Annular Wing Test Flight

First test flight of my annular wing prototype at the University of Sydney. Powered by two angled (at 20 degrees from axial) 30mm electric ducted fans. Throttle only control, yaw, pitch and roll control to be added later.
Flights were stable though the wing had more drag than I would have liked :S.

The wing has a symmetric aerofoil profile on it. Flying at an angle of attack, it generates lift just like any other wing.

I see how it generates lift, let’s see you steer it.
@Meatball2022
@Meatball2022 3 года назад
Why the rotation though? Wouldn’t vertical stability be the only possible way to control the flight? I used to make these out of paper, and the bottom had a quasi tail triangle shape that would keep it upright. That also allows the top and bottom of the circle to have the appropriate lift design. In yours with the spin, you’re getting upwards force from the top, but downwards force from the bottom.
@hadhamalnam
@hadhamalnam 3 года назад
@@dmc8078 I still don't understand how it generates lift, since its circular and spinning, if it had the same profile all the way around wouldn't the lift vectors all cancel each other out? And if it does generate directional lift, shouldn't spinning the wing also spin the lift vector?

@@MrAmeame Ring wings pop up from time to time claiming to solve the problem of induced drag. If you believe induced drag is a result of wing tip vortices, that is a sensible thing to believe. Some Kite flyers use circular kites, similar to this. They are called "Circoflex". Flex, because they are light and so, flexible. Their structure is just a carbon tube, and the lifting area is just a circular canvas attached to the carbon tube. The canvas is shaped by an adjustable lace at the rear part, a bit smaller than the canvas. So the air inside the loop is at higher presssure and maintains shape and some rigidity. The rope is attached to the center of a "star" of strings to the front end of the canvas. in fact, the "center" is lower than the geometrical center to ensure the stability, helped by some light weight fitted to one point of the low part of the canvas. They fly rather well, except if the wind is rather strong and turbulent.

@@joce0993 if the airfoil is circularly symmetrical then when the AOA is increased on one side, it will be decreased by the same amount on the other side equalizing lift. Gravity wins. It would be like having a biplane with one airfoil inverted. As lift is increased on one wing it will be decreased on the other wing regardless of AOA if lift is maintained on one airfoil. The exception would be increasing the AOA to the point of a dual stall where neither airfoil is providing lift. Gravity wins. Not considering thrust. If there's enough thrust no airfoil is needed and you then have a rocket!

It can clearly hover but can it be held onto a structure so that it can power some kind of aircraft

Symmetric airfoils generate the same amount of lift when reflected over their chord line. Which is what happens here as the whole thing rotates. An ordinary airfoil would start producing downforce when reflected, unless the angle of attack is very high (to the point of stall).

Remember wide open spaces are not your friend when test flying new aircraft. Make sure u crash it at least 10 times to test durability before even turning the motors on. Anyway love the design!

That is sick you guys 🤘🏽 do you have a reverse just to see what it would do ? And seems like with the spin at a 45 degree works really well how about bumping it up to 55 degree spin throw might go far there

I kept expecting it to just fly right through those trees like they weren't there. I guess there is a learning curve on this one.
