I love that you said our hobbies don’t have to be a hustle or make us money! I feel the exact same way. It takes the pressure off

Yes, besides when you make your hobby a job it’s way less fun!

I used to paint as a hobby, as soon as people started telling me I should sell my painting I lost interest

😆 I TOTALLY appreciate "joy without practical justification!" I can't tell you how often I have encountered people wanting to discard (fill in blank here) because it didn't generate money. I love that! Joy Without Practical Justification! I think I will have to print that up and put it in my sewing room! LOVE this video!

I liked the split screen so we could get a good full figure look at the outfit as you were talking about it. Good job.

Thank you for saying our hobbies don’t have to be a hustle. I love to make corsets, not costumes, not clothes, just corsets and other victorian underwear. It gives me pleasure. No really, I can’t sell them. I’ve tried, for years. No Go - and it sucked the joy out of it.

I’ve turned hobbies into jobs before and I know that if I do that, I gotta get another hobby. I’d rather just keep costuming as fun for now! And corset making can be really fun (and challenging)

Omg the hip measurement thing! Definitely going to give the yardstick thing a go. My high hip measurement is bigger than my low hip measurement because I have a post baby apron belly. So my belly being there makes the high hip a bigger measurement than my low hip, especially because I have a flat arse. Wide hips, but a flat arse. So I tend to use the biggest measurement- ie, my high hip. And make sure that I get from my waist to my high hip at the appropriate point. I can make the low hip point even larger (and I usually do, in order to make things look nice and hourglass-y), but it’s really important for me to remember to accommodate my belly. I’ve made that mistake before, especially as I have quite a small waist in proportion to the rest of my body, and my belly protrusion starts below my waist. So if I just go off my wait and my low hip measurement, then there’s no room for my belly at the high hip. I had to completely redraft that skirt, and try to come up with a low hip measurement that would be proportionally bigger than my high hip, because I was using an old drafting manual, and it was just really difficult. That yardstick trick will make my life SO much easier, thank you!

Yeah, it took me forever to realize that little trick and once I did I was like “oh, that’s why that didn’t fit right!” We all gotta learn how to fit our unique bodies and find what works

I really appreciated you saying how a hobby doesn't have to be a hustle! I am constantly telling my husband that spending money gardening on our Vicarage garden as it brings him joy even though it isn't ours and we will move away for his job eventually. I just need to tell myself that more often about my historical sewing! Luckily I have an old friend who is happy to receive the victorian/Regency/tudor dresses I make!! Also as a parent to be soon, it's great to see how to balance life well. You are an inspiration and a life goal!!

The white fabrics were SO relatable! I have the box that the combination printer/copier/scanner came in full of white mockup fabric. And then there's more. :D

_Tip for scraps, cabbage and coleslaw_ - make Zafu-style meditation pillows. Darn things have box pleated sides so they can eat allot of fiber. Little one gets to have her own floor cushion she can push around. You get something you can kneel on if you have to cut on the floor. And you can always give them as gifts. Great video. Well done. Suggestion. Figure out how to work your historical into your daily. That's too much handwork to leave in a closet. Let them see sunlight. Besides - leggings and tee's look rocking when you add a Spencer jacket. Yay for CoSy. Safe travel there. Safe travel back. And much fun in between. - Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown

You’ve made so many pretty ensembles~. Yeah, the number of times people have leaned over to something I spent hours or days making and hit me with the ‘you could sell that’ and my heart sinks every time. It makes me feel almost guilty, so it’s nice to hear your thoughts. Makes me skip out, when going certain places, on my more historically inspired clothes because as happy as I am and pretty I feel, all (some) people see is dollar signs. But it’s alright.

I’m still working on it. I loved this. Learning more about you. I’ll see you at the next event even if I’m still a muggle. I need to register for the retreat.

Yes! Costumes are almost always optional at events. I won't be at the retreat but I'll probably go to the railroad museum event

Hi Dixie! I am a young seamstress/fashion historian in the making. I live in the DSW area and my mom recently reached out to the costumers guild, and figuring out how to join, I was looking for the link to the guild in the description and did not find it. Maybe I'm just not seeing it or something, but could you maybe reply to this with the link? Thanks so much!
