Kathleen Lynch from the University of Cincinnati's Classics Department is back to look at more of Assasin's Creed Odyssey. Today we check out the Theater of Dionysus and the Athenian Agora. NOTE: Uploads of parts 1 and 2 of this video were unfortunately cut-off suddenly at the end. The complete version combines both videos and the missing footage.

They admit it themselves that they take liberties with things if it makes the game look a bit better or something exciting can be used in the story that actually takes place in another time period. The game has huge fantasy elements so a few historically inaccuracies shouldn't be something to get worked up about. During black flag, when you're out of the animus as a employee at the abstergo entertainment studio, even though it's not the same thing as ubisoft game studio I think it gives a glimpse into how things get done in real life in regards to making a historical game or film. The company will balance realism and inaccuracies/fantasy to make the product more appealing to the consumer.
@Lucifronz
@Lucifronz 3 года назад
Because variety is the spice of life. Sometimes they just choose what they think looks nicer instead of what's most accurate. They have a historical tour you can go through as a bonus, separate game mode, where you can get more accurate information on the characters in the game and their real roles in life, as well as the places you visit. I don't know if it explains any of the inaccurate elements and why they're fictionalized, probably not, but it's a nice way to get some understanding and culture of ancient Greece if the game's inaccuracies bothered you at all.

the reason everything is so accurate is because they literally went over there with top of the line Kimbal surveying equipment and painstakingly laser scanned the entire area, this did this as well in several other cities in which Ubisoft games have occurred more notably France and they've offered to help with the reconstruction of Notre Dame after the fire because they have the most detailed survey of the buildings because they wanted a 100% copy in game. not all the decorations are 100% accurate though because they did take SOME creative liberties to make it more appealing in game.
@TownianScout
@TownianScout 3 года назад
That’s really cool I didn’t know that they did that. That might also explain why some details like the switch back leading to the Parthenon was used (the Roman period path) as opposed to the direct hill that would have been there during the Peloponnesian war.
@ToeCutter454
@ToeCutter454 3 года назад
@@TownianScout quite likely since it would have required a bit of extra work to reconstruct rather than simply using the data collected to make it simpler to cut some costs in the games development. i only just started playing Assassin's Creed since Odyssey but now i do plan on playing all the others in the series. another detail in the game they've incorporated is a "history mode" that has a pathed quest to follow and explore as they show you various artifacts and tell you the stories behind a lot of the city. they really went all out and in depth with not just amazing game play but also with history and education. while they're not the only ones to add historical/mythical figures to games another one that stands out is the Final Fantasy series, many of them use Greek/Roman/Norse/Japanese/Middle East gods and accounts throughout in the form of bosses, mobs or locations and many of them are quite intertwined with the accounts from the stories of old. much creative liberties are taken however within the Final Fantasy series but they do try to stay within the bounds of what the characters were depicted like in the stories. it's quite unique and i think highly overlooked by many who play the game simply for the story and never look at it any closer, which i won't argue their story telling is some of the best and it really pulls emotions out of you as you get attached to the characters on their journey.

A lot of it just down to costs. A game still has to ship, and if you can save on data to ship and production time by swapping out detail sculptures and paintings (like the deeds of heracles on the Athens temple that they subbed in), why wouldn't you? A lot of people wouldn't even notice the difference.

It's really quite amazing how much effort was put into reconstructing ancient Greece. Of course, there are the embellishments, and a couple missing details, but on the whole there is and perhaps never will be anything like it. It's too bad that after Origins and Odyssey there is none of the archeological history really offered in Valhalla, although I do find it to be a more fun game in its own ways.

Not that it makes a difference but the year this game took place is probably 429 BCE. There are a couple of other event indicators most notably the death of Pericles and the Athenian plague. Though the plague came in 430 BCE the game plays it like it was relatively quick that the plague came and killed Pericles and Kleon took over. Edit: (So after actually continuing to play the game which I just now completed I was surprised to be at the battle of Amphipolis where SPOILER the death of Brasidas and Cleon occurred. This of course took place I believe in 422 BCE so this game pretty much jumps all over condensing the timeline into very brief periods or...traveling takes a lot longer than it seems)

A lot of the incorrect details are due to reused assets as well, because they needed to have certain designs repeated across the map. It wouldn't be practical on a labor or performance level to create bespoke assets to match all of the details perfectly, hence the less detailed pots and stuff. They also just made some anachronistic changes for the purposes of showing off their idealized version and having cool graphics.

Pots - shapes vs decorations - I think it's kind of a... organic creative decision? Or maybe even unconscious? Like, the artists were shown the reference images, and they noticed the shapes, of course, but the decorations probably weren't that clear on those reference images, and the artists didn't realize there's cathegories of those decorations and pairings of which are appropriate to what shapes, so they just drew on one big uncathegorized pool of "this is the style of decorations greeks used". Or now that I think about it a bit more and saw the picture you shown, more likely a budget decision. Copypasting some generic already-made decorations into the texture is much quicker, simpler and cheaper than trying to source and/or recreate and/or arrange an actual painting-like scene for each and every one of those. And having just a few scenes repeating a lot would become very obvious to players very fast.
