The Water Starter theme still sounds harder to determine than the Grass Starter theme for me (mainly because Feraligatr, Swampert, and Primarina kind of sound like stretches at a glance).

I can understand for the Grass and Fire side. Water is a surprising one; I can see some of them while not for others. Interesting video nonetheless.

Actually (yes, I'm one of THOSE guys :P love you too)... Despite the name, Fraligatr is more closely resembling of a Caiman than Alligator or Crocodile.

I kinda chuckled at this because I was playing around with a branched evo starter for kicks before SwSh came out and the fire 1 just happened to be based around cattle. It was a fire steel bull and cow combo. The 1st form was just a calf called Torcalf and it branched at the 2nd stage between male and female. The physical focused Blasteer and special focused Heatfer. Terrible names I know. But the final was Balzebull which had huge steel horns and Torchcow (again not a great name) which had a cannon on its back. Didn't even notice I made the next of the zodiac.

I always thought Primarina would be more like an A-Bomb, because the spikes on its tail look more like a missile's ailerons as for Swampert... i think he's more arm oriented. a Cestus would be more fitting for him maybe.

Feraligatr is more likely based on a bear trap due to its jaw as it is The Big Jaw Pokemon.

Pretty interesting theory. I can actually admit I find the idea to be interesting. Another "theory" you should do is "Why do delta Pokemon not exist in the main series?" I'd like to get theoretical answers being that there is no 100% accurate answer without evidence.

Well for the grass type this theme doesn't exactly fit to all their stages. I mean Treecko is just a gecko, and geckos are still quite alive (and I doubt we can say it is very precisely based on specific extinct species), Turtwig similarly is some rather not very specific tortoise. Also Chikorita hasn't much of sauropod in the design, it starts to have only after it evolves to bayleef. And also - as You noticed itself - it's very much unclear in case of serperior and whole Snivy line. Also Chestnaught before evolving is more of a hedgehog or something similar I would even say that chespin is kinda like... chestnut mixed with hedgehog :D Similar case for Decidueye previous form (ok stilt owl is arguably similar to rowlet, but what's with the middle stage?), and Rilaboom previous stages. (Well on the other hand You can easily fit anything in that group as almost any group of animals would have some extinct members... but that would be kinda lazy way to do it of course). And I really wonder what they do with the fire type if they use the whole chineese zodiac :D (well maybe they try to go with... another zodiac? But greek one doesn't seem right for that purpose) And nope, Delphox isn't furthest from the actual theme. Foxes are pretty much canine (ok somewhat of a mix of canine and feline features in a way If You ask me, but that's beside the point) but honey badger and a rat? Definitely further away. Well cyndaquil does somewhat resemble something a little similar to rat, it looks like some kind of small rodent I give them that. But again fenneking could easily be pushed through as a dog. Water starters... weapons? I mean I saw it already but... it seems really farfetched. I mean some of them... are not much believable. (Not to mention some stages clearly don't have them... and isn't a theme of the starter something which should kinda be present through it entire line?). I mean when even is this cascet/brass knuckles (and neither tekko-kagi) on any of totodile's line? And tessen on mudkip's line? There aren't those are more like some helmet ornaments than warfans. Actually oshawat with his scallop is closer to having a war fan... but this scallop acts sometimes more like a sword so it may be the first one to actuall incorporate weaponry theme through entire line. Also trident for empoleon? It's merely a decoration. I would rather go with blades (as his wings kinda acts like blades) than trident. Greninja had shurikens, but... well does it's preevolved form have these too? But ok, Frogadier clearly hase some military inspiration so... let's say it fits the theme. Loosely. Primarina is even more farfetched than totodile's and mudkip's line. Ok, maybe just more than mudkip's. Inteleon... well ok (except again the issue with preevolutions... pretty common for all the non-fire type themes). But I don't get how Muyang-Bian(and most of the names actually, Japanese is phonetically WAY simpler than English...) is so difficult to pronounce (and no, I'm not from Japan.). Actually semi aquatic is more convincing (but well on itself it can be too less). Also I don't exactly buy mudkip as axolotl pokemon, I mean it looks a lot different it's more like purely fantastical animal (with just very slight similarities to axolotl... which I probably would never notice myself). Also fun thing - actually dewott seems... very feline to me. And well the inteleon is bit of a stretch here too... but it's first form definitely looks aquatic.

@HybridHero I think Gens 13 to 24 should have the Water-starters be based on the Western Zodiac starting with Cancer, and then going around in line, the Fire-starters based on extinct Animals (maybe relatives of the extinct Grass-starters) and the Grass-starters (who are to well suited for it) be based on Weapons (BULLET-seed, Vine-WHIP, Leaf-BLADE). Then we finish the Go-Around in Gens 25 to 36, basing the Water-starters on extinction, Fire-starters on Weapons, and the Grass-starters on the Celtic Zodiac, which assigns both a Tree and an Animal to each Month

Shame that there seems to be 3 pokemon from each set holding back the obvious theories, charizard not being an actual dragon, typhlosion not being an actual rat, Delphox not being an actual dog, decidueye, serperior and rillaboom being an owl snake and Gorilla which aren't really prehistoric or extinct, and swampert feraligator and primerina not having any real weapon tie in

Samuraott may have been an otter in its previous evolutions, but it evolves into a horse, look at it. Part of this could be because Poseidon, Greek god of the sea, was also the god of horses

I think the weapon theory is a bit off. Just can't see how Primarina really fits in the weapon category. I think the bomb reference or mace tail is a bit of a stretch. Nevertheless, that doesn't compare to the Chinese zodiac theory. Im just... 🤦

Rather than weapons, I think water starters are based on semi-aquatic fauna rather than weapons, though both theories are valid.

i agree with the Grass and Fire theories, though I believe the theme for water starters are animals that spend a lot of time in water but don't live in it.

I don't believe in the theories. They are too much of a stretch. I think Cyndaquil really doesn't fit the zodiac theory. It is a badger, not a rat. Big difference. I noticed that there is a lot of confusion over foxes in the comment section. For me, the real answer is obvious. Seriously, would it kill people to look at a wolf picture and then a fox picture. Now can they notice the similarity? Foxes look nothing like a cat by comparison. No, pointy ears don't count. They are the norm among wild canines. In domestic dogs, pointy ears are still pretty common. If anything, a wolf is basically a a bigger bulkier fox that has turned gray. At least the video is good for pointing out the obvious similarity. I think it is wierd to censor guns. So Inteleon is less obvious. This censoring makes no sense. Pokemon is already a violent franchise. The games are rated E. The Digimon and Yu-Gi-Oh shows are rated Y7. The Pokemon show does the exact same thing. I did look it up and found something odd. Toward the end of the origional Indigo League series, Ash returns home and visits Professor Oak. He also gets to see his boxed Pokemon in person. The Krabby and Muk part make sense. I seen them before. However there are a bunch of Tauros that came straight out of nowhere. How Ash got them is a mystery. In looking stuff up, I found that the Taurus did come up in a Dratini episode. This episode was banned due to gun violence, so I never saw it. The reasoning is really weak. I can understand having no guns in something aimed at really little kids. This is something like My Little Pony or Barney. However Pokemon is far more violent and mature. It is more geared to older kids. Ash is explicitly 10 so that fits the demographics. The most powerful Pokemon moves are far more violent and intense than guns. This is especially true for the nuking gimmicks of guns 7 and 8. So the pacifist kiddy ship sailed long ago. So one can totally put guns in Pokemon without massing up the ratings. It would barely be a blip on the radar. I can even think of people using guns before. Team Rocket shot a giant dragonite at Bill's house. An old lady shot lots of guns when tentacool invaded the land. This is just really inconsistant.

Water starter theory is a HUGE stretch. Also, how is fox less related to a dog than a badger to a mouse? Typhlosion is where that falls apart for me, honestly. Those two are not related at all.

the fire theory really just isnt viable enough. Typhlosion is a bear/wolverine not a rodent, foxes are related to dogs but arent dogs. The weapon theme also isnt that credible. ngl these are kind of off in some cases.

I’ve ALWAYS hated the Chinese zodiac theory. Especially since typhlosion and Delphox are pretty big stretches. I honestly hope that the next fire starter ISNT from the zodiac
