Add a Form Tool to the Tool Database - Part 37 - Aspire and VCarve For Absolute Beginners
More down here ↓↓↓ Click SHOW MORE!
This is the 37th in a series of videos geared toward the person who has never worked with CAD or CAM in the Vectric Software before.
In this video, I’ll show you how to add a Form Tool to the Tool Database in Cut2D, VCarve Desktop, VCarve Pro, and Aspire using a DXF file of the Tool Profile.
In previous videos, I’ve shown you how to enter tools into the Tool Database using .TOOL files, and by copying a tool that’s already there.
In this video, I’ll show you how I download a profile of a ¼ inch radius round over bit in DXF format, import it into Aspire, then use it to enter the info into the Tool Database. We’ll get into editing the DXF file, and selecting which parts of the file we’ll need. We’ll then go into the Database and get the info entered, then saved in the proper category. I’ll then show you some ways to incorporate the Point Cutting Round Over Bit into your projects, and some things to look out for along the way.
As usual, if you have any comments or questions about anything I covered in this video, please put ‘em in the comment section below.
On Sunday, November 26th, I’ll be hosting LIVE Q&A session #23, where you can ask your questions pertaining to anything I covered in this video. That Q&A starts at 3 pm Eastern time, Noon Pacific time. Hope to see you there!

Hey Mark, Just had to tell you how much I am enjoying these videos. So much great information presented clearly and slowly. I was kinda dreading learning another piece of software but your videos have made learning the Vetric software a pleasure. The practical experience you bring to the table is just priceless. Thanks so much. Again great job!

Hi Mark, I have made a royal mess of my tool database. I have tried looking online to see how to restore the original list of tools, but every place I look, the explanations are as clear as mud. Would you mind telling me, in your great way of explaining things, how to do that? I would REALLY appreciate it! I just joined your channel and I'm looking forward to getting the help I need to move forward with my CNC projects. I have to admit, it's been pretty frustrating.
@fournierluc2205

Great video as usual Mark, you do not mention what to do when you do not have a profile and you warn against using one from another bit but wouldn't it be better to start with an imported profile and modify it to represent the dimensions you measure instead of starting from scratch? This is similar to entering the other bit information where you copy an existing tool then modify the parameters. I guess I will have to try some profile bits in upcoming projects. I can see using a roundover bit on raised text to soften the edges.
@MarkLindsayCNC
@MarkLindsayCNC 4 года назад
Thank you for checking out the video! It is similar to using a different tool's .tool file, but it's just dissimilar enough to matter. The profile vector made for a specific bit is made to match the curves, angles, and measurements of that bit. A different bit may have different measurements, angles, radii, or curve lengths. While that may not seem important at first, it may mean the difference between a profile that fits a project's edge and a profile that blows through the side wall of a pocket or hole. You could try starting with a different bit profile vector and modify it in Node Editing mode, but you could drive yourself nuts making small changes here and there in order to get it to match the bit you have. In the long run, it's better to just get a bit that has a profile vector available from the manufacturer. Still, I know that some folks just won't do that, no matter what anyone suggests. In Live Q&A #23, which followed this video, I addressed the scenario where you don't have a profile vector for a bit, and I said I would do a video on what to do to get a profile vector for a bit that doesn't have one available online (basically hand tracing the profile onto paper, scan it into the computer, and do a bitmap trace.) I won't be able to do that video for a couple of weeks, but I will get to it. Thanks again for watching!

Hi Mark Love your Videos. I am using this to import the Amana 56123 .25 round over point bit I see in the Amana specs that the point is actually .028 and it is also .500 total diameter when i selected the vectors and imported I first had to remove the "bottom" flat otherwise the tool DB complained also the Tool DB shows this as .4606 diameter BTW I am using vectric 11.5 I'm a bit confused??? EDIT - lol, and as soon as I posted that I made it work (selected the vector alone, cut it, joined them, done) Hey Martk - great video as usual, but I do wish you'd have demonstrated using the Amana roundover - that vector is made of 7 pieces, and I have not for the life of me been able to figure out how to join/delete the pieces such that I get the required "half image" vector of the bit profile.... That bit has a "flat" nose, not a point, and the "nose" is a single vector itself....

Vectric software won't let you enter a bit that makes an undercut. I did a video on it, here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SblFFBq2bxo.html

The good folks at Freud Tools sent me a DFX file for a flat bottom V bit point Freud 20-174 when I import the vector into V-Carve the tool diameter is 28.57 inches and V carve won't let me change that. Any suggestions ?

I've run into this before - it's pretty common. The DXF file was drawn in Metric units. That's easy to fix. You'll need to delete that tool in the database and start over. Here's a short video I did on converting Metric vectors to Imperial, or Imperial vectors to Metric: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KE4kxHxE95g.html

Hi Mark, I have tried to go to the Legacy site to download the profile DXF, but they are re-doing their website, any chance you add a link to the file you have please 😁 as I want to start adding Form tools to my library, Thanks
@MarkLindsayCNC
@MarkLindsayCNC 2 года назад
I'm sorry, Warren, but I don't. My only source for that DXF is/was the Legacy website. I downloaded that DXF 2 computers ago, and never went back to get it again, as I haven't yet needed it. Looks like we'll both have to wait for Legacy to get their website back up and running.

Trying to Draw the CMT 955.601 Not having luck. tested the ones you show here and they worked fine. Any ideas?
@MarkLindsayCNC
@MarkLindsayCNC 3 года назад
I had to look up the bit to see what the problem might be and found it immediately. That bit creates an undercut. Vectric software currently won't display an undercut, so it won't allow you to add any tool geometry that creates an undercut. That's why you can't enter the geometry of a Dovetail bit, Keyhole bit, etc. It's a problem they've had since the beginning, and they're working on it. I don't completely understand it myself - something to do with the way the program calculates which pixels are removed for display purposes or something like that. But do know they're working on it.

I love your videos...I really do...but only when I have alot of time. I would suggest maybe trying to make some "shorts"...say 10 minutes or less. I often see your videos in the search but don't always click and watch due to the length. Just trying to help...not trying to be rude. I think you would get a lot more views if the videos were shorter in nature or split up into 2 or 3 shorter videos with a subject matter covered in each. People are doing a search...and then comparing a 5 minute video versus a 38 minute video to get the answer.
@MarkLindsayCNC
@MarkLindsayCNC 10 месяцев назад
Thanks very much, Garry. I tried doing shorter videos 5 or 6 years ago, and folks didn't like it. I was told I was going too fast for them to follow, or that folks didn't understand why I did something one way and not another. Doing a series of videos was also a failure. Folks want to click one time and get the info they're looking for in a single video. I ran several polls, and asked for feedback on several of my weekly Live Q&As, and the result was that folks want me to keep doing it the way I do it. I not only explain how to do something, I explain why it's done that way (something a lot of people don't do,) and I gear it toward the person who has never done anything like this before. So for the foreseeable future, I'm going to keep doing these videos the way I have done them in the past. Thank you again!

Goes to show that there is always a reason to the madnesss. Many things that people suggest I do for my own business, unrelated to woodworking, I have already tried and a gazillion others as well and don't use them for one reason or another that has resulted in them not working. Thanks for the reply and still always appreciate the effort on your end@@MarkLindsayCNC
