A 15 minute video showing that yes indeed, it is possible to re-create the longest sniper shot in history - with Arma 3 ACE3 Advanced Ballistics. VICE ARTICLE - motherboard.vice.com/read/the-...
Intro, talking about mods: 1:07
Some condensed calculations: 4:35
Actual shots taken: 6:00 - 9:25
Gratitude: 11:20
Music segment conclusion: 12:50
Sniper Tutorial:

MAKE SURE ADVANCED BALLISTICS IS ENABLED! Most of the time it's not enabled by default. In the editor you need to create an advanced ballistics module. You can run [ systemChat Str(ace_advanced_ballistics_enabled); ] (No brackets) in the editor debug menu to make sure. ace3mod.com/wiki/missionmaker/...
TRex Words from a master -
He used .338 Lapua Magnum 250 gr B408 Lockbase rounds (BC: 0.622 & MV: 900 m/s), shot them outta AI L115A3 rifle with some S&B 5-25x56 PM II LP scope on it. Due to the 2475 m distance, his bullet dropped 120.95 m (396.8 ft) or in angular units 48.9 Milliradian (168 MOA) that killshot is a miracle shot coz the target was way too far beyond max effective range of that bullet (1400 m)
to recreate his longest shot you need some AI L115A3 rifle (27 inch barrel) loaded with .338 Lapua Mag 250 gr B408 Lockbase bullet (with a G1 BC of 0.622 or G7 BC of 0.322, and a Muzzle Velocity of 900 m/s). You have to use a Schmidt & Bender 5-25x56 PM II scope. You also have to shoot under the atmospheric condition of Musa Qala (1,043 m above sea level, Air pressure = 910 hPa or 27 inhg).
Beyond 1500 m, that round becomes really unstable

While his scope offered a maximum magnification of 25X, Harrison had to zoom out to 15X magnification to see his point of aim on the crosshairs due to the first focal plane reticle. Though this doesn't affect the ballistics in any way, in terms of recreating the shot you could've lowered the magnification accordingly. Even though your ingame scope is ffp as well, all of the outer mildots are still visible when fully zoomed in which i find a bit irritating. In addition (according to Harrison's book): It was nowhere near as hot as 38°C but rather very mild and there was no air flickering/wavering whatsoever. While this provided clear visibility, lower temperatures meant higher air density, therefore higher air resistance and a shorter maximum effective range. I'm not hating, just complementing. Very well done.

I love it. Thanks for the valuable info. I know this wasn't done perfectly, and I should have taken more time into it, but for the sake of VICE motherboard... I rushed a few aspects of the recreation. I would love to make more advanced ballistic/advanced sniper videos. I feel like there is that small niche community who takes sniping seriously that I really want to get involved with. However, I have life to deal with, and sitting down and making a video has gotten away from me. Hopefully I can continue to put out quality content... Appreciate the attention to detail

+ Seriously Also I'm sure someone's told you, but Cpl. Harrison DID fire a third shot that broke the machine gun (a PKM) after killing the crew.
@deisumus1
@deisumus1 8 лет назад
+tSp289 That's correct. Nine test shots in a different direction, then first aimed shot hit the gunner, second aimed shot hit the target trying to pick up the machine gun and the third shot destroyed the machine gun (Which is THE perfect combination of skill, conditions and luck).

Super interesting video and nice concept. I'd love to see more reenacted shooting records like that. If thats possible for you, it would be great to get a longer version to see all the calculations you made. For the less interested users, you could then add a "skip to *minute:second*"-button. Anyway, thanks for sharing!

For informational reasons. When you take shots at this range you have to take literally everything into account. Coriolis Effect, Barometric Pressure, Altitude, Spin Drift, Heat of: the bullet, barrel, powder, air at target and rifle, Dew Point, Moisture in the air and on the round, Drop and Wind, Weight of the bullet, and a few other things I cant remember off the top of my head.

'Corporal of Horse'. Lol. We Brits can be somewhat silly sometimes with our archaic titles and military ranks. Now, if Cpl. Craig Harrison had pulled that shot off *on horseback*, well, every enemy of the UK should tremble in fear. Craig's out to get'cha.
@theoriginaldylangreene
@theoriginaldylangreene 8 лет назад
How exactly is it archaic? He's part of a cavalry regiment. In active duty they have switched from horses to light armoured vehicles, but their role is exactly the same as horse cavalry in any historical period, mainly recce and harassment.

Why would you continue to fiddle with your miliradian (or is it M.O.A?) adjustments? When the miss is that slight, you could've easily aimed off by the same amount you're missing by and nailed t in two shots.
@Serouisly
@Serouisly 8 лет назад
+Kill3rCat We weren't under time constraints and adjusting a scope in ACE is much easier than real life. There is adequate time to adjust scope and maintain corrections for subsequent shots - hold offs are not as reliable due to shooter recoil, breathing, memorizing point of aim after reload, etc. At 8:15 I was applying hold offs based on the very visible green trajectory line. Sort of cheating... Under time constraints I fully agree. It makes sense to apply hold offs to subsequent shots if the target is fleeing to cover.

where did you get that three number? the wind could be the same the entire distance or change 15 times not 3. there's no way to get the speed at the target or the middle, but you can just survey things like leaves blowing and make a guess.

luck was on his side but he definitely knew what he was doing. He fired 9 practice shots in a different direction and then 2 killing blows on targets and 1 shot to disable the gun itself. British snipers do not depend on luck.

I have limited knowledge of ballistics so sorry if I sound dumb, but I'm just curious, is there a long enough range at which even if you were to hit your target it would be non lethal? Like for instance a headshot might just result in an open wound w/burns or a serious concussion but not deadly?
@chaos2876
@chaos2876 7 лет назад
Yes but it would be extremely difficult to pull off. You would need the perfect distance and firing angle to make the round travel far enough while losing enough speed to be non lethal.

There are reports of a longer shot that was a confirmed kill. It involved Delta COY 2 Commando at 2,815m. Problem being that it was a simultaneous shot buy two separate .50cal Barrett M82's at different positions. The target was a confirmed kill but the kill cannot be attributed to an individual therefore its not being confirmed as the longest recorded kill. The Australian Army has also not confirmed this as 2 Commando is part of the Special Operations Task Group (SOTG) details of their missions are highly guarded.

They're not replicating the shot from the movie, but rather the record shot by the British soldier, and thus used the correct rifle.

One great shot was by Gunnery Sergeant Carlos Hathcock, United States Marines. He got a confirmed kill using a M2 Browning machine gun mounted with a telescopic scope at 2,286m (2,500 yd). Scopes where still new back then. He made this shot in 1967 and held it for 35 years until it was broken in 2002. It's quite remarkable how he held the record for that long without even using a normal rifle and scope that just recently been introduced into war.

shame that arma doesnt simulate the curvature of earth it self, dont know that does it simulate the spinning of globe either. so there would be huge difrence to what direction you are shootin. ( east - west etc ) . I dont know all the terms for those in english , so hence the weird wording of my comment.

@Serouisly

I didn't use that scope intentionally because the developers who made the rifle (CUP weapons) made the ballistics match up closest with the shot. Other mods have the L115A3 with the S&B PM2 5-25 but their ballistics are all off.

That's a pity, I was in afghan when Cpl Harrison made this shot and one think you cannot replicate was the heat that we were all subject too. The mirage that hinders the spotter and his ability to observe splash. Also both his targets were not standing and optically a target at 2475m with a height of 1.7m would measure near 0.8 mil on the scope from foot to head.

Sir, I plan on making another video for this game here soon, and I am in need of good resources or knowledge, could I have a way of contacting you by private message? Specifically I am making a video about sniper fieldcraft and concealment tactics. There's hardly anything on youtube or online, I can only find old training cassettes or dated field manuals, I would be very grateful if you could impart some knowledge to me...

Dude, Harrison's dope for that shot was approximately 47 Mils. You maxed out your elevation adjustment to 30 Mils & only held 4 Mils (so your dope was only 34 Mils)?!! it's 13 Mils different from the real shot. Are you sure you used the exact same loadout? :\
@Serouisly
@Serouisly 8 лет назад
+Vivekananda Lengkong We were off by about 500 meters elevation and some Muzzle velocity (ambient air temperature wasnt perfect). Though I have to question what type of mils the news article that reported Harrisons shot is referencing. From wiki The USMC standard is that 1 mil (that is, 1 milliradian) equals 3.438 MOA (minute of arc, or, equivalently, minute of angle), while the US Army standard is 3.6 MOA, chosen so as to give a diameter of 1 yard at a distance of 1000 yards (or equivalently, a diameter of 1 meter at a range of 1 kilometer.) Many commercial manufacturers use 3.5, splitting the difference, since it is easier to work with. Do we know if it was actually 47 mils in European or US format?
@vekonglengkong
@vekonglengkong 8 лет назад
Seriously Felix (my brother) gave me the ACE3 Sandbox & i tried to do Harrisson's shot using the exact same loadout & under the same atmospheric condition (played on CLafghan). Afair my elevation was around 47 - 49 Mils which is the same as the real shot (while yours was only 35 Mils). I think your loadout wasn't exactly the same as Harrisson's (you used CUP L115A3, didn't you?) Imho you should give the Sandbox a try.... Afaik ACE3 AB uses USMC standard (1 Mil = 3.438 MoA). Since the making of ACE3, Ruthberg decided to fully implement the Metric system (meter, cm, grams, celcius). So 1 Mil = 100 cm or 1 m @ 1000 m or 1 km. I'm pretty sure Harrisson used USMC Mil too.... Anyway Rob Furlong's shot is really interesting to be recreated too ;)

+Vivekananda Lengkong hi, which Rifle, from which mod pack and exact ammo you use instead of the CUP L115A3? i have a whole universe of addons/mods installed, but only can find the 2 CUP Versions, and one by Massi....And in those Rifles the ACE3 Ammo wont fit. Only in e.g. The Noreen... yeah, and what Scope? thx :D
@vekonglengkong
@vekonglengkong 8 лет назад
ironblader the author of AB (Ruthberg) gave me a "Sandbox Mission" which allows me to simulate any desired Loadout I want by modifying the gun & bullet ballistics parameter during gameplay :) With that "Sandbox Mission" I was able to turn CUP L115A3 ammo into Harrisson's 250 gr Lockbase round. With that Sandbox, i can turn any available loadout in game into any desired loudout i want (in term of ballistics). you want me to share the "Sandbox Mission" with you? ;)

I remember making a 1400 meter shot with the 12.7 mm lynx in arma 3 wasteland and hitting 2 guys back to back at that distance. Sniping in arma 3 is one of the most satisfying ways to get a kill, especially when the guy is at like a full blown sprint across a field and you're up on a hillside and take him out in a single shot and then watch his buddies go running for cover as you take the rest of them down.

Hi! I'm watching ur videos. Thanks for uploading good videos about Arma 3 ace sniping. I studied sniping and really got a lot about it with ur videos :) Well.. In fact, I have some problem with sniping because there is little data of the gun that I use I use AWM that uses .300 caliber of which is one of rifles in HLC AW addons(www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=28950) I use ACE 3 mod and advanced ballistics, but there is no data about this gun in ATragMX.. Seriously, I tried to find datas over 2 weeks but I failed to get enough data.. I wish u can help me.
@Serouisly
@Serouisly 8 лет назад
+김조현 The HLC AWM is a great addon. I didn't use it in this video because it's chambered in the wrong cartridge (.300 WM). Here is some data for the .300 WM FMJ ACE_caliber = 7.823; ACE_bulletLength = 37.821; ACE_bulletMass = 13; ACE_ammoTempMuzzleVelocityShifts[] = {-5.3,-5.1,-4.6,-4.2,-3.4,-2.6,-1.4,-0.3,1.4,3,5.2}; ACE_ballisticCoefficients[] = {0.25}; ACE_velocityBoundaries[] = {}; ACE_standardAtmosphere = "ICAO"; ACE_dragModel = 7; ACE_muzzleVelocities[] = {690,990}; ACE_barrelLengths[] = {305,660.4}; The reason this data is not automatically in the ATragMX is mostly because the mod developer failed to account for it. In order to get data like this, you have to manually de-rapify the config file included with the mod. community.bistudio.com/wiki/Rapify
@owl7717
@owl7717 8 лет назад
+Seriously Wow.. I really appreciate for giving great solution to me :) If I successfully de-rapify the files, maybe I can use AW rifles in the group server where advanced ballistics was adapted. What I dreamed for a month like using various ammos for proper situations, shooting more accurately, and teaching new snipers how to use rifles.. can come true soon. Thanks for answer!

Barrels can actually decrease the bullets velocity meaning it does not travel as far due to more friction with the bullet. It increases accuracy.
