I've already had multiple people correct an error in the worldwide weekend graphics. Obviously I got a little lost in the charts and mixed some numbers/titles up as I was building out the chart. The good news is that it would have happened no matter what day I did the show. I'll revise and correct for next week.
If you do a good job, almost no-one will comment. If you make one mistake, pendants will comment. A lack of praise is therefore *not* a lack of praise!
"It would have happened no matter what day I did the show" - 😂😂😂 love your channel mate, it comes out Tuesday here in Australia so seems right on time to me 😉
@@williamyoung6311 he was saying he was getting complaints about several things at the beginning of the video, I feel it’s probably one guy who has multiple accounts
Disney made the right call with moving Apes up two weeks. It would had not opened that high had it stayed on Memorial Day weekend with Furiosa not moving.
Much prefer Mondays. I don't give a darn if the numbers are off slightly. If it's a huge thing, then bring it up the next week. I'd rather have the number sooner than later
A series that has been around since the 1960s, seven years since the last film, without its most recent lead character, set narratively hundreds of years later, with mostly unknown actors (at least to general audiences) and it STILL pulls in almost $60 million in a post Covid market according to the most recent estimates is incredible. As for the audience scores, I’m hoping it’s something similar to Civil War. In that audiences ding it for being slower paced than they expected, but it still can have a decent multiple the way Civil War has despite its B- CinemaScore. The fact Apes had a good Saturday hold from its Friday opening is at least a positive sign for now.
They are, right? In general, I think that international posters are usually better than domestic ones. I like some of the international ones for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes way more, including the one I feature on the show. I think the main domestic posters are some of the blandest marketing I've seen in a while. It's mostly way too safe and sterile now, especially for blockbusters.
I would consider the international Kingdom poster similar to most bland Hollywood posters. I prefer the domestic version which I think sets the tone better. Although my favourite is the original teaser poster with the wide shot and silhouette of the ape on the horse. The other ones are just a bit bloated, filled with more detail than necessary - although this is also because now when they make a poster, it’s not just the poster, but the billboard and giant banners/poster plastered in the malls etc, which when printed in that size do deserve to have more detail.
@@DanMurrellMovies why are you guys calling them international posters? it seems to me like the posters are in sepcific asian letters like chinese or japanese or whatever. so they're not really international just from another country specifically. and i've been to cinemas in 5 different countries and all of them use the "domestic posters" from the US. like sure there might've been created some special ones that are used some places but generally the US poster is the one that's used in most places. so wouldn't that mean the US poster is the international one? since the US poster is the one you see again and again in most countries where as the others are specific to one country only? like the godzilla king of monsters poster here. that's not an international poster, it's specifically a chinese poster. what is international about a poster only for one country? where as the "domestic" poster is actually being used in multiple countries; basically all european countries no matter the language and i'm sure it's being used in a lot of asian countries as well. idk, maybe it's a dumb thing to question but i just don't get calling this poster for instance the "international poster" instead of just "chinese poster"
Although I loved getting the actual numbers, your move to Mondays makes total sense and I am LOVING it! Your show is amazing Dan and you continue to be the ONLY one worth watching to hear about box office. Keep up the fantastic work 😊
Hey Dan, I’m actually ecstatic about your move back to Mondays as I had fallen off watching the show regularly but now will 100% be back on board! I program the weekly show schedule for a movie theatre and having Charts back means I can start the week getting the info from YOU, before looking at our chain’s grosses, spending time with the numbers, and then making the schedule. When you were on Tuesdays I was already tired of reading and thinking about the numbers but now I’m glad to be back to a much more enjoyable start to Mondays. Thanks!
It just occurred to me that I am a dude living in Greece at the other side of the Atlantic and I am genuinely interested and looking forward each week hearing from a dude in the U.S about what is going on with the box office there That’s the Dan effect I love your show
I kind of love how morally dubious but somewhat justified humanity is in this movie. I’m mostly cheering against her, but Mae is on my shortlist for best character of the year (only really behind a handful of Dune characters).
i appreciate the punch in on dan explaining him explaining the abbreviated prices. I felt personally called out and very connected to the creator all at the same time lol
@@StarryEyed0590 Abbreviating the numbers rather than rounding them makes sense to me in this context. If a movie has made 4.68 million dollars, then it _has_ already made 4.6 million dollars, but it has _not yet_ made 4.7 million dollars.
Thank you Dan for continuing to make these episodes and being so consistent. Moving to Mondays is better and will get you more views I'm sure. No one else does it as good as you. Thank you!
I find international posters to be way more dynamic. Like they're in motion, busier, louder, generally more fun and interesting than a bunch of faces and bodies in the sky. Can you comment on that?
Really happy Apes is gonna do well. For some reason I’ve been rooting really hard for Wes Ball. He’s had so many projects get shut down late into production and seems like a genuine talent.
Dan. Thanks for all you do. I appreciate the explanation of why you are changing things a bit, but it also embarrasses me that you have to do it. The amount of work and research you put into your content is very appreciated. As for me, I tune in for you... Your expertise and opinions. Do whatever you think is best! I trust you, you're the expert lol and thanks again!
3:00 for sure it bothers me that you don't properly round off the numbers. Never thought to comment about it before but thanks for explaining yourself.
I think most people, like myself, assumed The Phantom Menace was only going to play that May 4th weekend. 🤷 Also money is tight & we have Phantom Menace at home.😋😂
I don't remember what it was that pulled me in but despite never having seen any of the original series I showed up for Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes on opening night (and in 2001 I never did movies opening night because of where I lived).
Lol for the Planet of the Apes franchise tracker, I would've just nicknamed each by their first name (Rise, Dawn, War, etc.) because those are some long names!
Thank you for the numbers and charts Dan. It doesn’t bother me that you don’t round up. In fact, I never noticed it until you mentioned it on today’s episode. I love this show and the channel. Also, I miss Star Trek films too. Keep up the awesomeness!
Totally support the shift to Mondays, I think we are more conducive to weekend box office stuff on Monday more so than on Tuesday. By Tuesday, the thunder has kinda passed (though I watched your show on Tuesday anyway!) So, good choice IMO
I'm overjoyed to hear this as I love this franchise and hope it continues, at least for one more trilogy taking us to 6 films (though I know there's plans for 9 total), It's funny though as these movies seem to do well but I feel like I know barely anyone that's watched them. Their loss!
I really appreciate Dan’s willingness to always listen to his audience, but we appreciate your analysis regardless of if someone’s going to be overly critical
Strangers Chapter One is titled that way because three of them were shot at the same time. So we're getting three Strangers films this year...which I believe the last time a studio did this was with The Matrix sequels and Breakin'.
It’s hilarious that Dan still calls it the “road to recovery”… Isn’t it about time to just call it the new normal? It’s a great chart, super interesting, but we’re never hitting again the relative theatrical highs of the pre-pandemic. Things have changed, and that’s ok. It’s not a bad thing.
Didn't expect my silly comment from last week about rounding up would get a shout out in the next video, but I appreciate it nonetheless😁 Thanks for everything you do and keep up the good work!
Hi Dan. Love the work you do! You have always been my favorite box offices channel since you always try to look at the data and make rational and objective comments about the box office! However, since you have started talking about wanting to grow the channel and stuff, I thought I might offer my point of view on Charts with Dan. A thing I have noticed over the years is that Charts with Dan have gotten a lot more charts, and for me that have made the different uploads a bit less exciting. I loved the 15-20 min episodes, maybe with a cool look at a interesting extra topic as you so often do for 5 min. But nowadays almost all episodes are 30+ min. I know there have been added more sponsors to make it so that you can earn a decent living. Nevertheless, the epsiodes have in my opinion gotten quite a few more niche charts that maybe only interest a minority of the viewers, which may could be left out. So if you want to draw are larger recurring audience, it could be an idea to go back to a more slim version of the episodes to make them more interesting. For example, I skipped around 12-15 mins (2,5 min of sponsors) of todays episode, due to parts I dont really find interesting, and I am one of the loyal viewers that have watched almost every charts with Dan segment since I found you at Screen Junkies. Off course this is only my opinion, but it could be something to think about :) Let me know if you want me to elaborate. And again love you and love your work. Keep it up! :D
I'm definitely liking the show now being on Mondays. I know you have to use the dreaded estimates, but I think you can still do the deep dives that you want.
Love the episode as always, Dan! Just wanted to check in to see if, on the Road to Recovery chart, those numbers are adjusted for inflation? 2015 numbers would definitely be a lot more in today's dollars, and the reality of the industry could be even worse than it looks
There was - it was an unfinished version of the movie that was one of the first major pre-release leaks that I can remember. I don't think it spread wide enough to affect mainstream interest, but it did bleed into the online movie community talk in a negative way.
I think the B cinema score for Apes might be due to the marketing. I don’t know about America, but where I am in Canada, the marketing for this movie is showing this as an Ape vs. Ape fight movie with no humans at all. I was actually surprised when there were humans in this movie when I saw it due to this.
Thank God Apes did well, I need a sequel to that movie. Cinemascore is wild though. Also I appreciated your explanation on how you read the numbers, I always assumed your rounding skills were mixed 😂
Hey Dan, love your box office show and your reviews ❣️ Sorry you need to over explain or clarify many points. The charts you out together, the analytical take you provide, and the thorough analysis; as well as random fun chart comparisons are unique and worth watching every week 🙌
I saw the trailer for ‘Not Another Church Movie’ bewilderingly in front of ‘Mars Express’ on Thursday, so I’m assuming they spent at least a dollar on marketing.
My vote is keep the Mondays. It's my new favorite thing about Mondays. I'm glad people like Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. I didn't like it that much and I predicted it wouldn't do that well. I don't think it will be a big summer hit overall. But I'm sure it will do well considering the competition so far. We'll see how well if does with the other May movies coming out.
I think with no real innovation with the story or themes maybe audience is a little disappointed, but it doesnt make Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes that much inferior. That would be my guess with cinemascore
The term is truncating, which is how Dan always rounds down to a particular digit no matter how close it is to the next higher number. Maybe a little misleading, but Dan will point out when the truncating is especially unfair when interpreting a film's performance.
It's all good Dan. Estimated are fine. Not saying each and every digit of a 7 to 8 string of numbers is fine. Not rounding up when we're talking millions of dollars is fine. I appreciate the show and the lengths you go to not just report the stats but the Context around them.
Mondays are the best! Also, I may be the only one who agrees with the B CinemaScore, but I am so happy the movie did well, I see potential in the sequels even though I did not like the movie much.
Hi Dan, I was wondering what your thoughts were on the recently released final production budgets for recent MCU movies, some of them are outrageous! Dr Strange 2 $415m, Ant man 3 $328m, the eternals $300m. etc! Surely this cannot be sustainable, given the box office decline for the franchise.
@@DanMurrellMovies I appreciate the hard work you put into your charts. I assume someone who works that hard to provide us with these awesome numbers and charts would also appreciate an editor in the audience who gently corrects a mistake. Carry on, Dan. You're doing great work where there would be a huge vacancy without you. 👍🏻👍🏻
Moving to Mondays is the smart thing to do, because you used to be upstaged by "Beyond The Trailer" who basically has always made this same show on Mondays, so your show looked like a rehash of old news when it was on Tuesdays. Now you get to have your takes first on the box office news or at the same time, so viewers can compare them better. Keep up the good work!.
I do understand why people might be worried about the quality of the show, but I don't think it has nothing to do with Dan. It's just that some of the websites around this topic have been becoming worse in the recent times.
First film to open to $100 million before July 26th comes around? I'm thinking possibly Garfield and then Inside Out 2 crossing way past that by maybe $20 million.?
This month, I'm most interested in "Mars Express" - the French animation Ghost in The Shell mystery type movie , sadly its playing in only a few places Also looking forward to "The Dead Don't Hurt" , a western directed by Viggo Mortensen . Love a good western
I was reading about the cinema score and apparently 85% of the scores received were in the a to b range but there was a vocal minority that didn't like the movie that brought the score down. Will just have to wait till next week to see how it effects it though
Regarding the KotPotA Cinemascore, I saw in Hollywood Reporter that insiders weren't concerned because 85% of those polled gave it either an A or B, so the B overall was due in this case to a vocal minority grading it C or lower. I was surprised myself at the Cinemascore result (I've seen generally positive reception overall in most circles), so it's possible the B score is an anomaly? We'll still have to see how it holds in the next few weeks to know for sure though.
Are you not a fan of the solo Reynolds Deadpool movies? Or were you just talking about his appearence in the Origins movie? Personally I'm not a huge fan but I'd love to know your opinion.
I was about to be like "the dude on the Tyler Perry parody movie poster looks like Lil Rel Howrey from Wish" but then the real Lil Rel was on the list at 12:40 😭
I had thought previously that the not rounding up thing bothered me but then I realised it wouldn’t make any sense to round up. If you said Challengers made 4.7m then that’s plainly untrue, because it isn’t that high, and is more misleading that just saying 4.6m.
Tim Burton's POTA still has the biggest opening (adjusted for inflation). I guess it means that audiences prefer to see a fully evolved ape society with them in clothes.
Monday is better. Might need to make a correction occasionally, fine. By Tuesday the box office is old news, considering the estimates come in Sunday afternoon/evening.
Abbreviating IS rounding. That is literally what it is. You have chosen to round down in all cases, which is your prerogative, but it's still rounding.
It’s literally not rounding through. It’s officially called truncation, as others have pointed out, and I’m doing no math. I feel like I’m going crazy over a) the amount of discussion I’m having over this and b) the number of people who are telling me that I’m doing something that I’m flatly not doing. Truncation and rounding are two completely separate things.
I'm suprised the Planet of the Apes movies are so low adjusted for inflation. Usually when it's 50 years old, adjusted for inflation, it blows the current ones out of the water!
