I had not tried Euro style nymphing for years so dug out the gear and had a go on the local small river.
Arbroath Nymphing - a locally adapted and meticulously honed technique 😉 - hence the name - not intended to be taken too seriously. 😂

With most of the trouts feeding done subsurface you sometimes have to fish the percentages and euro nymphing is the most effective technique there is for catching fast and frequently. That said I love getting the dry fly rod in my hand at the first available opportunity. Great video and a lovely looking wee stream 🎣👍🏻

Thanks for sharing your day out. Not a method I have tried and probably "too old a dog to try to learn new tricks " now! What a jewel of a river you have there. Pristine clear water

It is typical of many small rivers in lowland Scotland and has been used an abused for centuries for agriculture and powering light industries with water wheels, dams etc. It is really miraculous that it still holds so many fish and we are lucky to have it. The water is clear but is has quite high diffuse pollution from nitrates, phosphates and a high pH. I would not drink it! 😃

@@wildfisher The same holds true for my northeastern corner of the US.I’m told we once had more Atlantic Salmon than anywhere on this continent; billions of dollars later in restoration efforts and still little or no fish to speak of.

@@steveg8322 This river used to have reasonable number of Atlantic Salmon and sea run browns, still get a few but nothing like it was when I was a kid in the 1960s

Another enjoyable one Fred, and totally different to what I do which makes it all the more interesting.

Thanks Philip. The river is getting tough now and the banks outrageous. It's never easy, the fish are not big but they are also not stupid. We could do with a bit of rain now before it gets too low. Hard to believe it was in the fields last month.

I think we are about the same age 60 plus,,after over 40 years of salmon fly fishing mostly on the river allan ,iv decided to give them a break and fish my local river the linlithgow avon which most fish this nymph method in low water ,but its became clear that nearly nobody fishes it when its running of a spate ,when it comes alive with browns,sea trout and salmon,which i must admit the salmon and sea trout rarely show themselves probably because of a high otter presence ,very strange,and at 30 quid a season and ten minutes from my front door im a happy caster,,only started watching your videos in the last week and im hooked,,only time im up your way is when i fish the findhorn at forres fur two days in august and lochindorb until some diddy decided to put pike in it ..hope yer knees are fairing better than mine its sair going

Williams Favourite has caught me many good trout on the rivers here in the West of Scotland but some really big fish up to 3lb on both rivers Dochart and Lyon. All the best Fred.

I fish the town water of the nith, pretty big water, with the French leader. you've got te be quite brave with yer wading, especially in winter for grayling. but it's worked extremely well for me, even landed myself a couple grayling over the 4lb mark. dead fun, dead effective.
@wildfisher
@wildfisher 3 года назад
That's interesting. I've never used the French leader on a bigger water but imagine it would be quite challenging. All these Euro nymphing techniques are most certainly very effective. Even on our small river I have taken fish out of inches of water on nymphs with the French leader that I know I would have spooked with a fly line. 😊

A productive way to fish on its day but definatley not fly fishing. Lovely video to watch by the way, looks a great little river.
@wildfisher
@wildfisher 3 года назад
Thanks for your comment Stuart. 😊 I completely agree, not fly fishing, but that said it is perfectly valid way to fish. It is a nearly identical technique to long rod upstream worming, still practiced by a few very skilled "old timers" on this very river when I was a boy in the 1960s. Back them they kept every fish they caught above 9 inches and boy they caught a lot of them. 👍
@stuartbowdin6671
@stuartbowdin6671 3 года назад
@@wildfisher It is a method that I use myself from time to time but still prefer to feel the line going through the rings, agree with you about upstream worming a dying art.
@wildfisher

@@stuartbowdin6671 Me too, I much prefer the tactile part of fly fishing with a proper line. 👌
