Honestly, I immediately adored Carol. As someone who's not hugely expressive, and with a similar sense of humour, it was this instant feeling of connection

What I love is that she never gives up. Knock her down, talk down to her, play mind games with her, she'll rise to the occasion every time. My mom and sister are like that.

I honestly liked her personality from the start. Being forced to control your emotions, and having a sorta dry sense of humor under all that is very relatable to me. Also she was very different to the other lady heroes we've seen. Black Widow and Wasp are kind of... Extremely competent? They don't struggle as much. Widow's only struggle is when Joss suddenly decides we need a Hulk ship with her. Okoye is very very competent too, but we haven't gotten to see a black woman hero at all, so it's not as grating. Carol is built with an arc and a struggle. Most of the other ladies don't have that.
@ancalyme
@ancalyme 5 лет назад
Black Widow also has that whole drama around not being able to have children... it's a character arc I don't even want to think about, nevermind sympathise with. A woman's role is way too often shoehorned into being a mother... and okay that's realistic, but it's like uncomfortable realism? I won't have children either, Black Widow's angst was telling me this directly decreased my worth as a person.
@johnathonhaney8291

@@ancalyme Pretty sucky writing, that, I can agree. What I hope Widow's upcoming film emphasizes is how the damage goes way deeper than that. She was utterly dehumanized so that she could become the ideal tool and weapon. Not having babies is one thing. Not being allowed to be a person at all is infinitely more horrifying.

natasha had the choice taken from her. it's not that giving birth is inherently important to womanhood, but that she might have decided it was important to her, and she never had that choice. it also parallels bruce's impotence and obsession with children, which was telegraphed in the first _avengers_ film. i think joss was telling a very feminist story here, but it was a huge oversight that he only thought about it on a character level and not in terms of how people would project natasha's story onto all women. it would have worked much better in a franchise that already had captain marvel, and had bothered to flesh out scarlet witch and the wasp. there's nothing wrong with natasha's story; what's wrong is that it's the only substantial woman's story in the franchise.
@ancalyme
@ancalyme 5 лет назад
@@sirmoonslosthismind it's usually not a choice. The film didn't say "you can't have children, but you are still a woman and an ass-kicking superhero", it said "you can't have children so you're broken". It was more an issue of presentation than subject-matter...

@@ancalyme Black Widow's arc in AOU is...complicated, to say the least. I defended it for a while, since it was clear to me based on context that the whole "forced sterilization" thing was kind of the last straw of a lifetime of torture and psychological manipulation. But it all comes down to the execution, and the reality is that when you're writing a story, whoever gets the last word defines the arc. Like...I read a play recently where a woman murders her husband because he killed their daughter and then left her. It was incredibly cathartic to see the murder play out and her absolute lack of remorse, but then you find out that she'd been cheating on him with some other dude who ALSO wanted her husband dead for unrelated reasons, so the focus immediately shifts to a "crazy adulteress" plot and completely undermines her agency. Idk if it makes sense, but that's how watching AOU feels. I can talk all I want about her life training to be a spy was what she felt "broke" her (and I really did love the flashback, I thought it was creepy but hauntingly beautiful), but when the last thing she gets sad about is her infertility, then it comes off as kind of messed up.

If I might add this thought, ma'am, it struck me that this origin story could be classified as an internal prison break. The Kree (and I specifically suspect the Supreme Intelligence) basically locked away Carol's memories to make her more useful and compliant. But the memories are leaking through anyway in her dreams (touch of Manchurian Candidate, that) and the Skrull mind probe, combined with her return to Earth, just keeps shredding those walls. After what she remembers, Yon-Rogg is lucky that all she did was knock him down, drag him to his ship and make him her messenger boy to Supremor.
@1monki
@1monki 5 лет назад
"the Supreme Intelligence... locked away Carol's memories". Yeah, and maybe the film could've been a little more clear that in the last act. Her dream shows that her memories weren't just blocked, but altered. And Talos says, "they really did a number on you," but he's a villain at the time so we don't believe him. But it's there between the lines. Also, knowing that is part of what makes the second viewing more interesting. Yon-Rogg's throwaway line asking if there's "anything new" in Carol's dreams takes on a different meaning.

Someone made a comment on another site I visit about how Carol is all stoic and doesn't smile and hardly shows her emotions, and it's because she doesn't know who she is. She's been brainwashed. So, though, had Bucky Barnes. Why weren't people complaining about him being all stoic and hardly ever smiling? I think Captain Marvel might have worked better if it had been a phase one movie. It would have fit right in after CA:TFA. It's clear that, for all the planning the MCU creators did, they either didn't think about a female led superhero film at all, or thought circa 2008 was the wrong time to release said film. I can't tell which option is worse. Overall, though, I like Captain Marvel and I'm pre-ordering my DVD copy as soon as possible.

You can thank Ike Perlmutter for that bullshit. Until the Inhumans fiasco removed his influence from the equation, he was the single biggest blockage against this film or any other female led film. Or do you think it a coincidence that Black Widow is just NOW getting her solo film (Perlmutter didn't even let her have the same merch as her male counterparts)? Feige's been wanting to do this for a long time. He just lacked the leverage until recently.

Bucky did smile before when first introduced in first Captian America film. He was the charismatic, protective Big Brother type you know before getting his arm ripped off and torn away from his time and people he loved. As far as Captain Marvel they did put thought into a female lead. They wanted to bring CM in after endgame but pushed by disney to bring in cm sooner. CM was to come 2 films before endgame but the russo bros or Kevin feige struck a deal to bring her in as late as possible to only 1 film instead of 2 as they wanted to bring her in after endgame. Fandom and I had a discussion about this on her other video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kwqvMGE4guk.html I think your right its all about placment. But CM wouldn't have worked as a phase 1 film as each character accept thor cause he's a god, was just a regular joe blow discovering their powers and growing with their powers not learning who they are already being OP af already.

Haven’t seen it yet, but it’s astounding what people have complained about! I keep hearing that they don’t like her because she’s so smug..... “smug” exactly describes the start of basically all popular MCU characters arcs, Thor= smug, Stark= smug, Black Widow, completely bored when tied up by murderous arms dealers! Cap, smugly self assured of his morals despite learning over and over the world don’t work that way. Everyone in the Guardians sub franchise, I could continue for way to long!

Here's a better adjective: "indomitable". She won't get it right the first time. She'll turn her confidence on blast as her default setting. She might have trouble connecting with people. But she will...not...quit. Her true memories of how she got her powers is a testament to all that. I cite that specific incident as to why she was needed to get the Avengers off their ass in the recently released clip for Endgame. And that's before the staredown with Thor.
@DrewLSsix
@DrewLSsix 5 лет назад
Johnathon Haney that’s an interesting take, I gather that unlike a bunch of the other Marvel films the narrative didn’t treat this as a character flaw that needed to be beaten out of her in order to progress?
@johnathonhaney8291
@johnathonhaney8291 5 лет назад
@@DrewLSsix Ah, no, not in the clip I saw. Everyone else in that room is just so demoralized, Thor especially, so it's a jolt when she proposes just to go and get the Stoned. I mean, yeah, it sets up how she'll find out that it's not THAT easy but it makes it clear that further moping is useless. Steve backs her play right away, Bruce questions why it would work out any better than last time (Carol's answer is pitch perfect), Rhodey wonders where she's been all this time (which sets up a major burn of an answer). Then Thor stands up. Carol just glares at him like "You got something to say to me?" He retrieves Stormbreaker next to her head, she doesn't flinch. Then she narrows her eyes at him and smiles like "yeah, you ready." It was an epic moment.
@johnathonhaney8291

@1monki
@1monki 5 лет назад
@@DrewLSsix The "fatal flaw" origin has been done to death in superhero films so Marvel's trying a different direction with their last two "origin" movies. Both _Black Panther_ and _Captain Marvel_ start their films with powers. Both films contextualize those powers and force the heroes to shift perspectives on what it means for them to be who they are. For Carol she has to take ownership of herself and stop being a good soldier in a bad war. Where a typical origin story is all about the lead character, these films tend to give more focus to the situation they're in and supporting characters. Interestingly, _Infinity War_ almost does this with Thanos, but he doesn't get the perspective shift, so he ends the story as a villain.

@@swanpride exactly! I don't even blame anyone, but I think this movie perfectly encapsulates how men will sometimes miss the message. A lot of genuinely well meaning and competent reviewers I've seen don't like Carol because they're interpreting her arc as "Someone does something bad. Carol gets stronger. pew pew." But her arc is about using her true power when she's been forced into a position of emotional suppression, complacency and mediocrity by those who want to control her. The reality is....that's something that way more women can relate to than men.
@swanpride
@swanpride 5 лет назад
Yeah, they make the mistake of judging the movie based on the classical hero arc, but that is not what they were going for at all. And since they never experienced someone telling them to "not be so emotional" or the other micro-aggressive BS women have to put up with everyday, they are more prone to miss the broader message. Some female reviewers do to, but mostly those who have never worked in a male-dominated workplace. Not that you can't criticise the movie overall. It could have used a better editing, because all those scenes which are meant to establish the relationship Carol has with the various characters (including the Kree team) are there, but since the movie cuts away from those moments so fast, it is kind of a "blink and you'll miss it" situation. Which is too bad. But at least the more often you watch it, the more time your brain has to notice those moments, so the movie gets better and better the more you think about it.

I find myself agreeing with a lot of points you make in this video, especially the Maria/Carol stuff. Maybe it's just me, but I think the movie could have really used more time establishing Carol's emotional arc. What kinds of emotions is she supressing? We see her be very confrontational from the beginning and that makes her arc feel flat to me. I sometimes feel that her struggle isn't specific enough. Like I know way more about Shuri and Okoye and Nakia and Valkyrie than I know about Carol, I feel like. And those characters were not main characters. I also really think they diminished Monica's character by essentially making the most popular and consistent version of Captain Marvel into a child in this way. Monica Rambeau and Kamala Khan deserved to be a larger presence. Also, turning Fury losing an eye into a joke just does not do it for me.

Okay, here's my fear for _Endgame._ I want CM2 to be a cosmic Carol/Rocket/Groot team-up set before GotG, so we can have a good Ronan villain. And Goose and Groot, we could have a scene where a space cat is riding on an alien tree--vines and tentacles, there's got to be a market for that. However, the existence of _Endgame_ makes that very unlikely. Carol and Rocket have to already know each other when they meet up in this film, and I don't think Marvel's thinking that far ahead....
@johnathonhaney8291
@johnathonhaney8291 5 лет назад
Now why would you ever assume that? Or that such an alliance could not take another satisfying form altogether? And, final question: how did Goose get to Earth in the first place and where has Cthulhu Cat been all these years?
@1monki
@1monki 5 лет назад
@@johnathonhaney8291 I assume Goose came to earth with Mar-Vell, but flerkens can teleport. So similar to cats, Goose will wind up wherever Goose wants to be, leaving humans to ask, "How did you get in there?" This also explains how Fury could be in CM2 even if the movie never goes to earth. Ronan is the issue with the time period since he dies in GotG. And the MCU has teased a good Ronan character movie twice, but never quite delivered. CM2 seems the natural place for a good Ronan arc.
@johnathonhaney8291
@johnathonhaney8291 5 лет назад
@@1monki And they may well get there in one form or another on Ronan.
@1monki
@1monki 5 лет назад
_Endgame_ doesn't quite cancel the possibility of this version of CM2. We never see Carol and Rocket meet, and they only share a little banter later. We're given no context for their relationship in the film which is pretty smart on Marvel's end as it leaves room for possibilities.

There is one thing in this review where I heavily disagree with you: For me the best description of Captain Marvel is "Feminism: The Movie". Just remember that "don't be so emotional" and the idea that you have to proof yourself in a game which is from the got go rigged against you is what a LOT of women experience in the workplace. As is getting their personality shut down one way or another. So, replace the Kree empire with a system designed to keep someone down, and you have in Carol Danvers another example of the Avenging feminine...and if you don't know what this is, Inuendo Studio came up with this trope while discussing Fury Road. It is eerie how well Carol's story fits this kind of new type of females in action movies. Also, I for my part am glad that Carol isn't gay. Not that I mind other people doing their shipping, but I prefer it this way. Because for one, I really dislike the idea that "tomboys" are automatically lesbian (or, on the flipside, that lesbian woman are automatically butch). I want Marvel to go there and I hope that they will with the eternals, but I would prefer their first stab at an openly gay characters in the movies to be something less cliche. Just like they managed to do it on the TV side of things. And Two, I am sick and tired of every relationship being interpreted in a romantic way. If Steve and Bucky can have an epic friendship for the ages, why can't Carol and Maria? Plus, it is just so refreshing to see a female character which is not defined over her romantic entanglements at all.

i feel like the only gender politics within _captain marvel_ are those the viewer brings with them. there's a lot to latch onto in that regard if you're looking for it, and many of us are because the very existence of the film seems like a minor victory for feminism, but everything _in_ the film is justified on other grounds. even when _just a girl_ plays, it immediately follows a scene in which our her-o is denigrated as just a _human_ and ends up deciding that being a human is actually a strength. in context, the message is that she's just a (human) girl, throwing off her alien oppressors. but we see what we're looking for and unfortunately the bigots who made up their minds a long time ago also see exactly what they're looking for.
@swanpride
@swanpride 5 лет назад
I didn't look for it. In fact I needed some time to figure out why this movie spoke to me so much and why specifically the "I don't have to proof you anything" had me THAT pumped. I just knew, if that makes any sense. The movie spoke to me on an emotional level and I had to sit down and sort out why it felt so, well, right. And there are a little bit TOO many parallel to say "this is just an accident". Ironically, though, the bigots mostly DID'T even pick up on it. I am serious. They get the scenes with the "cockpit" and the "smile" and the outward sexism, but the underlying theme, that went right over their head. Because you would have to actually acknowledge that sexism is still a problem to see it.

I feel about Carol and Maria the same way I do about Steve and Bucky. And this explained it so perfectly. It's like if you made Bucky a woman it would 100% read as a romantic relationship. I mean he's got the damsel in distress thing down packed. How many times has Steve dropped everything to go off and save him? In a lot of ways Bucky plays the stereotypically female role, especially in CATFA. As for whether or not its a feminist film I think it's a little more feminist then you imply. It's not overtly feminist but it's got a main character who is being gas lit and who has to learn not to be afraid of her own power and not to limit herself. That seems pretty feminist to me.

Is this a joke? Please don’t skin this as negative and click away cause I honestly want to hear your response to my feeling on the character in the books and how it ruined the film. What is a more positive message for women, taking a man’s persona or making her own better then the man’s? Larson & the movie were AWFUL, I say that as a Ms Marvel fan. Not the bs inhuman version but Carol’s Ms Marvel. The Ms Marvel who earned a spot on the Avengers. The Ms Marvel who told Norman when he took over the Avengers in Dark Reign to go screw himself when he tried getting her on the team, the Ms Marvel who made the Ms Marvel name mean more then Captain Marvel’s ever did. She was on track to be Marvel’s Wonder Woman. A true pillar hero of this universe but then they downgraded her to using Captain Marvel for her name and it’s been down hill ever since. Bad solo title comic runs and as one of the things that made Civil War 2 so bad. Ms Marvel was destroyed for yet another hypocritical false feminist image that’s deeply inferior to an original persona. Ms Marvel being launched as a main event hero like Iron Man or Cap would’ve meant so much more they stealing the Captain Marvel name which let’s be real, Marvel’s original Captain Marvel was a lame Alien dude with a goofy costume and couldn’t killed quick enough. He’s nothing more then a launching pad for Ms Marvel. Carol had all ready been kneecapped then came the HORRIBLE acting of Larson. This was a cluster that betrayed the character
