If you have white coat syndrome, having your blood pressure taken at the doctor’s office can give unreliably high results. This video will discuss how to lower blood pressure before your doctor appointment.
What is white coat syndrome? Being in a clinical setting causes someone with white coat syndrome such anxiety it makes their blood pressure go up substantially before having their blood pressure taken. But at home or in their normal surroundings they have normal blood pressure.
This phenomenon is not just restricted to seeing a doctor in a white coat, but being in a clinical setting in general is enough to raise your blood pressure. Other things can make your blood pressure get unusually high at the doctors such as fear of needles, a social anxiety and even exercising before the appointment.
In this video I (Clare from Generation Calm) talk about white coat syndrome, how to overcome white coat syndrome and some simple tips on how to lower blood pressure at the doctor’s.
Learn how to relax when having blood pressure taken. Something as simple as breathing exercises for anxiety can help you to reduce your blood pressure naturally and calm your anxiety enough to get a normal blood pressure reading.
I have another follow-up video for White Coat Syndrome here: • White coat syndrome - ...

I can't control my anxiety no matter how much I focus on my breathing or try to keep my mind off of it. I hate the feeling of my heart beating in my chest and it just makes my anxiety feel worse. Sometimes, I am able to calm myself in the waiting room but AS SOON as the doctor calls me in for the appointment I am back to feeling incredibly anxious. I have pinpointed that my main fear of a doctor's appointment is that they will check my blood pressure and heart rate. It sounds ridiculous but that is the only thing I get anxiety over. As soon as it nears the end of the appointment and I realise they won't be checking my blood pressure or heart rate, I can immediately feel myself relax. I have had countless nurses/doctors worry about mainly my heart rate and an inconsiderate doctor say 'what are you scared of me for????' when I told her my heart rate was high because I was anxious. I now barely trust doctors and it's sad.
@GenerationCalm
@GenerationCalm 4 года назад
I'm sorry to hear that. You've obviously taken the time to think about why you get anxious, but I would challenge you to go even further. To get to the deeper level of why you're only nervous when you have your blood pressure and heart rate checked ask yourself 4 times "why?" So, why do I fear that a doctor will check my blood pressure and heart rate? And then answer "because ....". Repeat this around 4 times until you get to a deeper reason. Write your answers down in a journal and see what comes up for you.
@spazsophie97
@spazsophie97 4 года назад
@@GenerationCalm Why do I fear the doctor will check my blood pressure and heart rate? Because I don't want them to see that I am anxious. Because I don't want them to think my heart rate is high because I'm having a heart attack (which is unlikely but what doctors/nurses have immediately panicked about when they see that it's high). Because it's a physical response to my anxiety that I cannot hide when at the doctor. Because I hate bringing up anything to do with anxiety or revealing that I have it face-to-face because of those negative responses I've received (like that doctor who said... "what are you scared of me for??" and then laughed). Thank you soooo much for your response by the way :)

It seems like maybe it has become a conditioned response as a reaction to the negative comments from the health professionals taking your blood pressure and heart rate. Perhaps this video will help as it dives a little deeper into the thought processes that can lead to these associations. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fs7BICyNSMQ.html. But don't rule out breathing techniques or other relaxation methods, they may not seem like they work, but in the long run they can really help.

@GenerationCalm
@GenerationCalm 4 года назад
Nervousness will make your heart beat faster and can cause your blood pressure to spike for a short time. This is normal, it's just stress hormones doing their thing, but it can really get in the way sometimes. Knowing exactly what you're nervous about is helpful (is it being around people you don't know, are you worried there will be bad news). Also, the simplest and most effective technique to calm your heart beat is to breathe more slowly, especially the out breath.

My blood pressure readings were abnormally high. I was concerned until I realized that I had subdued my breathing while taking the test. I was breathing shallowly thinking that would result in a lower reading. I tried taking deeper breaths during the test and the results were dramatically better. Dont limit or restrict your breathing. You're actually better taking deep breaths rather than shallow ones.

@GenerationCalm

That is so frustrating. Slowing down your breath is your biggest friend while having your BP taken. It's so simple but it can really work and is something you can control. 4 counts in, 6 counts out. It's worth practicing, so when you next go to have your BP taken, it'll be second nature to you. I hope that helps.

I'm not a medical doctor, so I would always suggest you check it out with your family doctor. They know you best. It seems high, but is that all the time, or only when you go to have it checked at a clinic? I would suggest getting your BP checked often and in a relaxed setting if possible. That way you'll know whether it's hypertension or anxiety about the doctor's visit that's causing your high blood pressure. I wish you lots of luck.

Years ago my blood pressure was high during my doctor appointments. The medication for the hypertension was not working. One day my husband took me to the hospital (he was an employee and the clinic was closed on weekends), asked me to sit down, smiled at me, and about 5 minutes later took my blood pressure. The reading was 90/60. I was shocked! White coat syndrome is real. After that day, all of my readings were normal. That was years ago and now I am struggling with the same situation. I am older now, but anyway the readings at home are a lot lower than when I visit the doctor. The numbers go up, so each visit the reading is worse because I get anxious and wonder about what the reading is going to be. I think about Pavlov's Dogs. Have you read about it? Pavlov predicted the dogs would salivate in response to the food placed in front of them, but he noticed that his dogs would begin to salivate whenever they heard the footsteps of his assistant who was bringing them the food. In the same way, as soon as I go to a hospital, my body reacts to the setting/staff.
@GenerationCalm
@GenerationCalm 3 года назад
Oh my goodness .... this is exactly what white coat syndrome is all about! Your example is perfect. It's that some people associate a clinic/ doctor/ hospitals with a bad experience whether they know it or not (just like Pavlov's dogs). And we need to create a new association (like your husband's smile). So try to think about what it is about the doctors office that gets you anxious. Is it wondering what the blood pressure reading will be ....or what it represents? (You don't need to answer that here, just someone to think about). Here is a video you may find helpful as you think about it ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fs7BICyNSMQ.html.

@@GenerationCalm This is embarrassing, but I am going to say it here because I assume that most of you are struggling with the same issue and won't laugh about it. Well... when I see the blood pressure monitor I don't see a machine. I actually see the Grim Reaper! I think about the staff's reaction when they see my reading and that's enough to get a high reading. I have been off during the holidays, so I have had time to take care of myself and enjoy the season. Today I felt heart palpitations after I had a cup of coffee and asked a family member to take my blood pressure. I wanted to know what the pounding was about and the reading was 88/62. I had been sitting for awhile, so this reading is uncommon. Later on I thought about some job related issues and that caused me severe anxiety. I felt the changes in my body, shakiness and shortness of breath and thought, "This is the perfect time to catch the changes in my blood pressure when I am under severe stress." The reading was 112/71. My family is getting annoyed with me. I won't be able to ask them to take my BP again and of course, there is no way I would take it myself. At least I know that the numbers I see when I have a doctor appointment are only related to that visit. Thanks for your comments and video!
@GenerationCalm
@GenerationCalm 3 года назад
It's very common for the deeper reason behind white coat syndrome to be about being afraid of a heart attack etc. Our mind can take us to some far out places if we let it. Remind yourself of the facts ... you're taking your blood pressure as a health precaution - it doesn't mean you are sick and those numbers will fluctuate for most healthy people. Of course, it's easy for me to sit here and say that, it's not always so easy sitting in a Dr's office.

I think a lot also has to do with the person taking it - if they reassure me and are calm and gentle it’s always a much better reading, if their eyes open wide and they like worried I’m like oh god oh god and my pulse goes up !

I thought I was the only one that had this issue but it’s cool to see that I’m not alone. That’s probably the best thing I took from the video, I relate so much to the comment section…thanks for uploading! Your boy can’t even get a physical without eyebrows getting raised. Tips I would give is chart your numbers & bring them in, you have to understand the doctor’s job is to be concerned when the only reference they have is that near crisis level we walk in with. Trust me, I’m that guy, forced to see a cardiologist and all, and when all checked out the doctor was understanding. Sports physicals, I would have high numbers every year even though I knew the doctor & the physical was not invasive at all. I just couldn’t help it but the doctor I had just asked that I drop off a list of over the span of a week and he’d average them and sign off. I also have also noticed that when my BP is taken manually it is much lower than the machine. It still and probably always will be high there, but something about that big life support ICU looking machine beeping definitely doesn’t help, just watching the numbers rise nah…Just request your nurse to take it manually instead, I thought it was a weird request but she just smiled and did that no problem. & that way your not just staring at a digital number climb, making you more anxious, in turn, raising that number, that’s just me though. Ultimately, if your really concerned or your GP is, ask to see a cardiologist and have them do some test or imaging. I had the whole gambit done & all was clear. None of the damage was done to me as it would have if I truly had high BP like my in office numbers were showing. Sure it was annoying because I knew HBP was not a problem, but by taking these tests I not only calmed my doctor down but I also found out my heart is pretty healthy. I have a few appointments coming up & this comment section eased a lot of anxiety…thanks!

Literally I’ve been struggling with this since I was 18. My mom has had serious heart problems which has caused me to have a strong fear of doctors. I get anxiety even when I take my BP at home. When I go to the doctor, it’s usually 145/90 more or less. The highest it’s been is 148/97. When I’m home (still nervous) it’s 130/70 or lower. I’ve gotten readings in the 120’s or below a few times at home when I’m calmer. This is such a struggle for me. I’m 20 years old.

When you consider your mom's heart problems, it makes sense why you fear doctors. There are at least 2 good things in your favor. 1. It's only been two years that you've struggled with this. 2. You have sometimes gotten lower readings by calming yourself down. You can absolutely overcome this with a little more work.

I have very similar problem than you, but in my case I have 43 and same panic or scare to the machine as you (my mam never was sick and she died because a heart attack at 76), I've tried many things to relax before take the pressure and nothing seems working to me, my average heart rate is around 55 (I do a lot of exercise), but when I check my pressure normally it raises between 78 to 100 beats per minute. At home the readings changes a lot, can be 135, 145 or even 120, a doctor told me I am fine then for now I stoped checking because it was a nightmare to me.

It's frustrating! But go easy on yourself, everyone has something that gives them trouble, for you, it's health anxiety. But it doesn't have to be that way forever. For now, try taking your own blood pressure about an hour before an appointment to give them an accurate picture of your normal readings. And during that time, take about 3 readings, keeping your breathing slow and long. It should help.

If I get one bad reading it'll retrigger my high blood pressure fears. At the moment even at home I've been getting super nervous as soon as I even think about testing my blood pressure. I'm in a funk, deep down in my heart I know that my blood pressure isn't high! I just get that test anxiety type of feeling during readings. I'm fit, I eat healthy I take beet supplements, magnesium, flax seed, oatmeal, lots of fruits and veggies it's just so annoying to me that I can't beat this problem. My reading today was 143/74.

Your breath is going to be very, very important for this appointment. Practice beforehand so you can relax on the day. 4 counts in ...a steady 6 counts out. Don't forget the other, less obvious tips such as getting to the appointment early so you're not rushed, feet flat on the ground, don't make small talk with the person taking your BP, keep your cuffed arm rested on a table. Try your best not to think about your livelihood being on the line ..that's a lot of pressure that will start you going down a trail of negative thoughts that will make your heart race. I have anxiety disorders such as panic and general anxiety disorder. Both the doctor setting, and the pressure monitor itself are both triggers for me. When I started going to my current doctor 4 years ago they made me do the 24 hr heart monitor that you suggested, and it came back completely normal. Last week I went to the doctor for a checkup and of course my blood pressure and pulse was sky high, they made me take an EKG and it was completely normal other than high pulse rate. All of the doctors concern over it has caused me to worry, and I've kind of spiraled out of control about it. Sometimes I just don't know what to do. I don't want to have to go on BP meds, I'm only 27. I am able to get good readings at home sometimes when I'm calm. It's just so overwhelming sometimes.

Keep working on practicing calming down while taking your BP at home. Notice what works best for you. Slowing your breathing, or imagining a calming image in your mind. This will help you out so it doesn't feel quite so overwhelming in a clinical setting. And in the meantime, work on improving your lifestyle so you're as healthy as possible. This will not only help your anxiety but also your heart health. The basics such as sleep, exercise, good food and getting outside. Not all at once, but one month decide to work on your sleep and improve your bedtime routine, then another month work on incorporating some more outside time in nature. Hope this helps!

I'm curious about the meds...are they anti-anxiety or blood pressure meds? It might be that you'll need extra time to get used to being at the Dr's office. You could speak to them about your fear, and see if they mind you hanging out in the waiting room during days when you don't even have an appointment. That way, you get used to being there, until it feels like any other place you might visit and doesn't bring up as much anxiety anymore. I know it sounds strange but doing the very thing that makes you scared over and over again, will actually help you get over the fear.

@Kman 4Life Interesting that it's at the same doctor's office where you were ill 3 years ago. But it's good that you are aware of this. Reading between the lines it might be that your fear is about becoming ill or being told you'll have an illness, which then shows itself as white coat syndrome. It might be worth examining your thoughts about this by journaling (journaling is generally a good idea for anxiety anyway) because no matter how many relaxation techniques you use..if your thoughts are catastrophic then your mind will see it as a threat and the body will respond with anxiety. And don't forget to keep a chart of your home BP readings over time.

I'm petrified of being in the doctor's office. I have to fight the urge to runaway and have to basically "Shut down" in order to keep my panic under control. But oh boy, my organs like to let everyone know that I'm actually really, really, freaking out. Last time my blood pressure soared to 160 and I am normally like 113/70 something or 80 something and it's starting to get harder to control the panic I feel. It usually starts actually that morning, when I'm starting to feel kinda stomach sick, then when I'm in the waiting room and waiting, it's like the panic button has gone off and the longer I sit there the worse it is. Then when I go back I feel a little relief but I'm still freaking out. It's way worse at a dentist office because I have to fight back the urge to cry and throw up. I don't understand why I get like this, I do tell myself pleasant things and try to read, but it's like my panic side of me is screaming to get out and I can't shut it out. I don't know if I was experiencing a panic attack or what, but I felt like a fool because it was only a yearly physical. There are other exams I just flat out refuse because I get nervous just thinking about them! I hate it that everyone either tells me to "get over it" or "you're fine" because that doesn't help me. I like to say that to pick a phobia like spiders, and that's how I feel when I go into medical settings. I hate this fear I've developed, because I feel like I'm being a big baby. I always thought I would grow out of it but it keeps getting harder to control it. I know I should maybe warn them ahead of time... but it's difficult for me to admit this babish fear. I'm hoping to try these exercises and maybe it will come down. I'm going to also ask they take it after my brother goes because by then I should be somewhat normal. Crossing my fingers for an easier time next Monday! :)

You describe this situation so well. The thing that a lot of people don't understand about anxiety and stress is that it's not 'all in the head'. The sensations are very physical. Everything you described, the high spike in blood pressure, the feeling sick to the stomach, the urge to run away, wanting to cry are all your body's way of trying to protect you. What is important to work out is why. Because having a phobia of spiders is fine but having a phobia of doctors is going to cause a problem because we need to visit them in order to stay healthy. So try to work out what is it exactly you're scared of. Because no matter how much you try to distract yourself with reading and telling yourself nice things, those negative thoughts will automatically keep rising up. This weekend see if you can take the time to note down what really is coming up for you about those visits.
@daydream1066
@daydream1066 4 года назад
@@GenerationCalm I had to think about my answer for a bit and I think I might have worked out what really bothers me. I think 1. It's the fact I don't have control and 2. People are going to touch me. I've always been petrified of shots, that's one of the first thoughts that races across my mind. I was in a bio tech class where we had to prick ourselves to find out what blood type we were and believe me when needles were involved I think I was basically having a panic attack. It took all my strength to not run out of the there and lock myself in the bathroom. Anyway, our teacher told us she was going to have to post pone it for the next week and I could have cried right there with relieve. Later, I came up with a plan, I was going to inject myself. It was just a little poke like with those blood sugar things. I was going to act like I poked myself while sewing and not have the machine poke me. So with that new plan instead of going into class that Monday with a panic attack, I went in ecstatic about doing the test. My teacher was shocked because I had been fearful about it for a long time, but I did it myself. So I held the button down with the needle up and poked myself. I think having control is what made my attitude turn a 180. The second thing is I've always hated people touching me. I don't like hugs (but can tolerate them) and I am not a fan off kisses. So, when we are at the doctor's there is a lot of poking and whatnot. And to me being touched is like violating me. So I can't even fathom having a PAP or Blood drawn done. People think I'm being ridiculous and dramatic when they ask me what the problem is and this is one of them. So I think those are the two big ones, it's not about the pain of the shot, or the smells, or even the people. It's about what being in a clinic represents to me. Not having control and people are going to want to touch me is what I think scares me the most.
@GenerationCalm
@GenerationCalm 4 года назад
Isn't it amazing that the thought of being in control of that needle made all the difference? A good doctor/ nurse will let you know that they are about to touch you and what's about to happen, but they don't always do that. Knowing what's going to happen in an appointment sounds like it's important for your comfort. If it's an annual exam you probably know the drill and can prepare yourself beforehand. So here are some suggestions that may help: 1. Plan a positive affirmation such as 'I am in control of my body and what happens to it' or 'I am healthy and happy with the help of regular visits to the doctor'. 2. Practice mindfulness techniques while at the clinic to keep you in the present moment rather than getting stuck in your head and worrying about the panic rising. 3. Plan something nice to do after an appointment. Most of us schedule them into a normal life and go back to school or work straight after a clinic appointment. But celebrate having achieved it. Go to a coffee shop or to the movies afterwards as a little pat on the back. 4. And consider telling your health professional your fears while you're in the appointment, they may be more receptive than you think they will be. They want you to have a comfortable experience and sometimes they need to be reminded that it scares some people. Good luck for Monday!

I would wake up with 7-8 hours of sleep, do my running, shower, relax and check my Bp and it's always at 122/77, 125/81 and so on. As soon as I go see a doctor it goes rocket high, today it was 154/94 at doctor's office and I was denied a physical. this will be my 10th or 12th clinic in town and every time it's the same. Please bear in mind I'm a psychologist, not a medical doctor (so I don't have medical training). But the American Heart Association has a chart that shows if the lower number is over 80 it's classed as high. But the question is ....is that your consistent number or is it only that high when you visit a clinic? If you get stressed while having your blood pressure taken, the breathing techniques are best at calming down your heart rate and blood pressure. But if you are getting ahead of yourself at the appointment and worried about results, worried about what your doctor will say, worried you're going to be given bad news ... then the stress will cause your blood pressure to go up again. So you need a 2-prong approach. Relaxation techniques and examining your thoughts. Hope this helps.

IBS is common in people with anxiety. However, being scared when going to the doctors is more about your thoughts about doctors. It quickly gets frustrating to be getting high BP readings and then being sent home with a monitor. So, first, figure out what thoughts you have about going to see a doctor. Write those down somewhere. Doing this will help you understand what types of thoughts are making your blood pressure rise in the moment. What is the likelihood of that thought becoming a reality? What might happen if you challenge that thought? I know you probably want a quick fix, but it’s not always that simple. Your fear of doctors has developed over a long time, and you can change it, but be patient and gentle with yourself. I go into thoughts about doctors in more detail on this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fs7BICyNSMQ.html. If you have GAD there's a strong possibility that your thoughts about doctors and clinical settings could be causing your blood pressure to soar while at the doctor's office. I just uploaded a new video on this that you might find helpful. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fs7BICyNSMQ.html . Using the 54321 technique will help to keep you mind occupied instead of thinking too much. But try to do it alongside slowing down your breath. 4 breath in ...6 breaths out. That helps to calm your mind and body, which in turn, reduces your blood pressure. In between clinical appointments, keep to a healthy lifestyle as much as possible. The only proven ways to reduce your chances of developing high blood pressure are the basics such as moving every day, eating healthily, good sleep, no smoking, limiting alcohol and managing your stress levels. I wish you much luck!

Same age and same issues... I have GAD too and the more i see the bp high the higher it goes and the more i am convinced there is a physical reason. Also because a few months ago it was too low! And suddenly I am having hypertensive seriously high spikes daily. I understand how you feel completely. I even dream about it. I'm trying my best to practise mindfulness meditations and mantras... I am safe, my bp is healthy and stable, I am healing all the time, my body is healthy, I calm my mind etc. I hope you are feeling better. I'm so sorry to hear about your mom and your brother. Yes, it would make sense that both of these experiences could lead you to associate hospitals/ doctors with death. And you are certainly not alone in feeling that. It's possible that you've also had positive experiences with health professionals but are not thinking about those events when you go into a clinic. And you're right - psychologically - those thoughts can have an impact on your blood pressure. It's very proactive of you to take home readings and show these to your doctor. Perhaps it's time to list out positive experiences you and your family members have had with doctors and hospitals too. It may help to shift your perspective.

I have had for years. My GP was actually the one who said, " you have white coat syndrome " The funny thing is I remember when it started. I was going through a divorce and I was at the doctors, that day especially, I was very upset and worried. That was over 25 years ago now and ever since, when ever I am in a clinical situation my blood pressure is up around 167/85. Prior to this it was 110/75 never had an issue. Well it has now cost me a job. Lost my job due to covid. The person doing the medical assessment said, "you need to be on medication." I just said no I don't think so, it is called white coat syndrome, my GP told me I have..... Feeling very depressed 😔

I recently got a new doctor as my PCP suddenly left my insurance group and went into hospital practice. For over 2+ years, my blood pressure was fine with Dr. Flynn. I was often 120 over 71 with variations up and down but never much higher that it was noticed and remarked at. I stayed in the 120s range and at the 70s or exactly 80 range. Now there was a bench seat so my arm was at the height of my heart. And since I am short, I was able to have my feet flat on the floor, back straight. Also I have fibromyalgia and sometimes they pump it up so much, it begins to hurt my arm. But everything was fine with Dr. Flynn and her nurse, Angela. Angie gave me a few minutes to calm from the long walk to my doctor's area in the clinic. Angie was kind but this was a different building. This new place has no seat where my feet touch the floor nor does it have any table to lay my arm on or at about my heart's height. All of this adds to my anxiety and my readings were coming up 130s, 140s over 80s, 90s.. I was also given only two minutes before they went to testing my BP and this is after walking and usually it is not a short walk with the nurse walking very quickly. They do want to try and give my high blood pressure meds but I feel that if the office was made to account for the procedure and for the proper measurements to be taken, I do not have high blood pressure. My feet dangle, both arms have nothing to rest on, the readings are taken so quickly right after I sit down with little rest or positioning. How can I explain that their office needs to make areas more conducive for BP reading and not just be rushed and please not inflate the thing like you want it to pop. Who can I turn to who will understand and actually do something? I hate, really hate to be a bother but I know this is why I get such lousy high readings. The nurse just wants to get it done and over as fast as possible ignoring my request for a better environment, a correct environment for those who are shorter.I dread going for that whole reason. What can I do? I suggested the arm being close to my heart height and she grabbed it and tilted it while trying to pump it up. It moved all over and was a joke. The exam table does not go low enough to place my feet flat. I become anxious, a little frustrated and feel overlooked with the rush and pumping it up so high. Sorry but I don't want to change doctors again since I have had Flynn for 4 years and Dr. Gilliland was my PCP almost 25 years with me. Any advice or help? Sorry for the long rant.

Dude, I am so glad I am not alone. My problem is a huge problem. I have a HUGE fear of the BP machine. Once I see it, I start thinking “ What if it’s high omg what if and it’s going to squeeze me it will hurt and omg what if it’s high “ and then I panic 🥲 especially when the machine goes all the way, that’s it for me. I got so frustrated with myself that I started pressing the dam button of the machine to take my BP again and again and while doing so, I was talking to myself in my head saying “ hey it’s ok, the machine won’t kill me. This is anxiety and I know what anxiety does. See, it’s not breaking your arm calm down “ and It slowly started to go down as I kept breathing. Was 158 and went down little by little to 120. Can you believe it? Anxiety really sucks guys. I don’t know what’s it like to get a dam BP machine as if it was nothing but my mom can do it so well.

I feel like congratulating all the commenters that have blood pressure spikes up to 170 or so....they really don't have as big a problem as they think. Try 240 over 115. I have been that high a bunch of times. For 50 years I can't get a normal reading. I am getting to the point of not wanting to seek medical care of any kind because the first thing they do is make my blood pressure the point of my visit. And frankly I am more risk from a hihg blood pressure damage event when I am in a medical setting. My cardiologist finally agreed I have white coat syndrome but that does not help. My first attempts to self monitor at home, even with blood pressure meds, revealed 220 or more for a few weeks then I just kept at the monitoring repeatedly during each day. Gradually I achieved lower readings and now with 3 blood pressure meds I am routinely down in the 120's for average. Some people are just wired to be like this. All the tests and biofeedback efforts I have tried don't help one bit.

Well in my case i am not scare about the doctors, I am scare about the machine, even if i take the pressure at home many times it is high and even my hearth start beating faster because I start felling some king of anxiety. The worst thing I did in my life was to buy a pressure machine . I do exercise everyday, i am not fat, i do relaxation breadings and meditation ,it does not matter what I do, i cannot control my body reaction when I seat Infront the pressure machine. i already asked two doctors in different countries, both said that I am complete fine and it does not matter some high readings, they refused to give me medication (but one in Thailand recommend me to do meditation and yoga). Anyway even following this last doctor recommendations i still having high readings sometimes. Difficult to understand that a runner like me can have this high readings, mostly when I have low beats rates when I am relaxed (under 60) and 40/50 when sleeping. Another thing that make me increase the pressure leves it is the nurses reactions when they look at the readings and look at me (because my body is the body of someone of use to training and is healthy) , sometimes it seems they cannot believe it, and they say , please relax because it is too high... This thing only make me feel more anxious 😰 At home the readings are very different each day , can be 150, 145, 140, 130, 120 up or even less than 120, and not always when is high the beats are high as well, that's why I don't understand anything about this thing.

Your family doctor will be best placed to answer this question, not only because they know you, but because I'm a psychologist and not a medical doctor. However, when I look at the chart for blood pressure numbers (www.heart.org/en/health-topics/high-blood-pressure/the-facts-about-high-blood-pressure) your readings are still elevated. Before going to see your Dr, it would be helpful to keep a record for a week of your blood pressure readings about three times a day. It's a bit time-consuming, but it will give a good overview for them to make a decision.

It's good that the Dr didn't see any reason for alarm. The more you can practice calming yourself down outside of a clinic setting, the easier it'll be when you next go to the doctors (which hopefully won't be for a while). Slowing down your breath is the most efficient way, so practice a couple of minutes everyday. 4 counts in ...pause briefly ... 6 counts out!

I'm currently working on another video about this, because you're not the only person to say the deep breathing doesn't work. For the vast majority, the breathing techniques work to bring down blood pressure. However, for others there is a deeper issue that involves the thoughts that are running through your mind while at the doctors office. Of course, the biggest thing for now is to make sure that the blood pressure is only high at the doctors office and not all day long. You definitely want to rule out hypertension first. When I upload the next video I'll link it to your comment here, I think you'll find it helpful.
