These 2023 CPU Benchmarks of the AMD R7 2700 & 2700X Ryzen CPUs compare performance vs. the AMD R7 5800X3D, R7 5800X, R9 5950X, and modern upgrade options. These new benchmarks also include the Intel i7-14700K, i5-14600K, i9-14900K (and more) and AMD's R7 7700X, 7800X3D, and most of the rest of the modern lineup. Testing will help you figure out if it's worth it to upgrade the 2700 & 2700X CPUs in your AM4 board, keep using them, or move to a new LGA1700 or AM5 system.
AMD's Ryzen 2700X could often be matched (or beaten) by applying an all-core overclock to the R7 2700, something we already documented extensively back when these parts came out. If you wanted a free upgrade option for your AM4 gaming PC, it might be worth overclocking the R7 2700 to get some more performance out of it (with only the power bill to pay).

We've reviewed lots of CPUs over the years. It is absolutely insane that the 2700 and 5800X3D can go in the same socket with such a wide performance gap between them. Still cool to see it -- hopefully both Intel and AMD do more of this, although probably motherboard manufacturers aren't too happy about it! @@GamersNexus It's snappier, and actually more stable. My 1600X hated the Gskill 3200 MT/s RAM kit I bought, and would only run it at 2966 or whatever that step was. It's running full speed no problems now, and I've had no issues with the same windows install. The board is doing great! It's an ASUS Prime X370 Pro. It got multiple BIOS updates to support 5th gen Ryzen and it also got resizable BAR somewhere down the line (which I thought was only really for PCIE4?). I know I'm missing out on PCIE Gen 4 but I am not sure spending ~100-150 bucks is worth the uplift. It may make a bigger difference to me now than it would've earlier this year as I upgraded my GPU too from a GTX1080 to a 6950XT when they went on a flash sale this spring. (actually the 5800X3d was on sale for 270 USD on amazon, couldn't pass that up) All in all I really don't regret the upgrade. If 5700X3D and 5500X3D gets released next year 2024, it'd mean that AM4 had total 9 years of CPU releases on it, as the first CPU generation for AM4 is not even Ryzen, not even A12-98XX, but the A12-88XX series (Carrizo) on OEM mini PCs in 2016. In the same socket they went from 28nm 3rd gen 2/4-core Bulldozer to 3rd Zen with 3D cache. It passed LGA775 as the longest supported socket generation this year.

Similar for me. I ran a Intel 2700k @ OC 4.7ghz for about 7years. When the 2700X went on a black friday sale on Amazon in Nov 2019 I finally took the plunge. I then saw the 1600AF (2600) for $85 and started building budget B450 rigs to replace a bunch of even older systems like a i7 920 in a Media PC. Slowly built a few more for each family member and now I have a total of 9 in the house. 8 with x570 and one with b550 all with Zen3 5600G,5600,5600X,5800x,5900x. I won't run these for 7years but I plan to still run them for at least 3-4more years as they are Gen4 support with 6000 series GPU's. AM4 was a great socket to upgrade on. Never in my PC life have I swapped out CPU's so much from 1600AF,2700X,3600,3700x,5600x,5900x etc. Some rigs saw 4 CPU's as I found great used deals and sold what I had for usually the same price. @XiaOmegaX
@XiaOmegaX 7 месяцев назад
From experience, that CPU has held up almost as well as the 10700K and 9900K. 8 core doesn't suffer as much for lacking HT since it still has 8 whole cores to multi-task on, where older chips had 4. The 6 core 8th gen i5 has aged kinda gracefully too. Having 2 physical cores more than the older quads, even without HT, puts it above the 4c8t chips.
@zodwraith5745
@zodwraith5745 7 месяцев назад
Very little, and I'm assuming this is why Intel is dropping it with Arrow Lake. The small delta between the 9700k and 9900k could mostly be accounted to pure clock speed increases in most situations. Hyperthreading was a game changer when we were on 1-2 core CPUs because previously your background tasks would leak into your gaming threads. But it was never any kind of doubling of performance. A core is still a core that runs 1 thread fast or 2 threads half as fast. As we've gained more and more cores the benefits of HT have given ever diminishing returns. Especially now that we have E cores sitting on the bench waiting to be called into the game as well as AMD's plans to introduce their own version of E cores. I'm quite interested to see what Arrow Lake brings because we're at speeds now where the biggest hurdle is fighting the laws of physics. ANY way you can shorten that overall pipeline will give notable gains and this is why the X3D chips punch well above their weight class. The 9700k only had HT disabled. Arrow Lake will have it totally removed. I would imagine that could be beneficial once you're at 6-8 cores, with the only question being HOW beneficial for intense lower thread count vs detrimental in high thread count parallel tasks like rendering. But you have to remember a lot of high thread uses like rendering don't care about VCache and usually run much faster on a GPU anyways. At the very least we have some interesting architectures coming up in the next few years. Too bad we don't have the same competition in the GPU space.
@MaxIronsThird
@MaxIronsThird 7 месяцев назад
@@zodwraith5745 They're not dropping it, it's not that simple, Arrow Lake was designed with something better(Rentable Units), but isn't working well enough to ship on time, so they're waiting for Nova Lake, so they can't just go back and add HT to Arrow Lake, the chip would have to be redesigned. Games like Cyberpunk where the engine clearly uses evey single thread, will have a 20% to 30% reduction in performance, but UE5 games where only 10 threads at the most are in use, will see no difference at all. Plus APO released with RPL-R makes sure the E-Cores are also used for games, but it needs to be tuned by Intel, on a game by game basis.

9700K as well. Not just because I own one but because it’s an interesting CPU. It’s the most powerful CPU that doesn’t have HT since all of them since then have had HT. the lack of threads didn’t hurt it back then thanks to 8 cores but might now.

Just look at benchmarks with HT on vs off and there;s your 9700k review. Depends on the game, some benefit and others don't. Some claim that HT has a huge latency impact but click tto display latency is the exact same. What they are referring to is an article Intel wrote in 2017 saying that Hyperthreading does add latency, but didn't give any numbers or applications.

I think basically any cpu like that is about equal to a 8700K if it has 6 cores. or a higher core count 8700K if they have more. all 14++++++++++++++++++++++ cpus arent that diffrent with speeds, just core count at the end. sometimes they even got slower with the 5775C vs the 7700k for example ( not true in all cases but a good amount). 8700K should have a bit better single core speed but X99 has much better memory speeds.

I went from the 2700X to a 5600X 3 years ago and I had quite a massive boost of performance. Some games like the Assassins Creed went from lots of lags and stutters to silky smooth frametimes and average fps. The IPC on the 2700X cores is simply not enough. Less than 2 years into having it, I was regretting my choice. I had a RX 480 8 Gb when I did the upgrade and I'll tell you, that card still had a lot of performance left on the table. It was a huge improvement. The 2700X was a poor overclocker for me even when I used only the boost clock on all cores. I found that the 5600X wasn't keeping its boost clock and it was hardly reaching 4.4 Ghz on only 2 cores and the rest at like 3.8/4.0 so I OC'd the cpu to make it run all cores at 4.5 Ghz without touching the voltage and it's rock solid. I like my 5600X very much and it still kick asses 3 years later. I've had a lot of CPUs in the 25 years I've been building my PCs and it seems I'll get the longer utilisation off that great 5600X. What a great generation of CPUs! The transition on the same MB went smoothly but I still got a x570 (had a x470 before) used MB some time later for the newest gen of PCI.

Through many videos I've come across bench marking the R5, I've rarely seen any videos show the performance of what my CPU can do which I perceive as good news. ONE THING YOU MIGHT WANT TO MENTION: Old motherboards can start giving you random, bizzare issues that are hard to diagnose. Even though I had a B450, I opted for a new B550 so I wouldn't be dealing with any pontential issues from a 5 year old motherboard... which would eventually be a 10 year old motherboard when I'm ready for the next upgrade.

Not by much you mind and actually merely rival it. Rocket Lake got a lot flak for no good reason at the time. People fell for 10-core Comet Lake and ignoring that it throttled like crazy and also drink power at maxmium load. Comet Lake's only shinning grace is that lesser SKUs were basically cheap 8700Ks (10600K) and 9900Ks (10700K).

@@Krogoth512 11th Gen also throttled hard. And no successor should ever be slower than the predecessor in any way. Any all core load favored the 10900k. As with all modern intel chips, you need to undervolt or use water cooling if you plan on hitting any of their chips with a full CPU load these days, but the 10900k is actually easier to cool than modern intel chips.
@Krogoth512

@@legostarwarsrulez everything since Coffee Lake throttles hard if you throw a taxing load at it unless you got exotic cooling. 10900K was very infamous for this. I just find it very bizarre that Rocket Lake chips got hit by the throttling at heavy load notion while its predecessors got a pass for doing the exact same thing. Rocket Lake family are faster then their predecessors at most workloads. The problem was that Zen3 came months prior and it couldn't catch up with it and consume less power at load.
@legostarwarsrulez
@legostarwarsrulez 7 месяцев назад
@@Krogoth512 10th Gen was criticized pretty hard for being hotboxes that throttled. The reason rocket lake was vilified is because it (specifically the 11900k) managed to be even harder to cool, and draw even more power (almost 300 watts compared to 250), while still losing to the 10900k in multicore workloads. Partially since it was a backported design meant for a smaller node, that intel scrambled to fit onto 14nm since the smaller nodes weren’t ready yet. I do like that it supported AVX 512, but for normal consumers, it just never made sense to buy an 11th Gen part when 10th Gen was every bit as good, and more efficient.

Wow thanks for that vid.... I had a 2600x on the first AM4 new build, a year after 3800x, after 8 months 5900x and now running a 7800x3d and WOW that gain in 5 year !!!!

Oh hey this is my upgrade path! Went from a 2700x that I bought with a x470 Gaming-F back when it originally launched, then got a 5800x3D when it launched and plopped it into the motherboard after a BIOS update. 0 issues with using it, although it has a habit of running a bit hot (65-75-ish in gaming, will easily peg at 90C during cinebench, under a NH-D15 single fan and lax fan curve, unsure if that is a slightly bad mount/paste spread or what). Gaming performance was fine with the 2700x, I originally had a 1070 when I got that CPU playing at 1080p, later got a 1440p monitor and fps was less (obviously) but still good for the most part. Then I got the x3D and performance was noticeably better, before getting a 6900XT after my 1070 started dying. A year after I got the 6900XT I also upgraded my monitor from standard 1440p 240Hz to 3440x1440 175Hz. Considering the vast majority of my computer usage are games as opposed to productivity, the x3D chip was an amazing choice for me. Once I upgrade from AM4, I doubt I'll choose a "regular" CPU over an x3D-CPU, most of the gaming performance is just amazing (for the 6/8-cores, 12 and 16 cores are more hit or miss without tinkering apparently), and their relatively low power usage is a bonus, even if they run a bit hotter.

Download PBO2 tuner and under volt your 5790x3d -30 all core and lower the rest of the power draw l, there is a video, mine dropped to 70 degrees and bumped core clocks to 4.549-4.89 max but mostly the 4.549 all core and sometimes higher while being cooler quieter drawing less power costing less money creating less heat allowing GPU to run cooler and faster as well.

Because of how good the 5800X3D is for gaming, when it's floating around $300 it's hard to pass on it because it's worth the extra cost over something like a 2700 which I wouldn't want to use in a system for a few years for gaming. For general purpose PC use cases it's fine, but even the 5800X3D doesn't keep up with the best GPUs Nvidia put out. I got a couple when Micro Center put them down to $280 USD. And really, before I bought a 2700 or 2700X, I'd drop down 2 cores and get a 5600 which are very low cost.

Would love to see more power consumption charts like idle, low load (e.g. video playback) or gaming numbers along with the full load blender numbers.

I went from a 2700x to a 5800x3d earlier this year. While things improved, I did not quite get the big jump I was hoping for. Still rocking a 2080 RTX and a _very_ old AM4 board.

Really interresting. Got a 9700k, still pretty decent but it's my bottleneck paired with a 3080 ti, planning to upgrade to a 7800X3D, was surprised by the content dropping right on time and it looks like I wasn't expecting that much of an upgrade, thanks Steve!

i did exactly the upgrade that you covered here. over a year back I did swap my 2700 for 5800x3d. And will hold it for at least 3 more years, unless it will realy underperform.

Loving the content and "nostalgia": my 1st Ryzen cpu around 2018 was a 2700x, bought from a local Micro Center...and later to a 3700x, 5700x and now a 5800X3D. (around the same time I got the 2700x, is when I started watching Gamers Neuxs!). I am very much satisfied with AM4 for what I do with my build, and not so much in a hurry to upgrade to AM5, but it does offer a compelling proposition in performace as an upgrade path, especially with the 7800X3D cpu. Again thanks for the content. Well done!

Such a good topic to make this great analysis of! I'm on a 570x with 3800X with 2x8GB of DDR4. I'll be very happy to pick up another 2x8gb of RAM and 58003DX next year on the second hand market. Should hopefully last me till a completely new ARM build. :)
