatment tabs. What does the drain have to do with the humidity any way? I hope you didnt put that filter media in those units....unbelievable...who uses rolled filter media and cuts it to size in an RTU. Ive seen enough here.
@thehvachacker
@thehvachacker 4 года назад
Those filters don’t come from a roll. A zip tie is the perfect drain cleaning tool. And a plugged drain leaks water inside. Which leads to humidity issues.

@@josepulido7424 That code doesn't make a lot of sense to me - unless they are somehow able to make rainfall land on just the gutters or scuppers, water is falling on the roof surfaces around those machines. But, the AHJ gets that final word.
@thehvachacker
@thehvachacker 4 года назад
jose pulido in Jersey there is no code for roof drains, this is all that gets done usually. The roof is waterproof. I just don't like the water pooling against the curb. After enough time water will work its way in. Just remember as your watching vids online code is different everywhere. You don't want much piping on the drains in jersey cause most mid December to march we can be low teens 10-25 degrees. I think needing to pipe the condensation off the roof is ridiculous to be mandatory yet local codes is what we all have to abide by. Or fail inspection. Many comment how some stuff is not to code in my vids yet I do everything to my local municipal codes. They will change from one town to another.
@thehvachacker
@thehvachacker 4 года назад
Dwight Rahl we can't fight the municipal codes just do everything to code, yet in some towns condensation isn't allowed to be drained into a slop sink.
