I'm still not totally feeling Christmas Island, but there is definitely some shit on it I deeply love. Like "Angel of Death", "Temple Grandin", "Children of God," and "Do, Re, and Me." Still haven't checked out Bible 2, but I'm about to. I really liked "Goodbye, Oh Goodbye".

Boo. I love The Bible 2. It's beautiful. It shows so much about the growth of Sean as a person. It doesnt sound very much like NMH...AJJ has been my favorite band for many years and changing along with them has been fun...and I think bands are allowed to change and experiment however they want. Wouldnt it be boring if they made the same album over and over again?

Of course bands are allowed to change, but in this case most people (myself included) seem to feel they are changing for the worse.

"I think bands are allowed to change and experiment however they want. Wouldnt it be boring if they made the same album over and over again?" I totally agree, and yes. You're not wrong for liking their new stuff, it's not objectively bad, and I'm not wrong for not liking it. Unfortunately, a lot of old AJJ fans, me included, don't like the new direction they've taken. Just because I'm a genuinely huge fan of multiple AJJ albums doesn't make me obligated to keep liking everything they make. I don't fault AJJ for experimenting and changing it up, but their new sound isn't for me. Side note: the changing their name was also kind of a turnoff, and I'm glad Can'thony Maintaino agreed
@sunnybubbleday
@sunnybubbleday 8 лет назад
+outshimed I seem to have found a correlation between AJJ fans who like the new album and those who don't... Everyone who has said they don't like the new album doesn't like the name change either and everyone who's said they liked the new album has supported the name change.
@outshimed
@outshimed 8 лет назад
That's interesting, and I'm not really surprised. They'll always be Andrew Jackson Jihad to me, because that's what they were for the five years I knew them before they decided to change it up.

I wasn't that happy with Christmas Island when it first came out either, but after a while i started loving it and now i can't live without some of the tracks. Coffin Dance & Linda Ronstadt are some of AJJ's greatest songs ever. I haven't started liking the new album yet, but i hope i will some day.

This is my favorite album partially BECAUSE of the way so many songs are distorted in certain ways. It definitely is an acquired taste thing but I think it really adds thematically to the songs it was chosen for.

19peter96 agreed. Cant top the climax of Big Bird. But he also probably was aware that he was going a similar route as that song. I dont mind the fake out climax. But it doesn't flow into when I'm a Dead Boy. Which is my second favorite song. Shoulda climaxed and then declined.

i thought this album was pretty good, i thought you would've enjoyed the guitar parts on golden eagle and perhaps cody's theme. didn't get a neutral milk hotel-copy vibe from this album whatsoever thought. perhaps with the lofi production was a bit too much, but taking it regardless of their previous work i think would make it a bit better. the emotion on no more shame, no more fear, no more dread is so avid and unplaceable, but in a wonderful way; it leaves you feeling introspective and off, and you don't know why. these past two AJJ albums have been a complete stylistic shift but not necessarily in a bad way. american garbage is a wonderfully catchy track that has such abstract lyrics that they kind of undo the poppy instrumentation, while still working with it. this album feels like a large set of wonderful contradictions, with the off-kilter/off-the-cuff singing mixed with the arranged sections play wonderfully off of each other, making for a moody abstract folk song.

Hello friend, fancy meeting you here. I personally loved Christmas Island. It might even be one of my favorite AJJ records, if not then is my favorite. That being said, The Bible 2 definitely isn't their best work, but it still offers a lot that may take a few listens to really appreciate. I honestly like it when bands change their sound, of course it depends though. The bible 2 is definitely at the bottom of favorites, but I still thoroughly enjoy it for various reasons.
@astridweatherfield4840
@astridweatherfield4840 8 лет назад
Alec Jacobs Hey there friend, yeah I agree with you; I didn't mean that The Bible 2 was their best at all (fuck with knife man and people who can eat people the most), it just wasn't anything near bad. And yeah, this is definitely at the bottom (snugs right next to can't maintain and candy cigarettes with me) of their discography in terms of quality, but it's extremely consistent and the concepts running throughout are amazing. And I really didn't know what to think about Junkie Church at first, but yeah, like you said, it all takes a minute. I loved Goodbye at first listen, along with most of the other tracks. But looking at it in their discography, it is like 3rd from the bottom. To be more specific: People Who Can Eat People Knife Man Rompilation (not really an album though) Christmas Island The Bible 2 Can't Maintain Candy Cigarettes and Cap Guns (I know it's satire, and it has its place, but like comparing it to everything else, it just doesn't come close. There's a few good tracks on there, like Dylan Cook's Theme Song, God Made Dirt, and Fuck White People)

I think the Bible 2 is a record that you don’t like the first time you hear it, because it’s different from anything else the band has put out, but the record grows on you, and you see that the album isn’t a divergent from the bands sounds, but is the full evolution of their music. This review came out 2 years ago, and the record was rated very poorly at the time, but now many more people appreciate the album a lot more then they did before. So I think this guy should look at the album again

I actually really like this album, but I'm not sure if it's in spite or in light of the odd recording choices. While I did have the same problems you did with My Brain is a Human Body, I felt that, lyrically and tonally at least, the rest of the album was able to hold it's own and stay a solid listen. I feel that the muddiness and distortion may have been done to add to the narrative of a man needing closure and being unsure of things, and when that closure hits, the distortion seems to disappear, then build back up, almost as if a metaphor for him making peace and accepting his demons. I might be looking into it too much, idk. I'm excited to see them live, and something tells me that these new songs will be a much better experience live than on album.

Loved this album. I had never listened to this band until I saw them at a small festival in Cincinnati and was blown away. I then listened to this album and thought it was amazing. I think a lot of the times we get used to a band sounding a certain way with a certain kind of production and whenever they change course because they're bored (what other reason is there?) we get kinda mad at them and give them light 5's. Hope it grows on ya madthony slambando.

the magic is gone. Knife Man was and still is a monumental album to me, a very important part of the ladder part of my formative years as far as musical taste goes. I'll say I never had any faith in the first place, even back when it came out, that they could ever hope to match it again. so I can't say I can't say I'm to disappointed, as I never had any expectations. but it is interesting this seemingly magical thing that happens from time to time, when a band comes from seemingly nowhere and breaks out these master pieces (or close to). how can they speak to me on such a level that reaches for the essence of my humanity, but then, same band, only few years later, their work feel so devoid of any vision? (it's a hu-uge bummer.)

I liked it. You're under no obligation, but I'd honestly suggest giving it a couple more listens, and maybe read along with the lyrics. You start to notice specific images that tie across several of the songs, that tie them together as more of a cohesive and singular thought, like recurring images involving human bodies becoming larger structures, which appears in Junkie Church, Terrifyer, and Small Red Boy. Also, I'm honestly fine with/ on board with the production quirks, like the lo-fi 90s references, the synthpop and kind of muffled qualities of the sound. I look at those as being intentional elements of the work as a whole. The album is, ostensibly, about Sean's relationship with his childhood self, and those sonic textures play to music that have a distinctly nostalgic feel to them. I think the work is more rewarding and has a pretty singular feeling to it, once you get past its eccentricities and how much of a departure it is from their previous sound. That's my opinion though.

I feel like you want them to stay a 19 year old skate punk band and they’re literally like 40? Late 30s now? They have had 10-15 years of new experiences and growth and if you are a fan of them you follow along with their journey through every album. You don’t have to love every song or think it needs to be some cohesive concept album that they’ve never tried to do. it’s fun music. Just listen and enjoy. You don’t have to critique it to death and hold them to an impossible standard that has never been their goal as a band.

I agree with Anthony about the album's narrative not being as concrete or cohesive since the lyrical themes aren't tied together with any deliberate intention through the arrangement. but, with that being said, I still love this album. I understand the classic ajj fans having issues with the new sound the band has been moving towards, but this is to be expect as a band evolves. especially one that has had so many random line up changes. for the longest time all the songs were written by just Sean and Ben, but now the official line up collaborates on the writing too.

I really liked bible 2 because they tried to get into a different sound than usual. I love their old stuff and im a little sad that they changed it so much in the bible 2. still I loved it so much

As much as I like the raw acoustic recordings on most of their records the Bible 2’s production grew on me pretty quickly with songs like Terrifyer or Cody’s Theme it fits well with the aesthetic

I came to terms with the changes on Christmas Island, so I'm not as disappointed. That said, I have similar feelings about tracks like Cody's Theme, Golden Eagle, My Brain Is A Human Body, and White Worms. There's certainly potential but the production kind of ruins those tracks. I do like the combination of No More Shame, No More Fear, No More Dread and Goodbye, Oh Goodbye; unfortunately there's a bit of a gulf between those and Terrifyer/Small Red Boy/When I'm A Dead Boy. Still hoping for an album version of #Armageddon.

i listened to my brain is a human body for the first time in a couple years the other day and now it's my favourite ajj song, idk why it's so unpopular. this album gets better every time i listen to it.

Hm, i really loved this album actually :) But i feel like it might be because i have a tendency to consume music without much thought since i don't know much about the art form at all.
