Here in the US, engine with 567s are rare, they're either in museums or working for a short line. Never thought i'd hear 567 hard at work in notch 8 in HD sound. Favorited right away! Great vid!!!!!

Anyone else shiver listening to that? First time for me was 1964 on the N&W with 8 GP9's, 4 pulling, 4 pushing 100+cars, around 12,000 tons of coal. Sounded just like this. These vids are just simply priceless captures. Thanks so very much for bringing back memories.

I've always preferred the Turbo powered 645's as far as sound goes (that low frequency rumble) but by far the prettiest thing to ever hit the rails were the F units. It makes me happy that there are still some putting in work "down under". Much love for our Australian brothers.

Air conditioned cabs? Nope! Computer controlled adhesion control? Nope! Still pegging the amp meter after 50 years? Yep!

Were those things always that loud or is it just because they're old? Where I walk in the hills, you can always tell if a 2200 is coming. They sound like a chaff cutter.

it's just the way they were built,the technology in the day wasn't around to make them quieter like now.

I doubt for this "suspension", I guess they pray for everything goes well. Small failure - temporary slip, even rat on rail - and end of ride.
@dennisyoung4631

If they have women train drivers, the ladies should be “on” - they get an extra three notches, such that the throttle goes up to eleven. (At least, that’s what happens in fiction.)

With the paintwork on those engines it really is easy to think of the Santa Fe. Nice to see that somewhere in the world these fantastic old timers still live.

First-class video. See any hazy blue smoke from those 567's or around the trucks? That is some well-maintained power doing what it was designed to do and it's certainly not being abused.

Man, thank you, thank you! This was great! It takes me back to when i was a kid in Vancouver BC. Late at night in bed every so often i could hear this sound as units of CN to the north of me, and GN to the east of me would pull hard leaving town. Great job filming this for us all! Thanks, Kev from Canada.

I ran ex- GTW GP-9's on a Michigan shortline for many years. There was a 2 mile stretch of maybe 1 percent grade. Two Geeps, 567C, 3500 h.p., Roots blowers just a whining, pulling 30 loaded grain cars, uphill, at 10mph. Oh, on jointed rail, rocking a bit. The thumping, stacato roar from the stacks, with beautiful grey exhaust shooting fifty feet upward, was absolutely awesome & intoxicating to my senses ! Pure pulling power at notch 8 ! As sweet as a P-51 Merlin engine sound !!

@WBDE I think it was based on the SD7. We never used the 24RL brake here. We mostly had the A7EL and then went to the 26L. Of course the newer locos now have the modern computer based equipment but none that I get on do.

I live about 5 mins away from there. I can usually hear them as they start off from the station. I sometimes drive up there and catch them as they go under the bridge at the top of the grade. The sound is fantastic and extremely loud as they slowly go under. Yes, the track diverges soon after the bridge, right to Geelong and left Melbourne.

@WBDE Now there's a coincidence because I am also working on the ML2 in this clip tomorrow evening. Happily with just four passenger cars. The roadbed in the foreground is for 100mph passenger trains. The freight is on a poorly maintained 50mph freight line. The railway here always flogged everything and we frequently ran over the ruling grades at about 10-14 mph. This hill is just a few miles long and then it gets a down hill run for about 50.

Japanese passenger trains. Apologies for any misunderstanding. However, we do have some luxury passenger trains down here that would compare very well to the streamliners of yesteryear USA. Look up The Ghan, Indian Pacific, Southern Spirit or The Queenslander. With almost the same land mass and a small fraction of your population to support a rail system we do OK.

The two bigger units were geared for 'about ' 80 mph ( allowed 70 ) with the smaller unit in the mid 60's ( allowed 60 ) IIRC. They ran them in MU for years before some genius figured that the combined loads had to be reduced due to the larger units running below their continuously rated speed and above the continuous AMPS.
