Sorry was a gentle, slow burner of a comedy. He was forever apologising. Timothy Lumsden became a nickname for anyone who was still living with their parents when they should have left home. I think he was supposed to be around 40. Mother refused to let him grow up and leave home and whenever he got himself a girlfriend mother would do everything in her power to ruin the relationship and stop him from leaving. His sister had managed to leave home and get married, but then, she wasn't Mummy's little boy. Father was a fabulous character. He didn't say much, but when he did, it was usually pretty good. "Language, Timothy" became a well used catch phrase.

This was meant to be a vehicle for Ronnie Corbett, but Barbara Lott was probably the star of the show. The setting was very middle-class and unthreatening, like many British sitcoms of the time. It gave us the classic catchphrase: "Language Timothy!", uttered by the hen-pecked father whenever anything vaguely coarse was said by Timothy.

I love "Sorry". There was always the hope that one day, Timothy would escape the clutches of his overbearing mother. The episodes revolved around his efforts to escape and his mothers efforts to defeat any escape. A theme running through each episode is the food. Mother will not waste any food and serves up gruesome concoctions made from old leftovers.

Through the length of a comedy series the audience builds a familiarity and affection for the characters, which is not always demonstrated using clips.Watching these shows brings me nostalgic warmth as well lots of laughter. Thanks for posting, wish you happiness in your adopted home. In British comedies a recurring theme is the protagonist being trapped in a situation unable to free himself from an emotional dependence.

To answer your question Felipe, a show like this wouldn't be made today (but I think you probably knew that!). The last attempt at a culturally mainstream, traditional family-oriented British sit-com was probably My Family, which ended I think in the mid-00s. British culture, at least on television, is more diffused than it was when Sorry! was first made - then there were only three TV channels, of which one (BBC2) was deemed specialist, non-mainstream and not particularly geared to a family audience.

It's the same with any good comedy; the writing, the characters and the actors have to come together to produce this kind of gold. If any one of these 3 is missing then it flops.
