This was awesome. I live over 400 km from Kauhava, but it would have been cool to be there. It says in the description of the video that they were normal street legal trucks that had to have a valid certificate of vehicle inspection and a valid traffic insurance (with some exceptions like a few American and hobby trucks). The distance was 1000 feet or a little over 300 meters, and the loads they were "dragging" were 60 metric tons (tractor-trailer) and 44 metric tons (semi-trailer).

7:40 - The Freightliner probably has a weaker frame since the weight limits are lower in the US than in Sweden/Finland. So to pull as much cargo as possible in the US then there are a lot of things on US trucks you don't see on the Swedish/Finnish trucks. Sliding tandems aren't common in Sweden and the lower weight limits in the US also means smaller engines that are lighter.
@griffencph-2
@griffencph-2 10 месяцев назад
What are the weight limits actually in US? I always forget. Europe generally 5 axles - 40 tons 6 axles - 48 tons 7 axles vary, I believe, 56 in Denmark 8 axles (2 trailers) 60 tons. Restricted roads in Denmark. And Finland test 9 axles, right? What is that limit?
@joneykolme
@joneykolme 10 месяцев назад
@@griffencph-2 nine axles and at least 60% of the axles with twin tyres, it's 76tons. you can have up to 12 axles, but the weight stays at 76 tons.
@matsv201
@matsv201 11 месяцев назад
2:25 it probobly have wheel spin, its not that hard to get wheel spin on a truck, even with decent load when its wet out. Most trucks (well pretty much all modern) have anti spin function. With out that, they would get wheel spin all the time. Remember, even if you have 10 tons on the driving axle, the total weight of the truck may easily be 60 tons, and that is maybe 600-700HP with ample gear reduction. So you get all those horsepowers at pretty much any speed. 4:34 Both this 1½ unit truck and the truck just before it is the same weight. Just that the gravel truck is a bit more compact. Pretty much just take the number of axles and multiply by 8 tons. (footnote, one axle can carry 10 tons, and in special cases up to 12, but typical configuration is 8 tons per axle) 5:47 that is a mid 70s volvo N series. N series use to be pretty common until trucks in general reach maximum length. Prior to say the mid 80s, in Sweden it was already than 24 meter limit. The thing is that prior to the 80s there was simply no truck that could pul a fully loaded 24 meter load. So N type truck was pretty common. When power increased the F style become more popular, and during the 90s N style truck was only produced dump trucks. Then they just stop producing it becasue the market become to small (N=hood unit, F= font cab) This trucks must been tuned as crazy, it probobly just had like 200 or 250 hp original. 8:45 the american truck does got a longer frame, so it will be more susceptible to bending. but i also kind of think that the frame is not as strong, because its only supporting the cab, and no load. Also, interesting how low the american truck is. It looks like the cab is a full meter more down to the ground. I wouldn´t say the american trucks are set up for efficiency, rather speed. Euro trucks are typically just alowed to go 80km/h (90 and 100 in some special cases).. While the speed limit for trucks in USA is mostly between 110 and 130km/h. So really quite a lot faster. A European truck will carry much more load the same distance for a given amount of fuel, but it will take more time to get there. So i would for sure say that a European truck are more efficient, but slower. This if to a degree of set by sort of relay trucking that is fairly common for long haul trucking in Europe. that is that you take one set of trailers, drive say 4½ hour north, then put the trailer in a parking, get a other set of trailer, go 4½ south. Than a other dude does the same up north, and yet a other down south., This is also often combined with RORO ferries that is very common in northern Europe So for instance if a set of trailers need to go from Say Berlin to Trondheim. They will typically not take the bridge, but rather put the trailers in a ferry terminal and have it go with very over night to be transported by a other driver in Norway. (this is not universal, there is a wide mix of trailers that go by them self and trailers that go with there tractor truck. 10:49 to give it perspective. The wooden trailer alone weigh more than the full american truck with BOTH truck and trailer combined.
@FredbullGaming
@FredbullGaming 11 месяцев назад
i think that the truck at 2:25 just killed is clutch or his transmission on the axle, at the start having wheel spin is usual yes, but once you get in the long gears, if you are loaded in a straight line the road must be really bad to get wheel spin. and the fact that at the end of the run he was revving each time he tried to accelerate, i think the cluctch was dead. I personnaly owned a v8 scania so yeah i know that truck. other possibility , it s well known on the scanias (less with last models with traction control)that the the axle connecting the wheel to the differential is pretty fragile and may be broken if tortured.

That Volvo at 4:56 is awesome. It has a big advantage over the others: the truck itself is heavily loaded, which is good for grip. It doesn't matter anymore that it is also hauling some 30 tons of logs, grip will be there. Compared to the first Scania having loads of wheelspin, the Volvo did a better job. Also gear ratios and having an automatic or not will make a big difference in this drag race. Lots of Scania V8's here, really nice :)

Looked like a Mack cabover in the background too, American trucks do sell in Europe but they’re not always an everyday sight. The Kenworth K100 series was popular in the 1980s. In the UK many US trucks end up as wreckers or for very heavy haulage loads of 100 tons or more.
@griffencph-2
@griffencph-2 10 месяцев назад
The few american trucks I see, are mostly show trucks (I live in Denmark). Because og our length restrictions, longhoods are only good for heavy loads, since you need a shorter semi. We can only be 16.5 meters (just over 54 feet) end-to-end for semi setup. Truck and full trailer can be 18.75 m (61f 6i). Doubles 25.25 m (82f10i).

As others have said some of these cabs have there own suspension in relation to the chassis to give the driver a smoother ride. That 'rocking' can also be because of the power these things have. These trucks are 'Rolling Coal' so that improves torque but the horse power levels mean there is a huge amount of torque being generated. The combination of that and the inline layout of the engine/chassis creates an effect called Torque Twist where the whole truck twists sometimes actually lifting a front wheel off the ground. An Extreme example of this is 'Truck and Tractor Pulling'. Those beasts generate enough torque to literally Snap chassis rails.
@thomasdane1781
@thomasdane1781 5 месяцев назад
also.. the sound, oh yes, it just makes you warm to the skin.. it's because the trucks are born with a catalytic filter on the the exhaust to remove some exhaust particles.. if they remove it, they get that cool sound

I'm familiar with the event done here in Quebec called "Rodeo du Camion" which you can search videos of, if you haven't already seen them before, but it's basically the same concept of drag races with loaded trucks in a small town. @TheRtm68
@TheRtm68 6 месяцев назад
No no sorry, you are not completely right, the reason why many get the tuning from the Greece is because of stock the trucks are limited of 90km/h, with our digital electronic tacho system will registratie everything on the truck! Every truck garage is not allowed to mess with this electronic because they need to registratie as well what they are doing! So when they going to Greece they get rid of the speed limiter, because the Greece don’t give about laws and justice! Straight pipes is also not good for you’re horse power you will loose around 50till 75horsepower! Yes you can chiptuning the truck, but the problem is that the truck can taken away from you because it’s not roadworthy anymore, and the fines it wil cost can lead to the end of the company! For tuning we don’t need Greece the Scandinavian people knows the best but like in every country you have specialist! My experians is 35years of trucking trough whole Europe and beyond, and personally I don’t like those new trucks with Al that electronic shit what is fragile, and dousn’t work properly when the truck is one year or older!

The Scania has a performance of 960hp and for racing probably more.

There is different classes, semis and full trailer, 48tn / 60tn. With that b-link/double semi can partisipate on that bigger class. Also, under 13.5l and over 13.5l engines.

I took my truck+Trailer licence on one of those V8 Scanias with 700 hp and an unloaded trailer. It was one of the most uncomfortable rides I've ever had. It kicked like a frikkin mule then took 5 seconds to shift gears before kicking my ass again...rinse and repeat. It's probably really nice when hauling something else then sailboat fuel around, but unloaded it was far from nice.

Wheel spin is quite a problem even when fully loaded. You can get wheel spin when pulling an empty trailer upto 10th gear, 6-7th when fully loaded (44T) with 480BHP. It's funny pulling away from the lights when the trailer's empty as there's usually a queue of cars trying to get past you, but they're mostly left behind. Well, until you get to 56MPH.

That orange Volvo @5:12 will be my truck to put at a busy traffic light in my city. Imagine all the windows almost shattering when a VW-Golf with a loud pipe and packed with unknown youts are loughing at that old Volvo. They must be very scared when they see that old beast producing black smoke and see it approaching in the rear mirror while waiting at the next traffic light.

Sure in Scandinavia. Some combinations are unusual in other European countries because of the 40t limit. Even with a regular truck you have problems with wheelspin. Especially on wet roads and in sharp bends. They don't have traction control for nothing. But you should turn it off on steep inclines on bad ground.
