If a thief wants your stuff, they have a way of getting what's yours. I use a Grade 8 hex head bolt with a locking washer and nut. I tighten it down with massive wrench so it won't fall off. Changing the hex bolt to a socket head bolt will slightly increase the anti-theft property. I have experienced my RV stolen from a secure lot, coupler lock and hitch pin in place, all compromised. Now, I go to extremes, still looking for better products. Thanks for the video.

I really like my 180 hitch by WeighSafe. Two different ball sizes and they have a double pin lock built into the hitch already. A lot more compact then this setup. 8” drop 3” shank = $260 on amazon plus a lock for the hitch shank of your choosing. Definitely informative for someone who has already purchased the B&W though. Thanks for sharing, BBTBRV. There are folks as of yesterday who had items not locked down stolen from their garages, carports, and even off their utility trailers. My wife just told me that a victim had a video of a dark vehicle driving by their driveway, then the vehicle backed into their driveway and a man & woman got out of their dark vehicle, hooked the entire trailer to their hitch and drove off. The utility trailer had a large generator on it. This is insane-crazy of the thievery. Sorry you had someone try to take your B&W hitch. Glad you got some nice lockable pins. Have a Merry Christmas.
@garyblatt8925
@garyblatt8925 5 лет назад
Great Video. I hate thieves. I walked out to my truck in October and some jerk stole the plug out of my receiver and took the pin with them. So I purchased a new plug and a less expensive lock than what is shown for the B&W hitch to keep people from helping themselves to my receiver plug. On a side note, if you live in the rust belt, be sure to lubricate your locking pins, key holes and threads with a good grease (I chose CRC White Lithium at Rural King) as the salt brines and calcium chloride mixtures can creep through the plastic protective covers and harden inside the lock mechanisms and on the threads. A quick coating of grease will keep these parts working after a harsh Pennsylvania winter. Also, spray down the treads on your D-ring shackles with a coat of spray grease as well. It will help them to work smoothly for many years to come.

I recently bought a Curt extended 3 ball mount that has a total of 4 pins also. I've looked into these type of pin/locks and too many say they seize over time. Plus, my hitch sticks out so far I remove it when not in use. But there may be times when I want to leave it installed. I had a a set of 4 keyed alike 30mm MasterLocks, tiny little things. They fit and locked in the pin holes! Now, a small set of bolt cutters would cut them like butter; but as you noted, it is the casual theft they prevent.

JD, you should check out the lock pins that "bulletproof hitches" sells. similar price, but you dont have to screw the key. Only reason i mention that, is because over time, the road grime and any dirt you drive in does make the key hole kinda tight. I would assume that those pins have all stainless steel internals, so i would also recomend putting some graphite powder in the key hole every once in a while.

I've had two locking hitch pins, and they both rusted shut. One of them I got off by spraying with WD-40 and let sit for a couple hours. The other would not take the WD-40, so a crowbar made simple work of getting it off. Lesson here is: WD-40 rocks, and the locking pin will only keep honest people from stealing it.

I bought a Fastway hitch system (2-ball) similar to this. But I didn't need to be taught a lesson. I went ahead and ordered 2 locking pins to secure it to the truck, and to secure the 'riser' system so it couldn't be stolen in-toto........or partially. I like to keep my hitch in the receiver. For one thing, more cushion against rear-end collisions. Which DO happen.

That is exactly what I was thinking it can be so easily stolen, but with that kit will be harder. I was like why can’t no one make one with locks instead of pins. Pins make me feel so unsafe especially with all that weight in the back. I know they are the pros in the business they went to design class, but we are the ones in the field towing everything from left to right. Now I might consider bw with locked pins.

I bought a set of these when I purchased my B&W hitch. My boss told me I wasted my money because the ball assembly can’t be removed with the hitch on the truck, which is true. Well the very next weekend he was in New Orleans for a concert. When he came out to leave he found his ball assembly dangling and the pins gone. Did he buy a set of these locking pins? Nope, he bought a new set of the original pins from B&W. You just can’t fix stupid.

I think B&W makes some veeeery nice stuff, but I've never particularly cared for the multiple pin system on the tow n stow. I think being able to flip it up under the truck is pretty cool but personally I would rather keep an expensive hitch like that under the back seat of my truck or in a tool box vs leaving it out in the elements for possible rust and corrosion. Still, I think the keyed alike pins are an excellent solution if you're going to keep the hitch in the receiver. Looking forward to more BTBRV videos.
@LennyKaosium
@LennyKaosium 3 года назад
The hitch I use for my trailer is a setup I got with the trailer. It has things for attaching some bars to help control the trailer from swaying back and forth and an extra ball on the side for another thing to minimize sway. I only use it for towing the trailer and I don't get to do that often enough. This beast is HEAVY. I've left it on much longer than I should because it is HEAVY. I have a locking pin securing the main bar thing that the hitch is attached to. The hitch setup is bolted to the receiver bar. I can't imagine anyone stealing it to use because you'd have to have the bars and other stuff to fully use it. But some kids steal things just to be jerks. Doing anything to make it harder for people to steal your stuff reduces the odds of your getting ripped off. Nothing will entirely prevent someone with knowledge and the right tools. It's all about reducing those odds for casual theft.

Nice hitch it really is but it’s priced beyond what it’s worth once you buy all those locks ,which I may mention they only last a few years here in NY even with the covers salt residue will sneak in from the hitch side and they won’t come off one day you’ll have to cut them off.....simply get the receiver you need and remove it and put under the rear seat when not in use . Im pretty sure a removable hitch is illegal to have in the receiver in NY anyway when not towing . It can’t stick out past the bumper .You can thank insurance company lobbyists for that.

If you leave these pins on for any length of time. Good luck getting them unlocked if you live in any area where they put salt on the road. I bought just a hitch pin sprayed lube in the lock still had to cut it off

Been happening to us for three decades where just the pins are taken. Especially at rest stops when a trailer is hooked up. Seems the goal us to cause trouble more than just steal the pins. Always check and if possible park where you can see your vehicle especially when towing.

Too much work, I would rather buy extra pins just in case.

Cheap fix! Weld some 1.5-2 tubing around where the pin goes so thieves can’t break off the locking pin.

That's a good investment to be able to protect from theft. Well worth the price

Small drawstring bag & stow the hitch under the rear seat in the long term more practicul to use, cheaper and most important peace of mind. Thats an OTT mod thats just not needed. Working on an everyday basis it would be less hassle to hitch up.

Me, too. I take my hitch out and lock it in my travel trailer, or if I am at home, I just take it inside my garage. It stays clean, too.

I had a dirt bag steel a bearing buddy off my boat trailer while I was out on the water. It's not that it very expensive but I had to drive home 45 miles with one missing. I ended up pulling the bearing and inspecting it for damage. Also, I pulled and inspected the bearing to make sure it was not damaged on the trip. Its annoying that I had to spend an hour fixing the issue.

Anthony LaFata sorry it happened, I hate thieves. Sad for them if I catch them. Good reason to carry duct tape.

So, a replacement set of three B&W pins with clips is $30. The set of these locking pins is $150. I think I'd rather by one or two spare sets of the standard pins and throw them in the console.

We hear from very few customers who have a pin theft problem. If you are one of the few that do have a theft issue our replacement pins are $10.50, buy a few extra and put them in your glove box for a less expensive 'insurance' policy.

I use a round keyed lock on my drop pintle hitch and I came out of Walmart once to find some idiot literally trying to pick it. I just stood back laughing.

I hate to tell you this - but last week a thief stole my B&W hitch with those exact locks you bought. . .same exact B&W hitch and same 4 Infiniterule locks off my F350. I was out of town on business and they must have taken it off at the hotel - didn't notice it was missing until I got back to Texas. The strange thing is, I can't tell how they got it off . . .there were no hammer marks or any grinder mark visible. I've had that hitch and lock setup for over a year and felt comfortable it was "theft proof". Obviously it was a false sense of security. I ran across your video because I'm online buying a new B&W hitch - and looking for a better lock solution so I don't get ripped off again. This time I'm going with Paclock's UCS-80-250 lock which cost $117 each. I watched a 13 minute video on RU-vid detailing this lock and I am convinced if I had this lock I'd still have my B&W hitch. Please watch that video by BosnianBill and tell me what you think before I pull the trigger and buy it. Thanks

I'm a firefighter kinda like an inmate got lots of time these type pins are suprisingly easy to break and remove and don't ask me how. Do like the other feller said weld them and lock them or remove it and lock it up don't waste your money.

You’ve solved the theft problem for the hitch! I empathize because someone stole the sleeve insert for my hitch right in front of my house. Is there anything special you do to control other parts of the vehicle? I know in South Texas, criminals have stolen wheels, tires, spare tires, toolboxes, tonneau covers right off of vehicles overnight. In one case a set of thieves stole dozens of wheels off trucks on a auto dealership’s lot!

I remember that! People steel new tires here to sell them. I'm guessing it's a local business. Owl Cam is amazing as well as motion and movement detectors. I'm in the Telemetry engineering business, so I use some cool tech.
