The 2022 Honda Civic Touring Is Brilliant. But How Does It Handle A 700 Mile Road Trip?

Honda’s new 11th generation Civic is very good. How good? Tom Voelk takes a 2022 Civic Touring on a 700 mile weekend getaway to Walla Walla, Washington to check out the comfort, quietness, fuel efficiency and Bose Centerpoint audio system to see if it’s best-in-class (because Mazda3, Hyundai Elantra, Kia Forte, Toyota Corolla, Nissan Sentra and Volkswagen Jetta want your money too). It’s a full look at the best Civic ever plus a little bit of Washington wine country thrown in for good measure.
Note- there's an odd blank spot at 11:04. It's where Evil Twin complains that Honda left a seat pocket off the driver's side chair. Not sure what happened there, all is well on my end. I'd reload but it screws things up with RU-vid.

Great video. My beef is with the car manufacturers who almost exclusively provide only top-line models for review, save for the walk-arounds done by local dealers. I love some of the bells and whistles - waiting for the Civic hatch, and also looking at Mazda3 hatch - but they add approx $1,000 worth of extras that add $6,000 to the retail price. Isn't it ever thus? I'd love these extras - especially the sunroofs - but they're really hard to justify when you're tooling along at 55MPH on urban/suburban roads and freeways most of the time. I hope the mfrs see this comment and consider making either base models, or models one up from the base, available for review. This is where most of the sales are anyway. If you do get a hatch for review, compare the cargo space to the HR-V. In watching the Mazda3 reviews, I noted that there is more cargo space in a Mazda3 hatch than in a CX-30.

Tom, your pacing is consistently superb. You focus on the majors --- changes, comparison, performance, ergonomics --- and you breeze by the minors --- style, fit and finish--- without neglecting them. Throw in a little culture without forgetting the mission, sprinkle it with a little whimsy, and give us our vocabulary word for the day --- who the hell else has ever used "palindrome" in a car review? --- and you have a winner, the current standard for entertaining, but not preening or droning, car reviews. There's not a better one-man-band out there, for sure. I like the guys at Throttle House, TFL earns its keep, Sarah -n- Tuned is her bitchin' self, and Ryan over at KBB is a standout. But you, Tom, just hit the sweet spot for delivering good information with an authoritative voice that doesn't intimidate, and without the peacock feathers and the pissing contests. Thanks for leading the way. And the Civic? I dunno. Pushing $30K seems a little rich for a competent compact. I have a 2012. I love the new, more mature look --- not that I slighted the boy-racer styling of the previous gen --- but I'll never buy a vehicle with a CVT or a tablet sticking out of the dash. That's just the ugliest interior trend of the last forty years. And everybody's doing it now, for some reason. Is it a mandate amongst a cabal of auto manufacturing executives at Bohemian Grove? Who are they copying? Who started this? My bet is Apple. Ugh.

About the pricing... Honda doesn't do cash on the hood, so you're actually going to pay $29,XXX for this Civic. Once prices return to a pre-supply shortage normal, there will be plenty of discounts on competitors that will lesson the "good deal" green-light on the Civic. That being said, even if it will not be best-deal-in-class, we've had 3 Civics in our family and would gladly put one on our test drive list if we were currently in the market.
@DrivenCarReviews
@DrivenCarReviews 3 года назад

Tom, an outstanding review, to be sure. I'm really looking forward to a similar one for the new Civic hatchback as soon as possible. Was interested in the image of the instrument panel showing the tach and speedo -- you were driving about 70 - 72 mph and the tach showed slightly over 2000 rpms. Curious, were you driving up hill at the time. With the final drive ratio (3.24) and the highest transmission ratio (.405), the engine should have been turning between 1200 - 1250 rpm all things being equal. It must have been under load; the 1.5L motor goes "on boast" at about 2000 rpm, so this may well account for the less than stellar highway mileage. Like most turbos, once they go on boast, they become very thirsty very quickly.

I think the 2022 Honda Civic is a fantastic vehicle on the outside and inside. My issue is with the price and the dealership experience. Unlike Toyota and other rivals, Honda doesn't offer manufacturer rebates. Honda dealerships also tend to be snobby and give zero dealership discounts (even before the chip shortage). In fact, they pre-install accessories and force you to buy it. This means you pay more than MSRP for a new Honda vehicle. So when you factor the higher price, you realize that this 2022 Honda Civic isn't such a great deal. On top of that, Honda salespeople/sales managers tend to be rude & snooty when you ask for discounts.

Which is part of the reason why I started the price quote service. Seriously. People think Brand X is too expensive only to find Brand Y doesn't deal. Far too many people don't do the research.

OMG! Los Hernandez tamales! The very, very best. (This from a former Texan.) It's worth a road trip from Seattle to Union Gap (near Yakima) just for lunch. In fact, I've long maintained that the best 300 miles of interstate in the US is I-90 from Seattle to Spokane. The scenery changes so radically and quickly that a 4+ hour trip is never boring. Over the Cascades to the "dry side" of the state. Take in the little town of Cle Elum if you're a fan of "Northern Exposure". Across the mighty Columbia and put on some Woody Guthrie ("Roll on Columbia")for background music. The best wide spot in the road is George, Washington, the home of the Martha Inn. A gorgeous concert venue sits atop the cliffs over the Columbia if you're travelling in the summer. On to toward Spokane where gigantic rock formations along the road were once at the bottom of a gigantic lake. Take an alternate route back from Spokane by heading south on US 195 to the Palouse, where wheat grows on hills the size of mountains. Head west at Lewiston (named for Merriweather of Lewis and Clark fame) with a stop in Pullman, home of WSU, and pick up a large tin of Cougar Gold cheddar developed in WWII for soldiers to have cheese that remained fresh without refrigeration for a millennia or two. Then west on US 12 toward Walla Walla. Once a sleepy little town with nothing much to distinguish it, the Washington wine industry has turned it into a mini-Napa Valley tourist attraction surrounded by soil and climate that matches the grape growing regions of France. If wine tasting is your thing, stop and get a hotel room to sleep it off. The wine fueled renaissance in Walla Walla offers some attractive choices. Head west again and pick up I-82 in the Tri-Cities (Kennewick, Pasco, and Richland) where the Yakima, Snake, and Columbia rivers converge and near the Hanford site where fuel for the first atomic bombs was processed. Then on to Yakima with a stop at Union Gap for tamales. I-82 will take you to I-90 at Ellensburg or you can take a more interesting route on US 12 west over the Cascades south of Mt. Rainier toward I-5 or turn north on Washington highway 123 to see that gorgeous mountain up close and personal. Either way you'll eventually find yourself back in the Seattle Tacoma metro area. Take 4 or 5 days and you won't regret either the roads or the sights. Oh yeah. A Honda Civic would be a good choice for the journey. Personally, though, I prefer my GTI. My dog agrees based on the rear seat HVAC in the VW. 😁

@@DrivenCarReviews I've told the Tourism Board they should pay me but to no avail. I'd lived all over the US when I discovered Washington 30 years or so ago. Business has taken me all over the state and nation since then but whenever I come home I know I'd never leave. Those who've never been to the Pacific Northwest should come to Seattle, rent a car and explore. Just don't move here. We're full. 😜

Three weeks ago we were shopping between 2022 Civic EX and 2021 Hyundai Sonata SEL. It matches feature-to-feature but we end up getting the Sonata SEL. Reasons: * Due to car shortage worldwide, Honda markup their price by almost $2K above MSRP for the 2022 models while our nearest Hyundai dealership is having a sale event. I get a lower monthly payment on the Sonata SEL. Albeit only around $20/month for 60 months. * My wife thinks that the Sonata has a better rear-view and has a more spacious interior. * I actually think the Sonata is lighter to drive due to the larger engine displacement (I think) and the punch from the 2.5L engine when floored is livelier. * Personally I think the Sonata interior is crossing that of luxury cars. * The Lane following assist could go on for miles without asking you to touch the wheel. Almost like Tesla Autopilot.

We recently got our hands on a Honda with the lane keeping assist thingy (got an 2022 Odyssey) and my take on it is that it is "two hand sandwich eating safe". I mean, it seems perfectly timed so you can take both hands of the wheel, hold the sandwich with both hands, safely take a bite without the risk of big mess involved with one hand sandwich biting, continue holding the sandwich with one hand and the other goes back to the wheel perfectly timed before the warning.

The new Civic looks great, inside and out, with one exception in my opinion: the black plastic lower fascia/grille looks cheap. At least it looks better than some of Toyota's weird front ends. I bought a new 1982 Accord 2-door hatchback, a car that I loved. It was much, much smaller than the new Civic. I believe that the many excellent Asian cars are the reason why American manufacturers have abandoned the car market. Yeah, I know, there's also more profit to be had from SUVs and trucks.

The newest Civic has a very nice, plain, straightforward, decent design. While some brands are experimenting on quirky design, Honda has designed a humble car which I’m sure most people will appreciate. Only drawback is with CVT which can never be improved sufficiently, although it is in my opinion the best tranny ever.

I see Honda ditched the 10th gen Civic Touring's heated rear seats in lieu of USB plugs (a fair trade). I do wish they'd kept the 10th gen's configurable center storage console. This new Civic Touring sedan has some nice tech upgrades but I think I'll keep my 10th gen Civic Touring sedan another year or two before considering an upgrade.
