The whole claim of "it's just a trend" is such a slap in the face to us. I spent the first 17 years of my life deeply devoted to the Christian faith, trying my best to be the best Christian I could be, I wanted to be an apologist in high school and even started to prepare for it via some concurrent enrollment taking a philosophy class or two. But when I started to really study what made my faith, my faith. I could not justify my beliefs when reading the bible from a secular point of view, I found it absurd as I do with all religious texts. I spent the next year and a half really examining myself and came to the conclusion that I am an atheist, it wasn't caught up in the moment kind of thing as though I just woke up one morning and thought "I hate god, I am an atheist now!" It took years to come to the conclusion that I do not believe in any sort of deity, and It's not from a place of "hatred" for it, and also absolutely no outside force made me an atheist, if anything, anytime I tried to reach out irl or online in regards to just general help in understand the bible or my faith, typically a Christian would find their way to me to tell me how I am being misled and I am allowing the devil and demons to control my thoughts and that I need to "guard" myself more. And at that point, it sounded like legitimate psychosis when I heard them talk.
This is quite similar to an abusive relationship... "We broke up because they just wanted to avoid responsibility" "I didn't do ANYTHING wrong" "if they cared they would have tried harder" "they're just being selfish"

When I left my church I was shunned by the only friends and social system I'd ever known, kicked out of where I lived, and cut off from my family. Super fun; I definitely only deconstructed because it was trendy.

The only "evidence" required to accuse someone of being a fake Christian (at least according to people like Todd Friel) is a departure from the church. People like Todd can't conceive of the possibility that "true Christians" might decide to leave the church. It is this lens that allows apologists to decide which doubters are "true" and which doubters are "fake"--everything else is made-up to support the narrative. The first argument he claims, that they weren't real Christians, is one of the things that kept me in the faith and doing missions. I was so scared that I was a fake Christian for questioning things.
I feel this, oddly enough it was the bible that helped me get away from the bible. Specifically a passage from Phillipians: "Prove all things, and hold to that which is good" I held to that, and I think it's great advice, now I'm an atheist and far happier and far better equipped to live ethically.
Funnily enough, apologetics is what helped me deconstruct. Every single defense/argument just... logical fallacy after logical fallacy. I can see why many churches discourage apologetics classes.

If they "were never saved in the first place", that's the kind of thing that gave me a lot of damnation anxiety when I was a Christian, because if somebody believed they were saved but turned out not to be, then how do I know for sure that I am? How can I know if any of my friends truly are?

According to Todd, I heard the correct gospel, then. Yes when I deconstructed - my conservative nephew hotly told me I never was a real christian because I had red flags. I was extremely devout when I was. Following the indoctrination script to the letter. I was quite upset due to how devout I was. But I am happily deconstructed and undoing all the damage of indoctrination. It’s a lot easier to do this now because of the content available to skeptic and question the “evidence” of the lack of evidence.

I love that ya'll showed clips from the Earbiscuits podcast. I'm from the same area as Rhett and Link (Buies Creek, NC) and my deconstruction story is similar to theirs. My dad drove a semi-truck when I was a kid. In the summer and winter breaks I would go with him. This guy’s voice sends me right back to sitting in the passenger seat of that truck, staring out the window at some new part of the country, and trying to tune out the voice on the radio that sounded eerily similar to this guy’s. The thing I'll never understand about the whole "you weren't really Christian" or "you really do believe in God" argument is who do they think they're going to convince with that? Let's say for the sake of argument that they're absolutely right and they know better than we do what's in our own heads. How would that line of discussion ever, ever win over a single convert? That's not why they do it. It's not to convert people, it's to try and reinforce the zealotry of those already there. That's what most apologetics are really for. They're not trying to win people over, they're trying to scare people into not leaving.
Like Jackgar said, when they say this it isn't for you. I think it also has to do with the fact that they need a way to explain why you left without having to face the real reasons. If they can believe you only left because you were never a true Christian, they don't have to worry about whether or not your reasoning is valid. Since they totally ARE a real Christian, your journey has nothing to do with them, and they don't have to think about it any deeper than that.

It cracks me up hearing him say, “They never heard the gospel right…”. I’m like, “dude! I used to listen to YOUR podcast: Way of the Master Radio (before they changed it to Wretched and required 💰🤑 subscription fees.)” is he saying he was presenting the gospel wrong? Because it was his and Ray Comfort’s message I was listening to.
After going through the process of deconstruction myself, his video is a perfect illustration of Christians living in an internal loop. Like you guys said his eyes are wide shut. I have seen it in a few other videos in my journey. I have seen Christians choose someone not on their education level so they feel smarter when they couldn’t hold a conversation with someone on their own level. I to completely disregard someone’s path in life because they don’t come to the same conclusions…I studied the early church and I feel like we are reaching a time when “You either die the hero or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain”
This video really highlighted one of the things that pushed me toward "deconstruction". If the whole bible is all about god's gift of salvation, and it is the perfect word of a perfect god, it should be impossible for people honestly seeking to understand it to come away with such radically different interpretations about something as critical as salvation.
Because in Christian theology The human intellect is wounded by original sin to have complete knowledge of something. However the Catholics, and arguably Anglo-Catholics and Greek Orthodoxs don’t have this problem as they rely on the Bishops to interpret doctrine and come to consensus.
But isn’t all great literature divisive in some way? I don’t think differing interpretations of Scripture is a good reason to leave the faith. You are just as obligated to seek truth about Scripture as you are about all other important issues. What should all truth be reducible to reading some book one time and calling it quits? I think it makes perfect sense for theological understanding to come through a lot of intense work in some cases.

While I don’t think tradition of itself is a bad thing it is still not an excuse not to study the material for oneself and gain understanding of alternative points of view. Hermeneutics is not a mere matter of bishop-consensus. Tradition can (big surprise) get things wrong.

Nor is other writing supposed to convey information that will determine where someone spends all of eternity. According to Christianity, an accurate understanding of what God's message is is the most important thing ever, and the only way to read the message is through a translation of writings centuries old, and people consistently get different interpretations from it. Do you seriously think that no catholic ever read the bible themselves and believed their views on it were right? What about differing denominations who don't have bishops?
I was a Christian for 51 years. Read through the Bible at least 10 times. FIFTY ONE YEARS!!!!!!!!!!!! That's an entire life for many people. I could not have been more of a Christian. I'm not going to do the list. It just drives me up the wall. I've been out for only 3 years. I feel like so many wasted years, mentally and so much energy involved.

The argument constantly needing to repent vs. "Once saved always saved" was actually the catalyst that led me to skepticism. When I noticed it firsthand, I had to wonder how the religious authorities could disagree on something that's so foundational to the religion. It shook me pretty hard.

I lost my faith due to education. Studying the Bible, it's content, it's origins and the origins of other religions. This led me to the study of human origins and the origin of life on this planet. I found no evidence that any God did anything at any time for any reason. There's no reason for faith. Religion is unreasonable.

As a sufferer of mental illness, I also recognise another aspect of this mind-reading interpretation that decrees any ex-Christian must never have been a believer in the first place. Dismissal of another person's experience is a great way of invalidating everything and anything they say or do. Beyond simple confirmation bias, this strategy saves them from having to perform that most arduous of tasks: that of performing a reality check. By invalidating you and your experiences, by labelling you "liar", they need never enquire of you why you left the faith. It is a practice that ensures continuity of ignorance against all comers. First time watching your channel. I have been watching Drew for a few years. You guys are adorable together. The sad part about the apologetic video is, if I showed it to my mother (born again christian) she will surely say it's an amazing teaching. Once I got over his demeaning way of speaking I have to say I appreciate that he at least blamed christian teachings and teachers (for some of the backsliders) instead of the tired old "ex-christian", having to take all the blame. I went to a church with a pastor trained at a sister school of Todd’s favorite seminary. When I deconstructed I was a deacon studying to be a pastor. I gave Todd’s ministry money monthly for nearly 4 years! I didn’t realize until then how dangerous he is! And I want my damn money back.
I was raised hearing that if I didn't do what God told me, he was going to crush me and very bad things were going to happen to me, now, I'm an atheist. So, it seems that strategy doesn't work either.

Uh oh, he's not happy with protestants. I would definitely have problems with this dude. I was on my knees praying as a kid, repenting, threw away "sinful" rock music. I was reading the bible with my friends. I was in the zone. To question my young faith, man, that deconstructs me even more from religion.
it’s so hard to listen to anyone shit on rhett’s story because rhett is someone that grew up loving and listening to him and link talk about deconstruction kinda changed my life and i absolutely love him and i am beyond grateful to him for telling him story, obviously people are allowed to speak about what they want but im just like “back off my man rhett!”
In regards to the "kindness of Jesus", that was one of the reasons why I stayed in Christianity. Unconditional love led me to love others different from myself. But I could not align that love and kindness with an entity that created a place of eternal torment for the crime of unbelief. I soon realized it can't be kindness if he's the one that makes the decision. It's still a form of abusive language. "You can never leave because look at how kind I was."
You have it a bit mixed up honestly. Unbelief is a person literally rejecting the love, mercy and closeness to God. You chose to reject God, His gift of eternal life, the invitation to know and be with God. Someone cannot dwell and be with God when they reject Him over and over.
Interesting how all of his points are about how it's the church's fault for confusing, misleading, or inadequately educating people. It almost sounds like this whole salvation model is totally broken and unjust 🤔
Fear. That was what convinced me at 7 years old and that is what kept me in church until just a few years ago when I finally moved out on my own. That and my mother dragging me to church every week. And it's only been recently that I've been seeing the comparison of the "relationship" with God as being an abusive father. Ironically, (or not) my step father was an abusive alcoholic and my mother met him in church of all places. Great video btw. 😁
For me personally, hearing the "well, if you deconstruct you were never a TRUE believer" is kind of funny to hear. Bc, I mean, yeah, for me specifically, that is actually true, but it's really not the own an apologist might think it is. As a teenager, I did in fact convert to Christianity briefly bc I was afraid of going to hell, became a fervent, read-the-Bible-every-night, Church-every-Sunday believer, and then left as abruptly as I joined. But when I look back at my conversion/deconversion, the fact that I got so involved in it and still didn't truly believe in it, that it offered so little benefit to my life that I was able to just drop it like I did, really just demonstrates that the faith did not at all speak to me. I gave it more than a fair shot and I STILL wasn't convinced. If something were really the unfailing, universal truth, you'd think I would still be a believer, right? =/
