I’m just tired of them. Now a days, you see nothing but remakes, hell this year alone we’ve had Dead Space, Resident Evil 4, MGS3 announced, Persona 3 just got announced, even games that don’t need a remake like The Last of Us got remade again. It’s not that I hate them , it’s the fact that we’re remaking games that don’t need to be remade. For example I don’t think a game released in the PS3/360 era needs a remake, I’m sorry. I would much rather see a new IP being made, than a game I already played, It basically boils down to, so instead of making something new, they’re just trying to cash in on people’s nostalgia.

I totally agree anything from PS3/360 era is already modern as hell and clearly needs no remake/remaster. But even things that didn't look great first time around. I mean, take Mario 64 for e.g. Of course it looks like an N64 game, but so what? That's part of the charm. I don't mind those polygonal graphics or the pixelated graphics of yesteryear, because that is just a part of the reality of what games were like then. We don't need to erase that history just because games today are hyper-releastic. In fact, in a lot of cases, like the GTA Trilogy, the older graphics make it a lot easier to be immersed in the world, while the hyper-realistic newer version makes the game look more cartoony, because the cartoony people are clashing more significantly with the realistic lighting/foliage. But when everything had a more consistent look, it's easier to lose yourself and believe the world is real.

I sort of object to using footage of FF7 ps1 whilst talking about "outdated originals", especially given how the FF7 remake is a vastly different experience, literqlly tells a different story (so far), and seems to depend on the player having knowledge from the original game, to the point where many who played both would consider the game titled "remake" to actually be more of a sequel than a remake.

Yes! Magolor’s Epilogue really makes you think about how to consider Kirby Clash canon! Maybe Kirby is a species? That explains Keeby, speaking of which, maybe there’s only one Kirby, all others could have different names! Edit: apart from lore, can we just talk about *the music!* Kirby usually has a whole lot of leitmotifs but..hmm got to be spoiler proof, the final boss feels special because most people haven’t played clash, you don’t realize the sheer amount of leitmotifs until you watch a video detailing them all or get the game! Edit (remastered): maybe Magolor may have been taken to another dimension after this? It would explain why there’s so many Kirby’s, and how parallel things get into the Clash universe so easily but not the normal one!

In Super Mario Bros., you actually could continue from your current world if you got a game over if you held the A button while starting a new game, and in Lost Levels this was standardized into an actual menu for full infinite continues. As for Super Mario Bros. 2 USA, you DID have continues to keep playing from your current world rather than starting the whole game over, you just had a limited amount of them unlike in the other games.

I think it's worth acknowledging that game preservation is important, and if you don't want to get into emulation, modern remakes are usually your only method of acquiring said game. The point of controversy though is when a remake makes enough changes that it feels less like a replacment and moreso its own thing. It's a hard line to balance when it comes to fan reception depending on your intentions with said remake. Are you going to make it as faithfull to the original as possible, or do you want to make major changes that you believe could improve upon the experience? I know Demon Souls fans were left confused on the PS5 remake because they felt it was different enough while also remaining very faithfull to the original, so they find it akward trying to make it fill the same spot as the original. Then you have a remake like Metal Gear Solid Twin Snakes which was contentious amongst fans of the original because of changes to the overall tone, as well as copying the gameplay from MGS2 which unintentionally broke the balance of the game since it wasn't designed with 2's mechanics in mind.
@kirotalksyt
@kirotalksyt Год назад
Very fair point. Personally, I like it when remakes give you the option to pick between playing the game like the OG, or playing the game in the new remake-style. Kinda like how RE1 Remake lets you pick between Classic Tank controls and Modern Controls. That way, people who want to experience it how it was originally intended can, but those who want a new experience can as well.

@@kirotalksyt The Halo Master Chief Collection would be the best example, however the OG textures for Halo 1 are using the Gearbox PC port, which is said to be a bad port. So I guess even that's not a good example of preservation.

This is not really true, porting is the best way to maintain game perservation without resorting to emulation or remakes. Classics like Final Fantasy 7 have been ported to everything from the PS Vita to the PS3, Switch, PC and so on. Edit: I should also add that thanks to porting, games that were overlooked in their original release like Dragon's Dogma garnered a new fanbase thanks to the Dark Arisen port on PS4/Switch/PC and now thanks to the increased interest in the franchise we're getting a new game more than 10 years later. This is a great example of why porting is the way to go. The original game lives on and remains available and the series moves forward instead of retreading old ground.

I'm in agreement with your opinion at the end. I don't mind remix. In fact I absolutely loved Kirby Superstar on the SNES. I played it as a kid and as a teenager and even as an adult, but when Kirby Superstar ultra came out for the DS I was happy to play that as well. It may have had to do with the fact that it was a portable game so I could actually for The first time play Kirby Superstar on the go. Of course nowadays you can do that with the original Kirby Superstar by playing it on the switch through the SNES online service, but back then that wasn't a thing and I sometimes like going back to Kirby Superstar ultra because of the new features and the new modes and so on. I do wish that days of ruin was the advance Wars game that they remade because that was easily the best advanced Wars game as it was the most balanced with some price changes and some changes to power and defense and I liked that you could actually put your navel forces under bridges so you can actually have them not be stuck because of bridges, but ultimately I am pretty happy that Advance wars is back at all. And the first two games are fun anyway. They have the more fun campaign honestly. They have more personality. Still days of ruin is the best game, but I guess people just preferred one and two because of how more cartoonish it is compared to how serious days of ruin is. I just hope someday they finally make a fifth advance Wars game. That would be awesome! At a sniper so there could be an infantry that can capture buildings and can attack from a distance. At a missile sub so there could be another submarine unit that can dive underwater so only units next to it can see it and only a few units can attack it. Of course the balance is that when it's dived underwater it uses up more fuel so sometimes you got to rise it up above the water Just like with the regular submarine. Differences the missile sub would only be able to launch missiles at a distance and only hit ground forces. The reason why I think that would be the right decision is to balance it. If the missile sub could attack ground forces and naval forces I feel like it would unbalance things because it would be hidden underwater and able to attack all other naval threats from a distance which would be incredibly unfair.

While I agree for the most part, there was one section that stood out to me. At 7:45, you go about how "When was the last time you heard someone talk about x?" and I couldn't help but laugh a little. "Advanced War"? I think it was literally the same week the remake was announced. The channel whoisthisgit brings up the series on occasion, either to highlight mechanics, analyze certain stages, general overviews of entries, etc. "Pac Man World"? James (Nitrorad) covered the entire series in a set of reviews within I think a month or two prior the remakes getting announced. "Spyro"? I'd been watching speedrunning history videos on some of the entries. And I think it was either Caddicarus, SomecallmeJohnny, or another channel which talked about the series for one reason or another around the same time as well. Just a matter of perspective I guess.

Also sometimes remakes for certain games are very difficult to even start. Not because no one can physically do it but due to legal reasons, specifically licensing. Games that are very heavy on the licensed content, such as racing games that use real world car brands, have to get their approval in order to renew the licenses and get the remake ball rolling which can cost a lot of money. This is why games like Forza get removed from online stores due to licenses expiring and because of that they legally cant keep them up on the storefront. Other remakes like the N-Sane Trilogy only require whoever owns the IP to give the green light to do it. Remakes for games like Need for Speed: Most Wanted however will need to have tons of cash to be spent just for the right to put it back on storefronts (and given the Need For Speed series is owned by EA...)
@leithaziz2716

Good remakes can foster originality. Let's look at Fire Emblem. Echoes, the 15th game, is a remake of the 2nd game on NES. Like many 2nd games on NES, it was very different from the rest of the series. In most FE games, spells are a limited resource that can be given to any mage. In FE2 and FE15, each mage has a unique list of spells that are learned at a certain level and can be used forever. In most FE games, promoting to an advanced class gives a set bonus to each stat. In FE2 and FE15, promoting raises any base stat below the advanced class's bases to those bases, with no bonus in any other stat. FE15 also expanded on FE2's magic system by adding combat arts, which were unique attacks that could be learned, kept, and used infinitely by any physical character, essentially functioning as physical spells. FE16, Three Houses, is the best selling game in the series, and carries over tons of mechanics that were only seen in FE2 and its remake, FE15, the prior game. Three Houses allows any unit to access any class, but they all have access to unique combat arts and spells that prevent all units from feeling the same. Each unit can also function in each class, because no matter what stats they have, promoting will bring them up to that class's base stats, ensuring that they always have the stat distribution they need. Three House's greatest innovation was its class system, and it was made by looking back to old ideas that, aside from the prior remake, hadn't been used since the NES. The remake brought forgotten ideas back to the series and those ideas bred innovation. Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia is a shining beacon of what a good remake should be.

No if successful they will lead to less sequels and more remakes. What kind of logic is that? Buying remakes is telling publishers, "Don't bother coming up with original ideas. There's already a huge market here willing to buy old games all over again." It's free money to them to keep pumping out remasters.

Nice video, made me rethink my stance on video game remakes as whole, and you bring up points even I shouted for a while here on RU-vid like remakes overshadowing the original game's legacy. I view games as a form of art, and good art is something that is always timeless in my eyes, regardless of when it was made and what it was made with, so when a game gets remade, it makes people see games less as art and more as disposable toys. In my case, I have yet to play a remake I prefer over the original, not even RE1 Remake replaces the original for me. It lacks the hilarious B-movie horror vibes of the original. This current generation of gaming though is the most obsessed I've seen in regarding remakes. It's like we are in gaming's version of the Disney Live-Action remakes. We run out of money-making ideas so let's just remake all the good games. I see greater value and more artistic effort when remaking a bad game into a good like with Ninja Gaiden 3 into Razor's Edge or possibly the upcoming Lords of the Fallen remake, but investors won't go into that because it's not safe, so instead we remake good games into either worse, usually worse, or better versions of said game. I guess I'm just more worried about remakes making every video game look the same and feel the same.

Remakes are like a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it can show a modern generation a game series long forgotten like advance wars or crash bandicoot and spyro. They can also fix bugs and glitches with the original game that could never be fixed and polish locations and finalize characters desgins . But also, they can add new content to the remake. On the other hand. It could add more glitches to it or sometimes recon the original story. It could also change the original art design idea or setting. It's really about how hard-core of a fan you are. But hey, if we didn't have remakes, series like crash bandicoot, spyro, henry stickmin, Rachet and Clank, and advance wars would be long forgotten.

I'll never be opposed to remakes or remasters, because it means new generations will get to experience the same stories that impacted us without having to buy a used console (and usually a compatible TV) and put up with a game experience that might be unintuitive or obtuse compared to what they're used to. Issues like bad ports or delisting of old games aren't the fault of the remakes themselves, but instead of greedy business practices in the industry -- something that we should be looking to combat at the source, instead of targeting games themselves.

Like for me That game would be Bully. I don't own consoles so i never experienced the ps2 original (And by the time i was maybe 3 the ps2 was already irrelevant and hard to obtain) but luckily i had a chance to play Scholarship edition which is more of a port, but it adds a lot of stuff so i count it as a remake. Honestly remakes are hardly anything new. I mean, humans have been retelling stories and recreating art for ages. How many versions of classic characters like Gilgamesh, King Arthur or Heracles can you think of? How often are iconic paintings and sculptures reimagined with a different twist, like the statue of Medusa holding Perseus’s head? Remaking games just feels like a natural evolution of that trend. People like seeing new takes on old ideas.

I think remakes are a problem in specific cases where a game is full priced and is remade unnecassarily eg like the case of last of us 1, already remastered for the ps4 generation they ddint need to remake it for ps5 and price it at 69$. Especially since ps5 is backwards compatible anyways with the ps5. you could even throw GTA V in there as another example

I love the original clankyness of dead space but I also love the remake but then theres the GTA trilogy remaster and the ports of the original game to a digital emulator costing the full price of brand new game. like the MGS remaster vol 1 which im betting is like the vita, ps3 ports but this time for the ps4/ps5 xbox one/series costing $70 these are the bad side of remakes/remasters.

I don't think remakes are bad as they've introduced me to a lot of old masterpieces which have aged like milk due to not having simple things like subtitles or, being an rpg fan, having too many random encounters. But it's true that if a game is getting a remake I want the developers to enhance the experience not just redo it. Super Mario RPG for example was an awesome remake but it didn't add anything aside from a postgame with super bosses for a pretty easy rpg. I could have just played the original tbh. Star ocean 2 on the other hand had a total rework of QoL, I haven't played the original but on the remake of the first it was apparent that it was an old game. In the second one, you can avoid random encounters, you get percents of success for your actions, animations are shortened or play in real time, lots of fast travel, new save points... That's what I want on a remake

Game remakes are a lot different to movie remakes. There are some good points when it comes to remaking movies but most of the time it's unnecessary and is usually made for a quick buck and while the same can be said for game remakes, there are more reasons to make them. Games are stuck on the platforms they run on unless ported which is sometimes difficult to do and sometimes the original version is hard to come back to (I could day that with games like the original FFVII despite how good that game is). Also bonus points when remakes get PC ports because they're usually very moddable like with RE4 Remake. So in conclusion. When are we getting a Devil May Cry 3 remake
@UnchainedEruption
@UnchainedEruption 3 месяца назад
The solution there would be for Nintendo and Playstation to catch up to the Xbox, and just come bundled with backwards compatibility, or digital storefronts to buy emulated versions of previous gen games. Or ditch consoles and just play them on PC, where you have infinite backwards compatibility. It is ridiculous how a popular PS game gets remade every single time a new console comes out. It's clearly a very inefficient way of doing things. And if all you really wanted is wider availability, then just do a port of the game as is. Remastering or remaking just ruins the original experience.

As a fresh gamer (just started in 2020 when I bought a Wii for 10 bucks) I do appreciate remakes, usually gives me a way to experience the story and buy the game on my current platform legally. Despite not being a fan I love the approach the RE games take, they have their remakes but many of the originals are also readily available for purchase if you so desire. Companies want emulation to stop, but that won’t happen unless companies make an active effort to make games they KNOW people want to play available for legal purchase.

Hell no, the problem is when they remake a game from the previous generation instead of porting/remastering, especially when it holds up today. I have no issue with remaking anything from before the PS3 generation. But it's ridiculous when you have say, the Last of Us on PS3, remastered for PS4, and remake for PS5. And now I hear of a possible remake for Last Of Us 2. I also have a fear that remakes might change too much of the original game or make some sections worse (Majoria's Mask 3DS or FF7R). I think anything from the Genesis, Saturn, NES/SNES, PS1/PS2 consoles should be top priority for a remake. Any handheld game is fine too, most of the handhelds are quite old and it's difficult to find games for those systems (plus seeing them in HD or 4K would be amazing).

I always kept into consideration that the premise of most video game remakes were for the newer generation to have access to these classic titles. Added content and Quality of Life improvements while still keeping the essence of the original to entice those who have already played these games a revisit to memory lane but then we get something like the butchery that is Resident Evil 3 remake and I just roll my eyes everytime I see another remake/remastered/reimagining gets released. I feel like remakes would be unecessary if game companies and those who make the consoles also had a focus on video game preservation and backwards compatibility. Sadly this is not that we live in.

Remakes are fine if done with the love and dedication they deserve, and they add accessibility to previous generations games that might otherwise be lost. I'd never played any of the Spyro games before the Reignited Trilogy came out, but I loved playing Reignited, the updated graphics are more pleasing to the eye, and nobody was gonna dig out a PS1 (or pay the usual extortionate second-hand costs) to replay it, so it brings the series to a whole new audience. The GTA Trilogy is the classic example of how NOT to do a remake though. I was so looking forward to that, as I loved playing GTAIII the first time round, but I don't have access to a PS2 any more, but seeing how buggy and glitchy the remake turned out was such a massive disappointment, it just seems like Rockstar phoned it in for a lazy cash-grab.
@justsomesimplenuclearbirbs4313
To me, remakes feel like both a second chance for the original game and a way to gauge interest in how popular a series/franchise is depending on both the state of the series/franchise. Not all remakes are made equal. If anything some remakes actually can cause issues. For example, the remakes of Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and Bowser's Inside Story. While it made sense for the former due to the game being a GBA title and at that point the 3DS *still* didn't have any publicly available GBA Virtual Console titles on 3DS (only early adopters, aka folks who bought the console at launch for full price before the price drop, were allowed to get GBA games and even then it was *extremely* limited with the selection), Bowser's Inside Story was a DS title, meaning the 3DS could still play it with ease unlike Superstar Saga (which was not one of the available GBA titles for early adopters). But due to both remakes being released on an already dying handheld sale were extremely low and despite the positive reviews, caused the developers of the Mario & Luigi series, AlphaDream to declare bankruptcy later due to an constantly growing debt the company had on top of the sluggish sales and high development costs. Remakes are a take the good with the bad type of deal. If it flops, it flops, regardless if the remake is good or not. Not much can be done if that happens.

You make a lot of fair points both ways, and I agree if it's a once in a while thing, okay sure it's fine. But it's not. The attitude is to just remake literally every single thing that was ever good or popular in the past, even when in most cases the game is already currently available to buy on modern systems easily and cheaply. In fact, it's usually way more expensive to buy the remake than it is to just play the originals.

I don't need to think what a remake of Lost Planet would be like I can look at Lost Planet 3,. But yeah access of selling, fixes and more to games are valid of nonsense sometimes. For hidden gems they make sense a second chance (what I want if no one takes the old ideas and leaves them behind to push overdone ideas and never look at the old again because why not be original or old but stand out because standing out isn't an option apparently it's being boring and copying because forget good design it was the marketing not the game itself but Devs and Pubs are too stupid to try again and look deeper. Or oh it has to be realistic how boring and limiting potential ideas to be graphics appealing to idiots that don't care about smart design just whatever themes and visuals on screen then the playing part unless it's hard and dull gameplay glad hidden gems stay that way of fresh and unto uhed sometimes the more games I find with unique ideas and I can go ah old gen had good ideas and new gen won't take them might as well explore more old that aren't getting any easier to get for prices or try emulation because they aren't getting remakes ever. But eh with being remade as the big have design that was consistent back in the day to current making them fair and not needing much change which is fine or changing to be worse) their not working designs changed but in some cases could be more trope typical new era design you may hate. With most remakes it's oh it was popular/reboot it for an new audience, oh change the design of the old to more new in some areas, make money on existing, better graphics. Eh I don't care for most remakes. They can add things but also pad them out, they can be games that already had similar design of old and new then some different old and some maybe ok new or better new or bad new. Sega GT car building never again (besides other games that generation of sixth gen). Battlefield 2 swap mechanic around soldiers on the map is awesome never again. Driver San Francisco same thing never again. So many games suck because they barely try again and oh realistic oh these elements. It's boring and remakes can have similar issues of being yes different but also the unique stuff should stay sometimes depending what it is of course some vehicle missions or other stuff can be awkward yes and just didn't work so a take 2 may be worth it it may not be. That or games get a sequel and oh the sequel sucks because it went all trendy then worth it of good ideas. Mirrors Edge or Perfect Dark there. Spyro Reignited changed things that made Spyro 3 have less rewards so sure for quality of life you get them already but you get nothing to replace them doing the Sparx levels then gems why???? Some things feel different which is expected but eh sick to death of heavy characters it sucks and especially if they are small why would they need to be as awkward as adult humans to play as. I know the old design enough and even Clive n Wrench surprised me with design that's so floaty it was weird but interesting then oh it's heavy I can't stand. The floatiness is awkward too but I prefer some floaty then too much heavy with most games besides heavy and annoying these days because how slow they can be on the sticks or walking segments and other garbage. PS3/360 era is always relevant as many current gen games still go off those formulas or cutscenes, walking segments and other nonsense a decade later WHY? I never looked at them and went yep so many should do this I said I hope they don't do this and kept playing ones to avoid those issues yet they end up in so many games and it's frustrating Devs copy cat and make me keep digging deeper to avoid the pathetic design. I Eman with current gen most games feel done to death, not much dynamic elements or as exciting highs because they are made to be easier, less creative and well copy elements and very few changes because they need to follow others formulas because boring design and trend hopping and Devs wasting their time on things they aren't familiar with happens. Sure not with remakes but I mean it could still happen if remaking content.

They could have easily added the additional control like going prone from 2 to the remake or added some new scenes or things to do. It doesn't make any sense to me why they kept 1:1 of the original. However while we say "It isn't too old" I also have to realize that the (original) game is 10 years old... And that's actually a whole lot of time. It opens the game up to a whole new younger audience, however a 2nd remaster to the PS5 could have also done that.
