My long-promised bonus video for making Jo March's bonnet is finally here. I used a new technique to form the shape of this bonnet and mostly used scraps for the decorations.

Your wee bonnet is so absolutely adorable. It makes me want to get out my millinery supplies.

I love a bit of millinery. I love the brown and the red. Somehow it's a very sensible Jo choice. I once saw a Victorian source refer to brown as 'the only truly serviceable colour' so I think it's perfect.

I'm glad you made a separate video for the hat. I was so busy looking at the dress in the last video that I didn't really look at the hat. Well done!

It's the perfect accessory! I agree that the contrast works really well and it's a very flattering hat!

I love it, and this is also very helpful to me, since I'm working on a mid-to-late 1860s ensemble. So, thanks!

I really like the velvet ruffle under the brim, although it seems to get lost a little with all the other decorations. Perhaps a second layer of the same underneath? It would also bulk up the hat a little (one of your own critiques). I was quite surprised at how the brown and red worked together myself. I really liked the bias silk detailing. The different directions of the weave really make it stand out, even though it is the same fabric.

It is a little thin, I could’ve used bigger stitches on the velvet to make it chunkier-looking. I think the brown works because the red threads in it almost match the ribbon. Thanks!

Yes. As a lover of Little Women from childhood, I think you nailed it! Perhaps the bonnet does need to be a little bigger, as you said, but it's such a confection.. 😍🥰❤ And not too fussy, which Jo wouldn't have liked.

Thank you, I knew I didn’t want it to be too floofy with weathers or flowers or anything

I love the whole outfit and think the bonnet works very nicely with it for all that it's size might relegate it to a few years later. Plus, you could always use it as the excuse for making that 1870's outfit to wear with it.
@DixieDIY
@DixieDIY Год назад
That’s as good an excuse as any, right!? Thanks 😊

Apparently you can make hat blocks out of cardboard wire and plaster of Paris. I've used a poupee head to block before and it turned out well. If you do hat projects in the future.

Thanks! Do you mean the gray and pink dress I wore in the beginning of the video? I made that using a McCalls pattern that I hacked up so much it barely resembles the original design. The fabric is an Indian block print cotton.
