Hi Dom had mine now for 4.1/2 to 5 years now the dsg and it’s the first and only auto I’ve ever had it’s definitely a bit quirky it doesn’t like going slow in traffic jams quite jerky sometimes I don’t really use the paddles either just like to get in it and put my foot down lol but love the car if I knew now back then I would definitely go for manual also I’ve had my ECU REPAIRED ON MY METERTRONICS £700 😪and done gearbox service would be really interested if you choose to remap the dsg great video again m8👍

Ive been really blessed to have a good spec MK1 3.2 dsg as first car since my father had it laying around and was just using his E46 M3 to get around. As it being my first car, I might have some bias towards certain aspects but having it as a cruiser on highway is honestly exceptional. Its surprisingly quick on its speed gain from around 60 mph without dropping too many gears in normal mode. In sport it is relatively high for wear it shifts so i find myself manually shifting a lot earlier than it wants. I don’t think the transmission is bad in fact its quite lovely for a daily which is something you rarely hear for a sport car, but it doesn’t understand the intentions of the driver. For me, it was almost like you had to understand the intentions of the car itself to really get that connection from it. Of course this has been my daily from the start which could just mean I have a good understanding of it’s behavior.

I'm 6 months into a MK1 3.2 DSG roadster coming from a 225 coupe. What made the DSG work for me was forcing myself to leave it in manual to understand what the hell it's doing. The 225 gives you great feedback as to what gear you're in and you never have to worry about that changing itself. The DSG was maddening at first because it does change on its own in manual at low speeds, and the exhaust flap makes gauging the combination of engine speed/car speed/selected gear harder because you can't necessarily hear it if that makes sense. Also no turbo spool, etc.. The only thing that worked for me was constantly looking down at the LCD to see what gear it was in, what RPM, and then changing gears as needed AND doing this while driving some spirited laps on a local track. I've gotten pretty adapt at getting the thing to do what I want, when I want now, but its still not as easy as the 6-speed in the 225. No choice here in the US, it was DSG or nothing for the 3.2. [also might want to reset the DSG if you haven't done so. Can help with oddities. Will be interested in hearing about a remap if you choose to go that route!]

I have a 2004 3.2 TT and mine felt the same way as yours, of course when it was bone stock ,but as you stiffen some of the chassis components and engine mounting trans mounting to shape up for the transmission tune. You must know that a transmission and software data 20 years ago wouldn’t be up-to-date hence needing software updating, (Tuning) I’ve gone with United motorsports 3.2 TT specific triple tune involving the ECU, TCU and Haldex, the car performs much more modern using mostly original internals, i had my mechatronics rebuilt and I must admit it was quite a hefty price but the car will perform much better, Along with KW V2’s, upper/ lower rear megan racing camber bars, completely rose jointed everything with absolutely no rubber underneath, front tubular arms, and I assure you, A guy with a cayman asked, “Wow, what do you have in that thing”. To the point?, well let’s just say he couldnt keep up.

Owning a 3.2 DSG I would say it’s definitely a bit awkward but that’s to expect from a almost two decade old car, I mostly drive mine in manual to get around the wrong gear issue. A dsg service improved the clunkieness on mine though.

I own three silver TT"s. 2004 180 DSG two wheel drive is a different experienced as I mentioned before to you compared to the Quattro 225. The auto box is always working accelerating smooth changes and decelerating the auto box takes control gear by gear. It does not coast along though feels like its engine breaking and slows it..but its always in the right gear to have a kick down getting that turbo boost. I don't like it in Manuel changing on the steering wheel I prefer changing Manually from the auto box lever. In the city its a better option with all those traffic lights..and it seems to pick up better than the Quattro without ringing its neck its seems more nimble in one way maybe lighter. The 225 is more engaging more go cart feeling and when revs when high I love that..going through the mountain roads..I am looking forward to work on an ABT MK1 sports line Uprated everything and that is a right hand, 5 speed short shifter, bigger turbo, bigger intercooler, bigger discs, four exhaust tips, suspension uprated too and the rear spoiler is something else..I will make a video when its done..

Hi Dom, had a couple of DSG caddy’s (I know it’s not the same as 3.2 V6) but software updates are really needed as my first caddy DSG would over heat in manual and stop working (not ideal on tight Snowdonia roads). But remapping is something I’d recommend re gearbox

My first experience of dsg was in my Skoda Fabia vrs estate. It was epic in that car until it broke, luckily still under warranty. However it didn’t put me off though. That car was a 2012 and yes sometimes the car would select a different gear than you wanted. In sport it was unbelievable. I’m currently looking for a TT 3.2 and am worried about the older box but watching this it does sound familiar!

I think your right ian, i bought the Dsg and in my mind mentally prepared for it to fail as if it does ill get it fixed then it will be ok for life haha, i like the idea of having an auto for when im being lazy or going for long drives, dont thousands of miles in my stronic s4 and loved it. just need to get some more miles on it and learn the box i think
@Chips690

@@TheParrottBros I don’t necessarily think it makes you a lazy driver, it just makes driving easier. Yes, dsg is a different driving experience, but I know I can drive better when I’ve got both hands on the wheel! I just sold my latest Skoda back to the dealer for profit, that was a 1lt dsg, and the gearbox made driving that effortlessly easy. I’ve been looking at TT’s for a while. I’d love a mint mk 1 v6 dsg, but I’m finding the main consideration on my search is ‘has the gearbox been properly looked after’! But even that didn’t matter in my brand new Skoda in 2012 as that still failed! And do I want to spend upto 10k on an 18 year old car without the peace of mind of warranty?!!!

I came straight to TTs with the auto so no manual experience. I agree that it seems a bit laggy on take off and scary in sport (1st time I used it I thought it was broken!) However, as we run it up and down from Yorkshire to Inverness pretty regularly, I'll vote for what we've got! Esp cruise control! They're definitely showing their age. I don't miss the manual in the 225 one bit though, DSG foibles aside. The DSG is not great at all at slow speeds, it's easily confused. If I need to pull out quickly I'll always knock it into sports. You get used to it when you daily it though, you alter your driving style to accommodate it all. It's one hell of a cruiser though, and that for me is where the entire setup shines. If you have a long drive, there's no other TT I'd suggest. I do love the surge rather than the violence of the turbo (Which is hilarious good fun in its own right).

I've found I can overide the "normal" mode with the paddels. So if want to go, downshift with the padel and then go. Likewise in Sport, shift up a gear as it does go too far the other way,

Agree 100% on the trans, it’s not the “smartest” in terms of finding that right gear. I find in ‘S’ it’s a lot better so I tend to use it often even if not driving aggressively. Also agree with the front end weight. I do really like the car but I’m coming from a 911 so I think I’m judging the TT a bit too critically. Great vid, thanks.

I love the DSG. For round town, stick it in Drive and it is quite chilled. I use Sport for overtaking or motorway slip roads -drop it down then back into Drive. For Manual mode, I find it better when you use the stick to change gear rather than the paddles. The gearbox is a bit jerky sometimes, and I agree that it doesn’t always find the right gear when you want it but not it’s not too bad. Would I prefer a manual, I don’t think so…but then my other car is a Mustang V8 manual so have the best of both worlds 😎…and love the sound of both…very different handling too.

I have a dsg currently, I've had a red manual in the past, I must say I loved the Manual as I love being in control. However the dsg is a different driving experience it's the only auto I've owned. I find it slightly less engaging on a run, but on back roads when you want both hands on its so so alive being a dsg. Given the choice I'd have manual everything, it's the piece of mind I think worrying when it's going to go wrong 😅

Let’s see, I’ve driven my DSG TT daily for 18 YEARS! And never had the slightest trouble with the engine or transmission. What you miss is this, The DSG Protects itself and your engine, from YOU. It will NOT let you run over redline, even in manual. It won’t let you lug the engine. It never forgets to shift into 1st. It never misses a shift, never grinds a gear. Never shifts early nor late. Never rides nor burns the clutch. In short, everything that really wears out a transmission, the DSG WON’T ALLOW. Sure, it might be costly to replace or repair if I ever need it to be repaired. But so far, it’s been less trouble than any manual I’ve owned. As far as engaged, I am a LOT more engaged with the DSG than I was with any manual. Stomping my left foot while waggling my arm about doesn’t feel like engagement, to me. It’s a distraction from steering and paying attention to the road. And in bumper to bumper traffic, it a royal pain in the rear. I LOVE being able to keep both hands on the wheel and shift up or down instantaneously as I please. I love just putting it in S when I am merging onto a highway and focus on traffic and changing lanes as the car delays shifting to redline to give me maximum performance. I love being able to flip from fuel saving drive mode into manually controlled compression braking on an off ramp, just by tapping the paddles, and then having the car put itself back into auto mode 15 seconds after I’m done controlling shifting. And I LOVE that when I am Stuck in LA traffic, that I can sip my coffee and let the car handle the tedious shifting of stop and go. Not to mention that the high torque of the 3.2 means that in Drive mode the DSG tries to use the highest gear it can to save revs, 6th gear at 35 mph, lowering engine and transmission wear while handing me 31 mpg. Nah, I am DONE with manual transmissions. The DSG is the best of manuals and automatics, with none of their shortcomings.

I find in sports it's too revy for the situation, I use manual mode and paddle shift for my excitement and sounds . But entirely agree on the auto downshift experience 🙄, I too did think a dsg tune could help ....... when I do a basic settings on ours it won't accept one part of the settings which might be an issue for me , I know the car has had a new mechatronic in the past which is a little worrying but like you I've come to the realistic assumption that it will shit itself at some point lol

Love my DSG, but not unreservedly. Coming from 30+ years of torque converter autos, I find the DSG doesn't "creep" in the same way, which can make parking in a tight spot a pain, especially if there is a slope. If I put it in neutral at a set of lights, it's a bit too slow to engage gear, and I end up revving before it does so and then lurching forward. I'll be getting a gearbox/Haldex service done soon, so that might help low speed progress. On the plus side, the lack of creep means I can hold it on the footbrake and it doesn't surge forward like a slushbox does. It does change up quickly in normal mode, but since I discovered you can use the paddles in any mode it's easy to get it in a gear that feels right. I hardly use sport as it is very aggressive, usually only when I'm joining a motorway/fast A road...or there's a Corsa next to me ! 🤣 The 3.2 has been criticised for being a bit slow and not very tuneable, but 0-60 in 6 seconds will do for me, and my friend loves it when I floor it....I have to wipe the seat down when she gets out ! 🤣 Have to agree with other comments though Dom, I think you'd be happier with a manual.

After having my DSG, that’s one thing I’ve noticed. The sport mode is extreme and the normal drive mode feels like there’s a delay between me booting it and the car realising I want a big smile. A local mechanic I know who worked at Audi for years and knows these pretty well advised me to get the gearbox map (before I even mentioned this) he said he makes it far more responsive and enjoyable. So I will be doing this at some point and see how that makes it feel, still bloody love it though!

I bought the A3 3.2 DSG, and by god did it understeer when driven at anything above 7 tenths. Unfortunately it put me off buying an Audi again. My friend later bought the 3.2 TT DSG, and that stopped him from buying an Audi again. Lovely engine, noise, and linear acceleration but I wish I had got the 225 BAM engine and remapped it instead. The gearbox wasn't too much of an issues for me, and I later had the same box in a MK7 GTI - both boxes felt fine at the time, however now I drive a ZF8 box and you do notice the difference.

Had the mk4 r32 Manual and DSG MK5. Advantages and disadvantages. I use to love giving the MK4 a blasting through the gears, but I found living with it in traffic was a nightmare and the throttle response was so light to the touch. The MK5 DSG was outdated for me a little. It use to clunk in 1st a lot, never knew what gear it wanted to be in, use to catch it out a lot. I’ve come to the conclusion that manual cars are probably the way forward when cars start getting to a certain age. I had a MK7 golf R too. Absolute lighting gear changes. Does it get worst with age ?. Probably.

@@TheParrottBros the Mk5 is probably marginally better than what you have now. It comes down to how fast you wanna drive it really. I’m guessing if you’re just a spirited driver then it’s ok, but the technology is just better in newer cars. I really dislike DSG in older cars personally. My A8 is trip tronic, I don’t get any of the gears bouncing about as it rolls to a stop, or any funny shift in revs, as you lift off the brake to set off.. but you can still catch it out. It’s just the nature of it. For me if I moved for an S3 or 3.2 would definitely be manual if the car was more than 5 years old.. depends on how many miles you’re doing to work in the traffic too..

Like your vids mate great content but your understanding of how the dsg box modes work is your issue in this vid... Your driving manual mode thinking its normal auto mode which isnt the case...that's why it's holding a higher gear when you slow down and not dropping gears...easy mistake. Switch back to auto and it will drop more gears to overtake. Sport auto mode is as you say too excessive. Manual locks it in Manual and will only drop a gear if you physically don't to prevent stalling. This vid is old but hopefully you sussed it out over longer ownership. Fyi newer dsg have kickdown through Manual mode if you push through fyi.

Surely you should only ever be one gear away from the one you need? If youre going from 6th to 2nd because you were idling around in 6th and want to suddenly blast off in 2nd you're the fault not the transmission. Come down the box earlier as you're braking and anticipate what gear you need to be in?

Dom. I did warn you a LONG time ago that the only 3.2 to have was a manual. Now you know why. :-)

@@TheParrottBros I know... and I was just being playfull. ;-) The cost of 3.2 manuals is just about to go up by another £1k! Remember, the ultimate version of the Mk1 (QS/CS) was a manual 1.8t not a DSG 3.2 VR6. (The ABT race TTs had V8s so they don't really count!) The 3.2 DSG TT is still a great car. Horses for courses possibly?

Manual is the only way to go you feel connected to the car. I had a dsg mk2 tts loved the car hated the gearbox always in to high a gear at roundabouts etc.
