Worrying about your hearts health is probably one of the most common traits of someone suffering from health anxiety. The very first panic attack often shows itself with symptoms like a racing and pounding heart, chest tightness, shortness of breath, dizziness or numbness on the left side of the body. As nobody ever really expects their first panic attack we often end up believing that there must be something wrong with our heart. These worries don’t just stop after a panic attack and often consumes our entire life. We develop a real anxiety disorder, health anxiety. This anxiety creates so much tension and stress and with that we may notice that our blood pressure is higher then it used to be and for some A LOT higher. These results only confirm our initial worry and we may end up convincing ourselves that something has to be wrong with us. We dig ourselves deeper and deeper into frightening scenarios which lead to more symptoms and even higher readings.
This video is going to explain this process in more detail and hopefully take away some of your worries and give you some reassurance so that you can finally move on to your anxiety recovery journey.

Your description is exactly what I go through. Anxiety attacks that make my chest, back, shoulders, etc. tighten to the point my chest starts to hurt, which causes more anxiety, so I check my BP and my fears are confirmed, causing more anxiety. It's not a death sentence. I've been dealing with chronic anxiety for several years now and with a cleaner diet and hydration mine is 116/74. Even on 4 hours of sleep. The tachycardia from the adrenaline/cortisol holding you hostage is the real pita. You just have to keep living no matter what life is throwing at you.

The best advice I can give is create a new life cause our old ones are what got us here. I've heard anxiety symptoms described like a shook up snowglobe you just gotta allow it to settle or burn itself off as frustrating as it can be. Take inventory of your thought patterns, relationships, work, your home environment, your habits, whatever applies in your life and start going after what you're wanting one by one. The crappy feelings drop off a little at a time.

I'm here because I just took my bp 7 times in a row and got different (high) numbers everytime. This is after days of heart palpitations, dizziness and shortness of breath. I've had diagnosed Anxiety disorder for 20 years, but I still fall into this trap, and this year has been a really bad one for me. I was also diagnosed with clinical depression 26 years ago, and I always tell people that out of the two of them, I'd sooner deal with the depression. This may seem odd to people, but anxiety is incredibly hard to deal with. Anxiety is hyper alert levels of never ending, wholehearted panic, whereas depression is not being able to get out of bed or achieve anything. For me, I'd rather be struggling to get out of bed lol. Simplistic examples, but I'm sure anyone reading this knows what I mean. Thank you for this video. Its brought me back down to earth again. I think this time I might have been suffering from a sustained panic attack that's actually been going on for a couple of weeks. This illness never fails to spring different surprises on me. Just when I think I've got a handle on it, it throws another curve ball. People that have never had it can never understand, no matter how much they want to. That's why people like you are so vital. Thank you, so much, again!!! I'm putting my blood pressure monitor away!!!
@charlotteq8460
@charlotteq8460 3 года назад
Also, I'll just add that having blood pressure taken in a doctors office is the WORST for people that suffer from health anxiety. For me, I'm already hyper stressed from even BEING there. I HATE doctors offices. So when they whip out that cuff, I'm almost hyperventilating. Doesn't make for good readings. You just have to hope that you have a doctor that understands....which hasn't always been the case for me!!! I had one four years ago that referred me immediately to a cardiologist, which just sent me absolutely through the roof. I had numerous tests that took about three months to fully complete, and by the end of it I was very, very ill with depression and anxiety and ended up on Lithium, Quetiapine, Ativan and an SSRI that I can't recall because I've been on all of them lol. Only for the cardiologist to ultimately tell me "there's nothing wrong with your heart, sunshine"!! So all that simply because my primary doctor overreacted and didn't take my severe anxiety into account. It took me 8 months to recover and start to be able to come off some of those anxiety/depression meds. I was an absolute basket case. This cemented my belief that doctors can't be trusted, and now I try and actively avoid them. Hence me taking my own blood pressure. I tell you...Its a never ending cycle, this crappy disorder!!!

Usually I’ve noticed when I get anxiety attacks my oxygen levels go up to 99. I tested my BP and it was high 160/95. That made me panic more. I completely agree with the fact that I need to trust my body again and know that everything is fine (even though I've heard that multiple times from Drs) I feel like anxiety definitely leaves us with PTSD and it is hard to re-train your head again to the point where you're not constantly doubting. I just recently realized that it is all in my head and that instead of using my BP monitor I need to exercise more and do stress management. Everything else just adds to the anxiety and makes it worse, it's a vicious circle we need to get out off.

I really don't know why they use things like Zoloft (or any SSRI) for people with anxiety on top of depression. My daughter recently had her first major anxiety attack and they stuck her on citalopram. BIG mistake. It sent her through the roof. We went back to the doctors, and he took one look at her and changed her to Amitriptyline. An oldie, but a goodie. It had an almost instantaneous calming effect on her, and she's been improving ever since. If you're not having luck with Zoloft, ask them about tricyclic meds. I hope you're feeling better by now, however!!! Its a hard road, but you'll get there!!!

Not surprisingly, the American Heart Association is most likely the main culprit behind people fears over BP. The 120/80 required number is more a 'gift' to big pharma and never-ending return visits to your doctor; than reality. As a technician who repaired automatic BP machines back in the 1970's; my BP was usually 145/95 and would spike occasionally to 190/100. I never took (practically enforced) BP medications and I've outlived all my co-workers who did take the BP meds. The BP meds were a 'gateway' drug that lead them to other symptoms and still more preventive medicines.

I've had several EKG's, chest scans and ultrasounds that all have normal/excellent results. Even though I eat a low sodium diet with plenty of plants and grains my bp reads high every time I measure it. (150/88). I've concluded that I have health anxiety that I've probably developed from witnessing many of my elders pass on from cardiologist's disease. Plus the added stress from being a full time caregiver contributes to my high readings.

Sister I know exactly what you are going through. Had everything done lit up from head to toe and each time everything was good. My health anxiety comes from the same having family members whom passed from cardio problems but most came from living an unhealthy life. I dont drink smoke and never done any drugs and strive to eat healthy. still when I see those numbers I go into flip mode which makes it worst. One thing I learned from a doctor is never trust the numbers. You could be healthy as a horse and get different readings every time. It's all about your lifestyle and if you are taking care of yourself the worry should cease because that's what's causing the blood pressure to spike. I will you well sister and we all will triumph together.

This is true! I forget the bottom number, but my blood pressure was 150ish. I was put on Amlodipine 5mg. I began cardio and almost cut out all salt! A few days later, I felt winded and dizzy. I kept testing my blood pressure with my monitor. The cuff was short, so it didn’t fit my arm. My primary doctor (actually practitioner) advised me to place it on my wrist. One evening, it said 90! I thought it was a mistake. I did it again and it had 156. This lasted for a few days. I tested ALL THE TIME! I went to a cardiologist being paranoid. A nurse took my pressure. She looked at me like I was crazy! The reading was 120 over 80. The main cardiologist came in and was borderline rude! I explained my device was giving high readings and my primary doctor had me at 150 or a little higher. He asked, “Is it a practitioner or a real doctor?😂” I advised him, “Practitioner.” He said, “Go get a real doctor!” When I got back home, I ran it again (on my wrist). It had 156! That device almost killed me! That night when it read 90 probably was the only time it was accurate! I did make changes to my diet after my practitioner read 150. I didn’t do like most people and eat harmful food and still take the medication. I never understood that! My goal was to get off the medication! My pressure got extremely LOW! My device kept giving false high readings! This video is so true! Don’t keep testing like a mad man! Make good decisions in your diet and weight! Limit food you eat out! Trust me! Your blood pressure and paranoia will decrease! Most try holding on to a bad diet while taking the medication! That’s just dumb!

Today I've been to the doctor to find a treatment of what I feel is "Pneumonia". The doctor said my heart is palpiting fast and decided to take my BP. I already told her that I have anxiety and trauma about taking BP's in a doctor's office. But she taken it anyway so my anxiety got the best of it like I wasn't there anymore. When I found out the reading was 160/100. I could feel all tingling inside my body, my heart was pounding fast, my face turned red, I couldn't relax anymore. The doctor said I needed to do ECG and x-ray and after that I will do a 2nd BP again. After I did the ECG and x-ray, I go back to the doctor for 2nd BP test. I said to the doctor that I am not comfortable in the office and I rather take my BP elsewhere. Which she agree and a nurse assisted me to take my BP. I found a not too perfect spot but a great way to distract me from taking my BP. So when its done, I asked the nurse what's the reading? She said it's normal sir, 120/90. You wouldn't believed how happy I am after hearing that. Just like burst to tears. But surely I learned what can I do to maintain my BP. And my advice to my fellow anxiety carriers is. Seek for help if you must. Don't let it carry on your own, because you are not alone. Once you've overcome it, it changes everything. Praying for you all out there. Be strong!!

So I was actually just diagnosed with this literally today. I’ve dealt with severe anxiety for years. One thing I do wanna add though, is if you are having other symptoms as well as anxiety that make no sense or are not correlated to anxiety then you probably should talk to your doctor or a doctor that you trust. I’m in the process of dealing with either a chronic illness or a genetic illness and for years, no one believe me. And for years, I actually did not have any symptoms, except for like some strange things. I’m actually getting a genetic test for Ehlers Danlos syndrome and I am almost positive. This is what I have because I have every symptom. I didn’t even have to do the test for the hypermobility because it was something that I already had in childhood. Basically, it is a genetic disorder, but I was told my whole life that I was over exaggerating, or I was making things up. After I got pregnant for my daughter, my health took a turn for the worse that was so scary that my health anxiety basically started. It got so severe that I have been hospitalized eight times this year alone. The reason why I even say anything is because if your body is telling you, there is something wrong listen to it. Be honest with your doctor. I literally just went to the doctors office to figure out if my blood pressure issue was related to my collagen issue, or if it was related to something else. I’m on a lot of medication’s that could make my blood pressure higher so basically he had to take my blood pressure multiple times in different states of anxiety. What happens in this disorder he told me is that basically my blood pressure is rising because of my anxiety. I don’t have any other causes that would make my blood pressure high and my blood pressure went from 142/98. two, 115/70. I actually think a lot of my blood pressure issues are 100% related to stress but if they had just told me I was stressed and had given me a diagnosis of this. It would not have helped my health anxiety. My doctor literally said that we need to find out what’s going on so that you can sleep at night. Because I haven’t been able to sleep pretty much my entire life, and it is taking a toll on my body. I also had no idea what EDS was until it was brought up by my rheumatologist. But I’m not gonna lie the minute. I was validated that something was going on. A lot of my anxiety went down. I’m still in the process and thinking about my health, and the fact that I actually might not be able to be alive for as long as I thought I was going to has created some thing that is incredibly painful and hard to deal with. Also, I am genetically just a pond for something like this, my dad and everyone on that side has hypertension and diabetes. I do agree with trying not to ruminate though. That does nothing for me, but I think they’re still needs to be some sort of validation if there’s more than just this problem alone. One of the things I’ve noticed having a issue with my collagen is, there are multiple parts of my body that are affected. My heart actually wasn’t affected until recently, but I believe because my body has just been working too hard. I’ve always had anxiety as well like as a child I had issues that were similar, but they just didn’t get to the point where I would pass out .

I recently been to the doctor twice for this specific reason and pretty much said I was fine and drink more water. I experienced an anxiety attack like this today at work. I had my Apple Watch on and I noticed my heart rate was elevated. I quickly thought “oh no not again,” I tried to gain my composure and reaffirm myself everything was ok, yet I still kept telling myself, what if there’s really something wrong with me? It really is a terrible sensation to go through and wouldn’t wish it upon no one. If you’re dealing with this, please analyze your thoughts and emotions. Nice to see you guys online again. Totally agree with all you said about the annual pass that we haven’t renewed ours for last year or so because of the reservation system. We was hoping they’ll sort that out but I’m afraid we’re not going anymore. We go with two other families. There is 12 of us in total and that is 12 less sales they going to get a year. I hope the greed is worth it.

This is me every time I measure my blood pressure. I'm not contented whenever I see my blood pressure reading around 130/80-140/80 and believe me I always think that this reading is very high. My mind always tells me to keep on measuring my blood pressure until I get below 130/80. Until it consumes almost 1 to 2hrs of my time just on testing until I'm satisfied with the results :(

Thank you so much. You help me understand this all a lot better. Very helpful. I must admit watching the drawings is also rather addictive/calming. Anyway, thank you.

In my experience, once one fully understands and accepts the concept of "Cognitive Dissonance"...both anxiety and depression can be removed/minimised/eradicated from your being. It's a 'decision', basically. Decide to no longer have anxiety or depression. It worked for me...
