ANTEPES MUSCLE RUNNER: TRAINING SHOE THINKS 🤔 IT’S A SPIKE - GREAT FOR SPRINTERS, JUMPERS & RUNNERS

I have been testing the new Antepes Muscle Runners. These shoes are different. They are designed to produce a forefoot strike and are shaped much more like a track spike than a running shoe. Hence they make a great shoe for sprinters, jumpers and hurdlers (and team sport players) looking for a go-virtually anywhere intermediate option between trainers and spikes.
These shoes have the added advantage that you can use them on the road (and even trails). Somewhat obviously you could not do downhill sprints on concrete in your spikes but you can in the Muscle Runners. They have many innovative features - two being the negative heel gain and the carbon-fibre forefoot plate. They really do energise your sprinting and drilling.
I do really recommend them - as do two members of my training group, Leigh and Abraham, they’ve been using them for months.

Great review and the shoes look very interesting and are somewhat cheaper (150,- euros) than other brand shoes with carbon plate sole. Because of achilles problems I do my track running wearing Nike Zoom Fly 5. I even use them for long jumping......

Many thanks … I think the ANTEPES have a re use for training - you can, as I say in the video, use them for off track running and plyos. The two athletes in my group trialling them really do seem to be getting a lot out of them and like you are jumping in them as well (well you are using your Nike’s). Achilles issues/problems have to be managed and wearing the “right” shoes is important i that respect. Isometric and eccentric work as you will no doubt be aware of can do much to alleviate issues.

Excellent review as always JS. What about athletes who has had Achilles tendon surgery and or is with tendon inflammation issues? Also - is this shoe for all-weather & all surface training? With the grip material (ankle area, and underneath the front shoe) - How does it differ to wearing spike shoes.

As with spikes and Achilles issues I’d be wary but under normal circumstances you’d be fine. You adapt to the shoes as you would be spikes. It’s about adapting to the shoes … they should ease the transition between trainers and spikes. I used them on hard surfaces … not yet tried in the wet. They have good grip on concrete. It’s v different to running in trainers…. You get a really firm push. Vis a vis spikes - they are thicker at the forefoot and they lack some of the feel of a spike.

Would you be worried about overloading your achilles tendons in these shoes?

I've had no trouble and neither have the other two have been using them (over a much longer period than myself) re Achilles. I'd suggest that if you are a sprinter/hurdler/jumper that you will be better conditioned for the use of a such a shoe. Sometimes when I wear them I'll admit they can be a bit "too much" in terms of energy return and my older legs might not be ready for the energy return. In these scenarios I've been reducing the use or going back to "normal" trainers for the session.

What do you think about longterm use will the foot be weaker becaus off the power/carbon from the shoes. The foot relax more ?
@Johnshepherdtrackcoach
@Johnshepherdtrackcoach Месяц назад
I'd not say so. The athletes who have been using them longer than me have not reported this, nor have I seen them to be losing power. What I think will more likely happen is that there will be an increased ability to express power, due to the shoes being more responsive. Think of it as being like a plyo programme - the results will reduce over time but there will be improvements and gains that still continue and benefit jumping/sprinting. And the leg structures will be stronger and more reactive in consequence. The Muscle Runners will add a further dimension to the training arsenal. Also they need energy to run in and sometimes this can be a little too much of a requirement (at least I have found so)... so, I don't think the foot will relax .. yes, you will get more used to the response, but it is more like running in spikes and thus the demands are greater. Hope this helps.

Do let us know how you get on with the shoes. The guys in the group really do benefit from them. This blog post may be of interest. antepes.com/blogs/run-on-muscle/antepes-sprint-workout-1-10-warm-up-drills
