What makes this more hilarious is that if you understand the lore of this game and other Remedy games, you can tell Dunkey actually understand what's going on
@@sttate I watched the "Sam Lake Explains Alan Wake" video on IGN and it caught me up enough that I don't feel like I'm missing anything crucial in Alan Wake II
@@sttateyes and no. You can understand Alan Wake perfectly fine in and of itself. Control provides a metaverse where Alan Wake is one small crisis of many, and if you play control you'll come away with a broader understanding. Also control is a really good game.
As a Finnish man myself, mad respects for pretty much nailing the pronounciation of Ilkka's name. Also fun fact about Sam Lake. His real name is Sami Järvi. Järvi literally means "Lake" in finnish, so he just literally translated his name for you to make it easier to pronounce lmao
As a half swedish/half finnish man I often find myself pondering how much of "Sam Lake" is actually in this story. It's fascinating. Feckin' Finns ey, what an original piece of art.
I'm calling it now, when dunkey does his Games of the year video, he's going to end it with "actually the best game of the year is playing peekaboo with my baby"
If this game reminds you of acid, I'm concerned that what you've taken was not in fact acid, but instead DPH, Datura, K2, 25i-NBOMe, or all of the above. The writing, man... I've never been more disappointed by a sequel to one of my favorite games. There is so much ludonarrative dissonance that I kept making the not-good stank face every few minutes. I mean, I'm not gonna type out an essay breaking it all down (because I'd have to type A LOT just to get a solid chunk of my criticisms down but I don't feel like it's worth the effort), but even just the fact that towards the beginning, people start dying due to unexplainable phenomena, you're playing as an FBI agent, and yet she's all like "wow, this case is really exciting!" and cracking jokes (plus all the so-called "millenial writing" tropes all over the place) evokes the kind of tonal whiplash that you'd see in the average phase 4 or 5 MCU film. When Nightingale's corpse attacks and that fight ends, the cops are the only ones in the room that are potential suspects for the killed cops (which NOBODY acknowledges, let alone with the seriousness appropriate for the circumstances, but whatever I guess lmao), plus the other guys even said they heard gunshots, yet absolutely no comment about it when they see dead cops... My God man, it hurts. There were a lot of really good ideas here and some cool sensory fuckery, so it's a real shame that the execution is so lacking. ... I'm just realizing I should probably delete this comment at some point because most of the discourse around this game seems to be giving it unbridled praise, and I know how some people get when they hear criticism for a piece of media they love on the internet. I'm not attacking anybody, I'm criticizing a piece of media (which by the way, I'll repeat, is part of a franchise I have loved since when I first played the first game).
@@mikeexitscome on, nobody’s gonna attack you for making a good point, but it’s also really subjective, dialogues feels real and it’s all that matters, and it’s explained why Saga and Alex makes jokes or are excited, they’ve seen a lot and bright falls saw more stranger things than the feds. I think that’s just one way to look at the game, and there’s no wrong or right when nitpicking details
How do you have ludonarritive dissonance? You're killing monsters through the whole thing there shouldn't be remorse for killing ghosts and killer cult members
@@GTA6ReleasesDec2024 I don't think bear and vampire sex games are "childish". But still, Alan wake 2's creativity was on a next level, it should've won.
This is why I play video games. It looks completely coocoo-crazy and like the developers actually had a lot of fun making it. Especially the dancing part
@@vanci3449 how? theres like two light puzzles i can remember that were dumb and frustrating, but the rest of the gameplay is great and a substantial improvement over the first the only thing i can think of is the difficulty being a little unbalanced, but the solution to that is just lowering the difficulty
Hey Dunkey, I just wanted to tell you that whenever I am feeling a little bit down, I can always count on watching your videos to cheer me up. Been watching your videos for at least 5 years, and they are always great. I wish you and Leah only the best. Please never stop making videos!!!
I am here comfort-watching in crippling dental pain. Videos right in the sweet spot of need to concentrate for great insights and get relief with rewarding nonsense. What a gift 👌
I'm really glad that Mr. Wake is awake in this Alan Wake game. I didn't partake in the 1st Wake game because I was too busy playing Quake + watching Dunkey put a rake in the lake, but it's nice to see that Mr. Wake ended his break and his vision is no longer opaque.
A break from Quake for Wake's sake is no mistake! Watching Wake undertake is a piece of cake. Let's not forsake Wake, as a lot is at stake. In this new take, watching Wake take on the lake makes no quake or shake~
And this is exactly why Alan Wake 2 is one of the greatest games ever made. The about of meta references that are logically intertwined into the story is just insane. Never played a better written game in my life.
@@WettyandDryUnfortunate that so many creative teams even just in gaming don't ever get to feel like that. We'd doubtless get better games overall if they did as opposed to having crappy workplaces.
I'm not sure if games are getting weirder or if Dunkey is getting better at editing, because I can never tell which parts are "jokes" edited in, and which parts are actual gameplay 💀
@@nbbear55I just finished the game, it was that good like it feels like it makes no sense, then it all makes a little sense, but as soon as it starts making sense someone comes in, fucks it all up and then nothing makes any sense anymore 10/10 GOTY
It’s cool but sometimes it gets me mad that people don’t take other games seriously. Weird dialogue in their games gets analyzed, but in other games is brushed aside as bad. There’s plenty of cool games in the past and currently that deserve to be treated like Remedy games but because they don’t have the huge budget and polish they get written off
@@serluc5038 a big recent one for me is Wanted:Dead. It's a fun action game with a story that deals with AI. It talks about how our attachments to other people differentiate us from AI, the main character has a nice subtle arc of learning to appreciate her humanity, and it has a bit of fun corporate satire as well. This went over the heads of pretty much every reviewer, I think because they saw weird dialogue and performances in the first cutscenes and just wrote it off as bad and not worth engaging with. If the game had a reputable developer (and time in the oven, its obviously rushed/compromised) you would probably be hearing reviews say the story was pretty good.
@@dudestep from what i can see on a quick browse through steam reviews, it seems most negative comments are in regards to the janky/buggy gameplay, and in fact most positive reviews highlight the dialogue. Although steam is by no means a standard for estimating discourse, in this case it seems pretty fair. But hey man, indie games often need just one person to pick it up and talk about it, and if you feel like you have something important to say, you should write/talk about it! I'd be happy to check it out if you do, the game seems interesting enough!
@@dudestepSooo glad someone mentioned this, it's so disgustingly common that bad writing gets brushed aside purely because it comes from a reputable franchise.
I did not expect that perfect transition to The Poet and the Muse at the end. I went from laughing at the funny video to being hit with a wave of emotion.
i just got to the "champion of light" part in the game and woohoo mama that shit is DOPE. definitely something that is best going into unspoiled because it just comes out of the blue, especially if you play a chapter of Saga's first beforehand. Truly an experience raising the bar for video game entertainment everywhere.
I can also strongly recommend switching characters whenever you have the chance. I played a bit too long as Saga, which meant when I hit the "point of no return" of her story I then had several hours left to play as Alan Wake before finally being able to continue both stories. Keep switching, keep playing, the game will flow better that way.
Sometimes I understand how Dunkey feels about a game after watching his review, sometimes I don't but at least I learnt a few things about the game. And then there's this shit.
I think unless Dunkey really likes or really hates a game, the videos he makes aren't supposed to be real reviews, but rather parodies of review videos. So I don't think it really matters if he likes Alan Wake II or not.
I am more confused than I was when I started watching this video, but also much, much more amused. Overall, I'd give it a wake out of ten, very energizing, woke me right the hell up yesterday morning.
Gotta hand it to Remedy: They know how to pull off the supernatural by presenting it in the most coolest, confusing, batshit insane way that you can never predict
@@kingsharpie420the story is not that confusing They even told it in the most obvious way possible Never play the first game? Its OK the musical told the entire story for you
Man there are lots of moments of Control's elements in there. The studio is amazing. Loved Control and you're right sometimes I get lost in the giant map, graphics ohhh so juicy.
All memes aside, this is one of the best games to come out this year. As a "survival horror" game it has genuinely scary sequences in it and yet somehow they managed to put in a musical number and make it one of the best experiences I've had in gaming. 10/10
The horror was putting sticky notes on a cork board. It killed the pacing. Saga was boring trash. The “gameplay” was mostly walking around picking up nonsense to pad out the length. This was my biggest disappointment of 2023.
The bulletin board gameplay was so boring and handholdy. Other than that this game tries so hard to be fun and quirky that they actually forgot to make interesting gameplay.
@@unleashedbread6146 You know you didn't have to actually use the board except in very rare cases, right? It just helps you if you're stuck in the main story.
Man, I hope I get to enjoy Alan Wake 2 as much as you seemed to have enjoyed when I finally get around to playing it. When was the last time we had a notable, mind-bending psychological horror game? Silent Hill 2? 3? 4?
It's the mark of a true genius that Dunkey can make a 4 minute video that is 100% entertaining yet gives me zero clue what he thinks about the game. Then again, I was transfixed for all 20 minutes of Yötön yö, yet I had no earthly idea what I was watching. Guess I'm just not smart enough for Dunkey Wake 2: Sam Ocean's Spiral.
"Wait up yall. I need to concentrate. Ok Wake is awake and he has to fight the evil wake, "Mr. Scratch" otherwise known as Alan Sleep. But he doesn't care, cuz Alan Wake can kill a Bulldozer with a flashlight! Warlin Door is over there, you think he's nice, but he is mean! He has to interview Wake because Alan Wake is a famous Writer portrayed by the Finnish Actor Ilkka Villi in the live-action segments but voiced by the american actor: Matthew, who is also Dr. Casper in their last game "Control" which had an Alan Wake DLC. In the game his novels are based on a Max Payne-like character called "Alex Casey" who looks like the real-life writer of the game Sam Lake who appears as himself in Alan Wake 1 AND also looks like Max Payne from the game Max Payne 2, and Alex Casey in Alan Wake 2 and both characters by James Gunn, but it isnt really Max Payne because that ip is owned by Rockstar Games. Now, because it is written by Sam Lake Alan Wake is trapped in an Evil Lake called the Dark Place which is just New York. You also play as a new protagonist called "Saga Anderson" who teams up with an FBI agent called Alex Casey who looks identical to the Actor who portrays Alex Casey in the movies based on Alan Wake's books, and hes also a detective voiced by James Gunn but its just a coincidence. Saga has psychic abilities and her daughter drowned because so did Alan Wakes wife because he (Alan) is a reincarnation of the writer Thomas Zane who's wife drowned. but whats fucked up is that Alan Wake no longer has access to brand-name batteries. Remember how Max Payne was like a comic book but then it had a TV Show in the game, Alan Wake 2 is the pinnacle of this, in the first game you watched commercials for Verizon Wireless but in Alan Wake 2 you watch commercials about this kinda stuff: (Oh shit this coffee is shit). AND you can go into the Movie Theatre Level and watch an entire movie Directed by Thomas Zane father of Max Zane, top THAT you fucking stupid game Kart-Field. Whats the best part of Alan Lake is the music, because the lyrics are so real to reality. For this whole game I never knew where to go and then the song came on and went: 𝅘𝅥𝅮 I lost my wayayay, lost my waayayay. 𝅘𝅥𝅮. Now this Video is over but we still have to talk about the- one more part of the game where they go "Show me the Champion Of Light" you know what I'm talking about. (Ingame) "Hmm Mmm Hmm Champion Of Light" This guys KNOWS what I'm talking about "I give you da harold of darkness". 𝅘𝅥𝅮 SHOW ME THE CHAMPION OF LIGHT 𝅘𝅥𝅮 𝅘𝅥𝅮 I'LL SHOW YOU THE HERALD OF DARKNESS 𝅘𝅥𝅮 𝅘𝅥𝅮 LOST IN A NEVER-ENDING NIGHT 𝅘𝅥𝅮 Alan Wake 2 is a Psychological Survival Horror Game. (End SVideo) More Wakey"
Ive been craving a unique game experience for years after constant remakes/remasters in this nostalgia culture. Alan Wake 2 was just what I needed. A breath of fresh air!
Say what you want about Alan Wake 2, but there was clear love and passion that went into making it. A thing sorely missing from most triple A studios unfortunately.
God I loved this game. Like yeah it's goofy and stupid in a lot of places but that just adds to the experience for me. It's still a really cool story where it counts imo
It's a great way to ruin any chance at immersion. They put in this "goofy" stuff because the developers lost faith in their own product. They pitch it as survival thriller horror only to then bait and switch the player. It's disingenuous, and makes the player feel like a sucker.
@@theedwardian It doesn't ruin the immersion because the story itself is already inherently weird. It's a story about a writer writing himself into a story about himself writing himself into a story. Having moments like the Herald Of Darkness scene fits perfectly within the tone of the story. And just because something is survival horror doesn't mean it has to take itself 100% seriously all the time and never have you feel anything than fear at all times. That's called pacing. You know, being creative?
@@parknplay8328 That just sounds like bad writing Even Twilight fan fics did a better job, and their product was 50 Shades of Gray. Both awful, both better than the Alan Wake stories.
The musical part is so early in the game all things considered but its so memorable. like yeah its cringe and forced but thats exactly what it is. Trying to figure out wtf is going on
As someone who hasn't played the game. I can't tell which parts are edits from Dunkey or actual gameplay. I don't know if that means if Dunkeys editing got much better or if the game is that insane
just finished the game last night. been playing every single remedy game since Max Payne 1. The creativity and the feel their games have are unparalleled
Glad to see more of Dunk’s poetic side. These rhyme type reviews are the pinnacle of artistic expression. In a world of darkness wakey is my Champion of Light.
lol to be fair, Dunkey said so much and yet nothing at all about the actual game. The silver lining to all of this is, you could be Days Gone, and nobody wants that.
As someone who is very well-versed in the Remedy lore this video makes perfect sense in my head but i can't imagine what kind of a fever dream this must've been for people who don't know anything about Alan Wake 😭😭
This game makes you truly FEEL like Alan Wake II. And this video truly makes you FEEL like your brain exploded from that lore dump and voice actor explanation.
Sometimes Dunkey makes a video where he just explains a game's plot, and rides off just how absurd the game is without inserting any of his signature bits into it. This is one of thise videos.
Youre alan wake videos are even more funny after having watched this game win several awards at game awards this year and having thought since your first alan wake video that it was a silly funny game that took itself too seriously😭 love that you draw comedy from some of the most serious moments in gaming. I havent barely commented on any of your videos because I thought you’d never see me but i’ve watched everything of yours over the past 10 years. Fuck
This game was awesome. Hearing you're explanation is pretty much what was going on in my head by the time I finished it, just with a different accent. Great video.
That song is by 'Poets of the Fall'. They were in Max Payne 2 with the song 'Late Goodbye', and I think some other works Sam Lake was involved in. They've got some good music!
It's so fucking stupid how I watched this a month ago and found it funny as hell because I couldn't understand anything and now that I'm turning into a Remedy fan, I actually understand just about everything talked about in this video and found it strangely more coherent than the games.
