Hi there. My name is Morgan Rysdon and I'm an Alexander Technique teacher. Today I'd like to talk to you about breathing.
To be honest, I haven't always "loved" Alexander Technique's the Whispered 'Ah'...Mostly because I didn't understand WHY I was doing it and, also no doubt, because I was taking myself WAY too seriously when I was trying to practice on my own.
To put it simply: it's a vocal exercise.
Ideally, all students of the Alexander Technique, and anyone else who wishes to improve their quality of breathing, speaking, and/or performing, will (at some point or another) learn this exercise. It improves the coordination of your breath and your voice and will contribute to your overall sense of ease when it comes to your breathing apparatus as a whole.
I hope you find this video helpful and it sparks curiosity in you.

*haha* Right, Michele?!?! Happy to share my knowledge of breathing since there is so much to this (seemingly) simple thing we do so often-and without a lot of thought-everyday.

What is the reason for doing these? And how does thinking of a "smile of the eyes" help?

How do I stop the back of my tongue from wanting to come up and cut off some of the air flow?

Hi there! Let me say, the fact that you are even aware your tongue keeps wanting to come up (or probably in most instances does come up!) and cuts off your airflow is already a great place to start! I know that might seem strange to hear, but the important thing is that we start to notice these patterns of interference. I'd suggest trying this activity when you don't really care about the outcome (for example: when your doing dishes, driving in your car, in the shower, etc.) so that the stakes are low, so to speak. And before you begin the practice of whispered 'ah' think to yourself I'd like to "allow my tongue to relax down into my mouth". Then observe what happens. Sometimes when we practice things-wanting it to be a certain way-we focus too much which leads to more tightening and straining of muscles. Starting in this way may eliminate some of this for you and give your muscles a chance to experience the activity in a new way. After you've practiced some I'd love to hear back from you. Good luck!

@@MorganRysdonCenterStudio it's hard for me to not think about it when doing it.

@@deloentertains3370 Oh yes! I understand this dilemma! This is why I suggest practicing the Whispered 'Ah' while you're busy doing something else. Don't take it too seriously and try practicing in as many different places/areas of your life as possible. Most times when we focus on doing something really well, it triggers a certain amount of stress and tension in ourselves as we aim to do "it" right. Do your best to not care about the outcome...then practice. Then practice again. And again. It starts here and it'll get better with continuous practice. Good luck!

@@MorganRysdonCenterStudio thank you! I've been doing what you said. And it's working. I can feel my voice getting relaxed more and more! My voice is getting to its natural state and starting to fall in its proper place now. Couldn't have improved without your help. Thank YOU SO much! My tongue and throat tension is relaxing more and more everyday. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽❤

@@deloentertains3370 So happy to read all of this from you! I'm confident that with practice it'll only get easier and become more accessible to you as you continue practicing. (Over time you may become-dare I say-even more sensitive to the smallest amounts of strain or tension thus allowing you to quickly relax the muscles of the tongue, throat, and neck.) Enjoy this more natural and easy way of breathing and speaking. ❤
