This is a Motormouth couple car review of the all-new 2022 Honda Civic. For 23 years straight in Canada, it’s been the best selling passenger car and also one of the top three best selling cars in the US over the past 48 years.The new Honda Civic offers two engines, a 2L 4-cylinder matched with a CVT, 158 horsepower and 138 lb-ft of torque. Our test model has the 1.5L turbo 4-cylinder with 180 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque. That’s up 6 horsepower and 15 lb-ft of torque from the previous model. It comes standard with FWD, AWD is optional and there is no manual transmission available. The interior is refined, simplistic with a touch of elegance. The striking honeycomb mesh accent stretches across the dash from door to door hiding the air vents and creating a uncluttered design. Honda says, it focused on high quality materials especially on touch points. Materials were chosen for practicality including the centre console design to hide smudges and fingerprints. The Touring trim is where you’ll find the extra features like the bigger 9” touchscreen, 10.2” digital driver display, leather seats, wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, wireless charger, power driver and passenger seats, heated rear seats and a 12 speaker Bose sound system which sounds great. The new Honda Civic Sedan has a clean and modern design with a low hood and front fenders. Standard 16” wheels, 18” on the top two trims. The Civic body structure is the most rigid in Civic history. The stiffer structure supports improvement in ride, handling and NVH ( noise, vibration, harshness). The new stiffer body also reduces the transmission of noise and wind. Honda says this new Civic has a simple and uncluttered interior design focusing on high quality materials especially on touch points. Materials were also chosen for practicality including the centre console designed to hide smudges and fingerprints. The Civic features a larger front grille and a bold LED headlight design. Gone are the sharp, angular exterior features, it now offers a simplified, clean and elegant design. The slimmer taillights and softer lines give the rear a sophisticated look.

I just bought a 2022 Touring and love it. Haven’t had a civic since 2013. I don’t know why people say this car looks “boring”. It’s modern and simple. Past generations of civics have always looked over designed and like a transformer. They looked like a typical new car a 18 year old would get when they first start driving. Very juvenile. This design is grown up. Looks more like an adults car. :)

I own a 10th gen hatch and absolutely love it inside and out but this update is growing on me. The interior is beautiful in this 11th generation. I have also been impressed with the 11th gen hatch, particularly the Audi-inspired fastback look from the rear. I’ll be test driving one when they are available. As far as the 1.5 not generating enough passenger compartment warmth, I had no issues last winter when temps were -20F last winter.

Great review, folks. I think self-styled automotive "enthusiasts," including myself, often underestimate the challenges of designing a vehicle like the Civic. A car that can be driven for five years or more without looking and feeling out-of-date. An economical vehicle that serves the missions of a daily driver and a long distance "tripper" equally well for a single driver, a couple, or a small family. Compared to such competing demands designing a vehicle aimed at a single mission is far less challenging. The design of the new Elantra is undeniably arresting but its over-styled creases and bulges (a common feature of Hyundai's design language) suggest it's a descendant of a spaceship in a 1930's Flash Gordon movie serial. I couldn't agree more that the new Civic's design will age far better. All in all, I think Honda has a winner in the new generation.

They also corrected the styling of the 10th generation and went from something a teenager in their puberty would come up with, like the fake vents and overly aggressive bodylines to a more refined, mature and sleeker styling.

I have a 2019 Civic HB with the 1.5T and I live in Calgary. I believe that Honda tweaked the engine software since the 1.5 was introduced. The cabin has no problem getting warm in the winter. Overall the 1.5 has been a peach of an engine. Oh and BTW though I love my hatch I'm the first to admit that its styling is, um, kinda busy.

The 1.5 litre turbo inline-4 engine is terrific! It’s of course very smooth, which is typical of Honda and it has fantastic power and torque, with a beautifully flat torque curve (max torque from 1700rpm all the way to 5500 rpm!). I’ve had a 2016 Touring since new and now have 109,000 km on it and there have been no issues. I’ve always taken it to the Honda dealership that I bought it at for regular service.

The styling of the previous generation Civic grew on me eventually and looked really good in the upper trims. This one blew me away and could easily pass for something European. I also like how Hondas feel really solid (doors close nicely) and they feel stable at higher speeds but they won't go overboard on the price if you aim for the mid level trims.

Hello Andrea and Zack. I really love watching your reviews; you're both so objective, and professional. Your technical experience with automobiles shines through loud and clear. Andrea, I especially love your exuberance/ excitement when you love a car. You and I have the same taste; as I always agree with your choices as well. I LOVE the all new Honda Civic. Its styling is beautiful, so sophisticated; styling you'd more likely only find on high line German cars, such as Audi; BMW. Lastly, it's a Honda; therefore reliability will never be an issue. Further, in true Honda fashion: Handling is perfect; ride quality-superb; engine power and overall performance is excellent. The quality of materials and fit and finish, in true Honda fashion, is unparalleled for a car in this class segment. A powerful turbocharged 1.5 liter engine, with 180 horsepower, producing 177 Lb ft of torque that peaks at just 1700 rpm, and remains flat all the way through 5000 rpm's, making the Civic good for a 0-60mph time of just 7.1 seconds, all the while, getting 39 mpg highway and 30 mpg, in the city. What more can one ask for, not to mention class leading rear leg room, trunk, etc. I can't say enough good about this car. I also really am in LOVE with the all new 2023 Honda Accord. I'll be buying a new car soon. I've got to weigh the pros and cons of both the Civic and Accord. The major deciding factor, is considering price, and value of each. Again, thank you for such an informative, thought provoking review. -Thanks, Tim

I bought the Touring bc it has power seats that go in 4 directions & I especially needed it to go UP! 🤪 I sit up higher than my previous ‘02 Civic LX and can generally see around better. From what I've read, people have had success with; 1) a slightly thicker oil 5w-30 full-synthetic 2) also to change it early, every 4000-5000km (2500-3000 miles) 3) to allow your engine to idle for 1-2 minutes, for the piston-rings to make a good seal, before starting to drive. I think the problem was that sometimes people would start their cold car, 1.5L-Turbo Hondas, and would start driving without even allowing the car to lube up, so there would be some oil dilution by the added blow-by of the fuel mixture and would further dilute the oil. Also, would not allow the engine to fully warm up, before they would shut it off, still cold, at the grocery store, just 1 mile away from their home. So the engine never got up to temp to burn off the added fuel dilution, and the engine wear will be higher because it was used as if it was warm, while it was still cold and oil was diluted, so extra wear and tear that wouldn't happen, if it was allowed to warm up before use, and kept the oil good through the oil-change-cycle. I've heard great things about a tiny bit of Rislone Engine Oil Supplement with Zinc Treatment in every oil change, for cold-start protection for the engine bearings in our colder regions.

I'm so glad to see that Honda has gone back to a more conservative look as standard for the Civic. I find that it lost it's identity a bit for a generation or two. Leave the sharp/angular design for the SI version. This car remains the best value on the market for a nice, all around car that is fun to drive.

Keep in mind, standard features vary Canada vs. US; the US LX does not have heated seats and the US Touring doesn't have heated rear seats or heated wheel; and, many of your viewers are in the states!! Keep up the great work! (NB- no Sport trim for Canada (???), and i'm disappointed the EXL trim was dropped)...

I like the honest opinions of this channel, nice job! I would go with the non turbo 2.0L too. Honda CVTs are very good, especially going uphill, seems to be much more powerful than traditional transmissions.

I remember my 2013 Dodge Dart with a 1.4L turbo took FOREVER to warm up during winter here in Canada. I won’t go below a 2.0L for engine size again after that experience.

My concern is the 1.5L Turbocharged issues with oil dilution and long term reliability. Thanks for addressing this but I am still hesitance. I had 3 Honda’s (2004 Civic, 2014 Accord Sport, 2019 Acura RDX A-Spec). This Civic Hatchback is what I want as my around town car, fuel efficient and DYI HomeDepot hauler.

Is it still super low seating? I found it hard to get in and out of my friends current generation civic.
@stuntmonkey00

This was the deal breaker for me on the 10th gen. The rear hip point was quite low in the rear so it didn't work for us, very hard for elderly people to get in and out of. They look like similar sized cars but the Impreza was noticeably easier to get in and out of for people with leg/hip mobility.
