My ranking (I just need to see Zone of Interest): 9. Maestro (Does a lot of things right, looks amazing, most of the performances are very good, but narratively jumbled and underwritten. It’s a perfect example of an Oscar Bait film) 8. Anatomy of a Fall (A little too long, but really good court room drama) 7. Killers of the Flower Moon (Similar to Anatomy of a Fall, I felt the length and wished it was from Mollie’s perspective, but it’s Scorsese. It’s still great, it’s basically country Goodfellas but more depressing) 6. American Fiction (A smart, witty, and poignant satire with Jeffrey Wright’s best performance) 5. Past Lives (One of A24’s best and a great story of the complications of love) 4. Oppenheimer (The big favorite to win! I do think Nolan fell short in some areas, namely the female characters, but it’s by far his best movie in years. Expertly crafted and Cillian Murphy & RDJ crushed it) 3. Barbie (Probably one of the highest on this. I get some of your criticisms with the script and I do think some elements could’ve been fleshed out more, like I wouldn’t nominate America Ferrara either, though no shade to her, but similar to something to what Lord and Miller did with The Lego Movie, I thought Gerwig was able to balance being absurd and silly with being smart and emotionally complex. Plus it’s funny as hell thanks to Ryan Gosling) 2. The Holdovers (A new Christmas classic despite what Alexander Payne said and as much as I loved Murphy in Oppenheimer, I’m rooting for Paul Giamatti to win) 1. Poor Things (The weirdest and horniest movie of the year, but also beautiful and hilarious, like if Tim Burton made a combo of Frankenstein and Barbie 😆. Emma Stone’s best role and Mark Ruffalo crushed it, my personal favorite Yorgos movie)

Just because barbie was written by two good directors, that doesn't automatically make it a great script. It's the weakest part of the film, why is the majority of people think the story and theme development lacked... it's because of the script. Let's just be honest about it. 100% with you Austin

I disagree. While yes the monologue is cringe and its a little overstuffed; its sharp, funny, unpredictable and has a deeper message than just boy vs girl, but a philosophical look at what is living worth for and how the good and the bad is what life is worth living for. The direction while the crafts are fantastic and the tone is perfect visually its kinda generic. I wouldn't put her in my personal top 10 best Directed films of the year because there were so many well directed films.

the reason why the script for barbie is so applauded is because of how hard it is to adapt barbie into a film. barbie has a lot of negative connotations in our society and has been at the center of a lot of controversy, however barbie is also a beacon of inspiration for a lot of little girls. for that reason developing a barbie film through mattel while still honing in on the negatives is quite a feat and to make the story emotional and engaging makes it all the more impressive. it’s definitely a screen writing feat!

Any other year would have Poor Things as #1, but damn, Oppenheimer is so amazing it’s arguably the best film over the past several years. FYI Poor Things received the second most nominations for the Oscars and BAFTA (11), and as a British film could squeeze out a surprise win for that awards body.

I don’t know how you do these lists, but I love watching them. I’m not as decisive as you are because there are several of these movies that I love, and I could genuinely place one above the other on any given day. I decided to rank these according to the artistic and tone style that resonated the most with me. I like quirky, subversive and smaller scale stories that speak to the human experience, so my list will probably reflect that: 1. Poor Things 2. Past Lives 3. Oppenheimer 4. American Fiction 5. The Holdovers 6. Barbie 7. Killers of the Flower Moon To be fair, I actually really liked to loved my top six of movies. Killers of the Flower Moon did not focus enough on the Osage tribe, and, I know it’s boring to say, but the length and pacing did not feel earned or necessary in this movie. It really killed my overall experience. To be fair, my girlfriend’s mom made us watch this at 10 PM on Christmas, and when we all think of a late night Christmas movie, I think that, as a collective, we immediately think of a 3.5 hour Scorsese downer. Obviously, it wasn’t the best viewing experience, but I really have no interest in revisiting it. The complaints about blockbusters this year are fair, but this is one of the deepest years that I can think of in terms of quality movies. I still really want to see The Zone of Interest and Anatomy of a Fall. I think those will rank fairly high for me. However, honestly, you know how there are those movies that you “know” you probably won’t care much for so it’s hard to find the time/energy to watch it? That’s what Maestro is for me. I’m sure I will get around to it, but I am fairly confident that it would be towards the bottom of my list, but I have a feeling that killers of the flower moon may still be my least favorite.

I’m such a Holdover stan. Required holiday viewing from now on. I recently made my sister watch it too. I haven’t shut up about it. Also a big fan of American Fiction. So many layers. All that talk about art being subjective and the dumbing down of ideas to make things more digestible or commercial for a bigger audience. My personal favorite Nolan film is Dunkirk, but that moment in Dolby theatre when the bomb was tested in Oppenheimer shook me to my core and the RDJ performance was so stunning…

4:55 I actually thought one of the coolest parts of Barbie happened when they left Barbieland, and that's Ken's whole thing. Having him get inspired to believe he can do more with his life because he sees all these men doing jobs he's been "raised" for lack of a better word to believe only Barbies are fit for is such a brilliant allegory for girls being inspired by seeing Barbie dolls that have those jobs that they were raised to believe only men are fit for that it honestly is THE thing that justifies making a movie like this. Especially when you consider that what came out of that was a shallow understanding of patriarchy, just like the corporatization of feminism can really only engender a shallow understanding of feminism, and that the conflict of the film is only resolved after everyone is able to understand each other on a deeper level, it's a truly brilliant and subversive meta-narrative for a blockbuster film. That's also why I think the screenplay nomination makes sense, because that's the sort of thing that has to be consciously present from the jump and isn't just found in the direction.

The Holdovers was an excellent movie on its own. Bloody brilliant chemistry between the characters. This movie will live on. An Oscar is not required to glorify its excellence but it would be lovely to see it win something. Also, Oppenheimer. Boom!

When it comes to barbie, I think the biggest problem is the dialogue. the actual story and the thought behind it is amazing, but the way that the characters speak can feel unnatural and forced. I own the Barbie script and I love just flipping through it reading random scenes out of order because the story is so spectacular and because it paints a picture in my mind of Greta’s vision.

Ranking the 10 1. Oppenheimer- the narrative says it all. 2. Poor Things- Artistically, atmospheric and photographically stunning 3. Killers of the flower moon-Direction, Scorsese, performances, themes, subject matter says it all 4. Zone of Interest- Beautifulfully photographed 5. Maestro-Big fan of Leonard Bernstein’s music 6. Barbie-Fun movie 7. The Holdovers-Dragged it a little bit but a fine performance by Dominic Sessa and paul giamatti 8. Past Lives-pacing works, ideal script and Greta lee work 9. Anatomy of a Fall-different movie, questionable film 10. American Fiction-didn’t like the ending but Jeffrey wright gives his best performance of his career

Where do you think the story came from? I also think there were weak points in the dialogue but Barbie is basically an original screenplay so the story is also created through the screenplay

Haven't seen Maestro 9. Barbie (tone wasn't for me) 8. American Fiction (really didn't like this one, the humor mostly works but the emotional moments didn't land and the satire wasn't as groundbreaking as it presented itself to be) 7. Killers of the Flower Moon (I wish Gladstone's character had had a bigger presence) 6. Oppenheimer (super entertaining with some unforgettable moments, but the grandiose tone did make me roll my eyes a couple times) 5. Past Lives (lovely, tender) 4. The Holdovers (instant christmas classic) 3. Poor Things (this was an absolute blast in theaters) 2. The Zone of Interest 1. Anatomy of a Fall (I loved every second of this, my second favorite movie of the year after Beau is Afraid) Feel free to roast my choices

Seen them all. For me personally: 10 - Maestro (Oscar bait film. Did nothing for me) 9 - American Fiction (It was alright) 8 - Barbie (Fun watch, but too on the nose with its themes) 7 - Killers of the Flower Moon (Many boring scenes. Have never felt that with previous Scorsese films) 6 - The Holdovers (A true feel-good movie but not much else to it. Very predictable) 5 - Oppenheimer (Nolan at his best. Soundtrack was good but overused for me, and the film was longer than it needed to be) 4 - Anatomy of a Fall (Great performances and keeps you engaged) 3 - Past Lives (Very touching film. Gives you a lot to think about in your own relationships) 2 - The Zone of interest (Wildly well crafted, well shot, very well edited and amazing sound design) 1 - Poor Things (Some of the best filmmaking I've seen. Solid all around. That soundtrack though is awesome)

For me: 1. Oppenheimer (easy winner that will probably take home at least 8/13 wins) 2. Past Lives (absolutely beautiful romance) 3. Killers of the Flower Moon (probably one of Scorsese's best films ever) 4. The Holdovers (witty comedy that reminds me a LOT of the Breakfast Club which is my favorite comedy of all time) 5. Anatomy of a Fall (best courtroom drama ever made) 6. Poor Things 7. Zone of Interest 8. Barbie 9. Maestro 10. American Fiction

Honorable Mention should be - films you wish could have made it but didn't. For me it would be: The Color Purple, Spiderverse, Saltburn, May December, All of Us Strangers* *One of the best movies of the year, and Andrew Scott was the best performance of the year.... but virtually ignored for the most part by awards bodies. I blame the slow rollout and poor marketing (they have only recently started to amp it up - but obviously too late for Oscars now)

If each Best Picture wins just 1 Oscar, I think it'll be: American Fiction: Adapted Screenplay Anatomy of a Fall: Original Screenplay Barbie: Best Original Song The Holdovers: Best Supporting Actress Killers of the Flower Moon: Best Actress Maestro: Best Makeup and Hairstyle Oppenheimer: Best Director Past Lives: Best Original Screenplay (although I'm predicting AOAF) Poor Things: Costume Design The Zone of Interest: Best International Film To clarify, I'm not saying Oppenheimer won't win Best Picture or Best Supporting Actor. I'm just saying that if it only wins one award, it's strongest bid is Best Director. Any thoughts? 🙃

American Fiction doesn’t even have a release date where I’m from, The Zone of Interest is coming out in like 2 weeks , and I’ll probably see Anatomy of a Fall next week, so those are the ones I haven’t yet seen but this is my ranking: 7. *Maestro* (It’s alright, Cooper is really good and Mulligan is incredible, but I definitely wouldn’t have nominated it) 6. *Poor Things* (I love this film 9/10, only this low because all these except Maestro are in my top 7 of the year) 5. *The Holdovers* (Cosiest film of the year, already a Christmas classic) 4. *Killers of the Flower Moon* (I need Scorsese to live forever and continue to drop masterpieces like this) 3. *Barbie* (The most fun I had in a theatre this year, not perfect but I loved it) 2. *Past Lives* (I don’t know what hurts more, this film or Nyad getting as many nominations as this masterpiece) 1. *Oppenheimer* (The cinematic achievement of the year, should and probably will sweep)

Past Lives - a really nice film. I liked it. 5. Anatomy of a Fall - it was okay 6. Killers of the Flower Moon - the running time really ruined it 7. Barbie - This was not for me. 8. Maestro - The stinker of the year. It was so boring. I wish other movies were nominated instead. I did not see American Fiction but I want to. I did not see Poor Things.
