Original video description:
Grade 6 ADI Trainer, Ged Wilmot, gives a demonstration of how to conduct a Part 3, Phase 2 session on Approaching Junctions to Turn Left & Right. Claire Wilmot portrays the learner driver. Traditional instruction is predominantly used throughout, which is currently the preferred style for the Part 3 examination. More 'pure' coaching videos will be made available at a later date for ADI's wishing to provide a more natural, client-centred style of learning.

Watching this clip brings back the memory of my Part3. I had TIR and Junctions left and right. My heart was pounding in my chest then and again just watching this clip.....it is very authentic.

Congratulations Peter - great advice about the life lines. Most examiners are very generous with them, but if misread by the PDI they can seriously backfire! One amusing experience I observed from one of my trainees was on Phase 2 - she was over-instructing, so the examiner commented "you do a lot of talking don't you? My other instructor doesn't help me as much as this". She totally misread the hint and replied, "oh, thanks very much!" and continued to over-instruct. Doh! :-O

@ThirdEyeOpen84 Thanks for your comments! Yes - well spotted with the name! I have put an annotation on the video to such effect. Although the examiner will use a different name for Phase 2, it's important to remember that the name you use really doesn't matter, so long as you realise that you are working with a completely different pupil, and one at a completely different stage of learning than in Phase 1. Best of luck with your Part 3 - please get in touch if you have any questions! :-)

@ismaillea Haha thanks! Not that young really, although I did qualify in my early 20's :-) Glad you are finding the videos helpful - more will be available very soon on our website.

Yes, any questions such as those are fine - just make sure they're nice and thought-provoking (like the ones you suggested). Some trainers regard questionning at the start of the phase as futile, because the 'pupil' generally answers them all correctly anyway and still goes on to make the mistakes regardless. However, I think asking a few pertinent questions is important - after all, we would check the knowledge of a 'real' pupil the first time we meet, wouldn't we? :-)

@ismaillea Don't concern yourself too much with giving a 'perfect' briefing - it's one of the least important components, as long as you cover the main points during the lesson itself. In relation to mirrors, work hard to pre-empt faults with questions and ensure the 'pupil' has a thorough understanding of when and why they need to be used. On the Emergency Stop, watch carefully to spot all the faults (look at the PUPIL as you give the signal to stop, not the road). Video on our website :-)

Love your videos and they helped me on my part 3 a few years back thanks. 1st gear corners can often be too tight for the clutch to be up, (ie the car needs to be slower that first gear will allow) as it can pull the car around the corner. On a tight street turning, unless clutch is down or slipped your control is compromised. Your thoughts?

I understand the dilema, on my Part 3, the examiner suggested, quite stongly, that the left shoulder blind spot check was overkill. Was I confused? you bet!. Always teach it though.

Hi Bryan, thanks for your question! In other words, your trainer is telling you that drivers don't have a left blind spot??! How very puzzling :-\ I don't believe that ANY observation could be referred to as 'redundant' - surely it is better to consider any activity in driveways/openings/doorways/alleyways over the left shoulder than just to ignore it and hope for the best? My advice would be to acknowledge your trainer's difference of opinion, but go with what feels right for YOU ;-)

@ServeAllah We are in the process of producing a commercial package which would demonstrate the skills you are looking for, but we don't anticipate these being freely available on RU-vid at this time. If you need any help or advice on these though, please get in touch by phone and we will do our best to help :-)

If I'm honest, for many ADI Trainers this is completely normal. However, I don't believe that it's helpful or motivational to act in such a way, especially in the early stages of training. Claire and I would usually introduce more 'difficult' roles only once a PDI has grown in confidence and has developed strategies for coping with such situations (following our demonstration). Over the years, most DSA examiners have dropped the 'pupil from hell' role play, as they recognise that...

Lol just a small thing that made me chuckle at the start Clare says that she has gone now and that you can call her Louise, yet when you go in role you call her Clare again must be hard to call your wife by a different name :-) Great videos though really been a big help so far
@GedWilmot
@GedWilmot 10 лет назад
Yes I know! I only noticed it after uploading (hence the annotation to explain that it won't matter if you call the examiner by a different name). Ah well - just goes to prove we're not perfect! :D

Ged Wilmot Hi Ged would just like to thank you and Clare for all the help your clips provided in helping me pass my part 3 at the first go passed with a 5/4, i pretty much adopted a lot of your style of teaching so thanks once again and i hope you continue to provide help for others :-)

...it is unnecessary in assessing whether a PDI can teach. Pupils 'from hell' are few and far between - if you do your job correctly and establish rapport from the start, you will quickly gain their respect. There is always the exception, of course! My recommendation would be for you to speak to your trainer about how you are feeling and if he is as good as others say, he should welcome your feedback and hopefully build your confidence first before building in more 'difficult' scenarios :-)
